Amendments to law required, say experts
Sandeep Rana
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 21
To tackle the rising number of cyber and IT crimes in the country, amendments to the law are needed to be done, feel cyber law experts
who gathered here today to attend a cyber crime seminar.

“This is not clear for how long a company has to keep safe its data. Most of the time, organisations delete information of its employees from the Internet after a few years. But if investigations are required into such cases, then to carry out a probe is
not possible,” said Karnika Seth, advocate (Cyber Law).

The Information Technology Act was implemented in 2000 and after that, a few amendments were made to it. However, more of them needed to be done to cope up with the fast changing technology.

“The law doesn’t clarify which electronic signature are valid and which not,” she added.

Justice VS Sirpurkar, Judge of the Supreme Court, said: “We should think over how to stop cyber crime cases.”

Testing of samples for early detection of HIV/AIDS
starts
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, May 21
The Anti-Retroviral Treatment (ART) Centre at the Doon District Hospital has started taking samples for DNA Polymerase Chain Reaction PCR testing from today. This will be helpful in the early detection of HIV/Aids in children.

The sample will be sent to the National Institute of Communicable Disease (NICD), New Delhi, for testing through a courier service and the report will be received within four weeks. This facility was not available at Doon Hospital as it did not possess the PCR testing equipment.

Earlier, the children had to wait for 14 months for carrying out HIV confirmatory tests at the hospital; now samples for testing at NICD can be undertaken for children who are four weeks old.

“As newborn babies have a false positivity due to maternal antibodies, waiting period is advised before the tests can be undertaken,” said Dr KS Negi, child specialist, ART (Doon Hospital).

The HIV PCR test is a new technology used for HIV early-detection testing and is accessible in big hospitals. The new HIV PCR test looks for the DNA copy of the HIV virus itself in your blood. It is extremely accurate, sensitive and the cutting edge of HIV early-detection testing.

This is a new technology for the early detection of HIV after 28 days of exposure.

The mandatory HIV tests in babies are undertaken to prevent the transmission of HIV/ AIDS from parent to child in case if one parent or both are suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Since the setting up of the ART centre in 2006, 10 children have died of AIDS and around 82 children are taking ART treatment at the Doon Hospital.

“Bollywood is a good place to be in, but freshers should watch out against con men promising them the moon,” stated Jaidev Chakravorty, Director, feature films/ ad films and tele-serials, in an exclusive interview with The Tribune here today.

An alumnus of city-based DBS College, he is in the city on a personal visit. He had shifted to Mumbai 22 years ago to make his mark in the film industry and also managed to fulfil his dream of becoming a director.

His father Ajay Kumar Chakravorty, who also directed many plays and was a well-known figure in the field of acting in the city, always wanted Jaidev to become a doctor, though Jaidev always dreamt to be a part of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTTI).

“My father has directed many plays with local artistes, including actor Himani Shivpuri. He always wanted me to become a doctor and asked me to work in the field of direction as a hobby and not a profession. But I wanted to move to Mumbai. On this, my father gave me just six-month time to make a niche for myself,” said Jaidev.

While struggling for a break, he met director Esmayeel Shroff and his career kicked off. “I was lucky that I met good people in the industry. My career took a shape after meeting Shroff and since then, have I never looked back. I worked with many actors like Salmaan Khan, Sri Devi, Akshay Kumar, Madhuri Dixit, Jackie Shroff and Shakti Kapoor,” he said.

“I worked as an assistant director with Esmayeel for the movie ‘Police Public’ (debut film as AD), ‘Nischaiy’, ‘Zid’ and ‘Yeh Majhdhar’, he said. “After this, I got chance to work on ‘Saajan’ with Lawrence D’ Suza,” he added.

Life-long passion for theatre
Tribune News Service

Face of the week
Laxmi Narain Singh
Laxmi Narain Singh

Dehradun, May 21
Seventy-year-old Laxmi Narain Singh, founder of Doon Ghati Rang Manch, entered the world of theatre at the young age of 10 years, when he would participate in Bal Nataks that formed part of the Ram Lila extravaganza and lasted several days. Soon at the age of 16 years, he made his directorial debut and directed his first play, “Roti Bechi” that won him accolades.

While dabbling in theatre, he also applied for the job of an auditor in a government department for which he was luckily selected. The job ensured a steady income while he kept nurturing his passion for theatre. Today his son and grandchildren also accompany him on stage.

His organisation, dedicated to theatre and performing arts, hosts cultural programmes regularly.

When asked whether the theatre movement has a future especially in the age of reality television and internet, each clamouring for viewers’ attention, he said the movement was still alive and viewers do troop in and were known to give a standing ovation to good performances. One had to experiment constantly as a director and be right on target as far as the taste of the audience was concerned. “In Dehradun, too, we managed to get full houses for good performances.”

On his journey so far and about his contemporaries, some of whom even carved a niche for themselves as part of the Hindi Cinema, he said since 1957, he had been staging plays regularly. Some of the plays that he staged included Shakespeare’s “Othello”, “Julius Caesar” and Rakesh Mohan’s “Ashar Ka Ek Din”. I have acted and directed in around 300 plays while being a part of the Doon Ghati Rang Manch, he said.

He added that after he retired from the job of an auditor in 2001, he had been actively engaged in nurturing young talent. He had the good fortune of acting with Himani Bhatt, with whom he performed several plays. She later debuted on the silver screen and gave fine performances.

“I want to emphasise that actors with a theatre background have it easy if they embark on a film or television career. The sound training that they receive while doing theatre pays off.”

Talking about the kind of support he craved from the government and whether the government has done enough to promote arts in the state, he says if one goes back in history, art has really taken off whenever it was patronised by the kings and the genteel classes. He adds, “I do not want to make a class distinction here, but that is a fact. In a democratic country, there are several choices and the supportive role of the government is always welcome, but ultimately it is society that has to keep the latent interest alive.”

Beginning tomorrow, once again Doon Ghati Rang Manch will be staging a cultural show that is expected to draw talent from across the country. Says Laxmi Narain Singh, “Every year we organise Bharat Rang Mahotsav and this year eight states have already confirmed their participation. We have shifted the venue to Kalu Mal Dharamshala as the Town Hall is undergoing repair work.”

DM tells officials to complete pending tasks
Our Correspondent

Mussoorie, May 21
While chairing the review meeting regarding the preparation for the forthcoming tourist season in Mussoorie at the Municipal Council board room today, the Dehradun District Magistrate, Sachin Kurve, directed the officials to complete the pending tasks till June 4 before the advent of the tourist season.

Kurve took stock of the law and order situation. He enquired about the pace of development works in the town from Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA), the Public Works Department (PWD) and the Tourism Department officials and gave them necessary directions. The members of the Mussoorie Hotel Association and other organisations raised the issue of sub-standard work done by the Pay Jal Nigam in laying the sewerage pipeline and constructing faulty chambers on various roads around the town. The work is being done under the JNNURM scheme of the Government of India.

The Mussoorie Hotel Association president apprised the DM about the dangerous sewerage chambers that had been constructed much higher than the road level, inviting the risk of accidents. The DM also directed the officials of the Pay Jal Nigam to lay down the sewerage pipeline without causing any inconvenience to the tourists or the local residents. Kurve directed the officials to rectify the fault within two days. MLA Jot Singh Gunsola raised the question of the roundabout construction at Kingcraig. He said Rs 58 lakh had been spent on the widening of the road and if the roundabout was not constructed, the whole exercise would go waste. DM, Dehradun, directed the PWD Department to make an estimate for it from the district plan and begin the construction soon.

The Municipal Council president OP Uniyal also raised the question of removing poles from the widened roads as they were hampering the flow of traffic and were causing inconvenience. Kurve directed the Electricity Department to remove the poles after seeking the funds from the district plan and begin the work soon.

The spokesperson of the Mussoorie Hotel Association, Sandeep Sahni, raised the issue of non-functioning ornamental lights that were inaugurated by the Tourism Minister recently due to the “callous” attitude of the departments concerned. The Tourism Department cited lack of an electricity connection as the main reason for the non-functioning of the lights. It was decided that the Municipal Council would provide the connection with the help of the Electricity Department and put the lights in working condition within two days. Sahni also raised the issue of lack of coordination between various departments as the major reason for the delay in the execution of development works. The DM also directed the PWD Department to remove the construction debris from the roads and penalise contractors indulging in the practice.

He also announced a ban on the construction work till the peak season was on in the town. The DM said a follow-up meeting would be held on June 4 regarding the work discussed in the meeting today.
