Cultural events mark Mother’s Day celebrations

Ambala, May 7
Mother’s Day was celebrated in various schools of Ambala today. Besides cultural functions, a drawing competition and a baby show were also organised on the occasion.

Police DAV Public School organised a drawing competition, in which students made different poses of mothers expressing their affection. School principal Vikas Kohli said there was no substitute for mother.

It is the mother who scarified everything for the happiness of her children, he added.

PKR Jain Public School also organised a cultural function to mark the Mother’s Day.

The mothers of several students participated in the function. Principal Jiyotsna Sachdeva while explaining the importance of the mother said Mother’s Day celebrations persuaded us to recall the obligations of the parents, especially of the mother.

62-year-old apprehends threat to life

Kalka, May 7
Apprehending threat to his life, 62-year-old Sumer Singh Saini, a resident of Adarsh Colony, Kalka, has sent a complaint letter to Haryana Chief Minister, Governor, DG, Haryana Police, and Panchkula SP against seven persons, including officials of the Kalka municipal committee.

On a petition filed on April 20, 2011, by Saini, a resident of Adarsh Colony, Upper Mohalla, Kalka, the lower court, Panchkula, had issued summons to eight persons of Kalka, including MC secretary, JE, municipal councillors, ME and a contractor for misappropriating government funds. The court had issued summons to Pavitra Gulia, secretary, MC, Kalka, Mohini Nanda, former president, MC, Gopal Kelawat, ME, Pawan Kumar, JE, Sarwan, contractor, Harbhajan Singh, municipal councillor, ward no. 2 and Gurnam Dass, municipal councillor, ward no. 1. Sumer Singh alleged that on the receipt of summons from the court, the accused asked him to take back his complaint and threatened him with dire consequences. When contacted, MC officials denied having done any such thing.

Body found

A body of a 25-year-old youth was found on the Kalka-Ambala railway track near Chandimandir. The railway police said the youth might have been run over by a train on Friday night. The body was taken to the civil hospital, Kalka, for an autopsy. The police has initiated proceeding under Section 176 of the CrPC.

Body recovered

Dera Bassi: An unidentified body was found near the national highway here today. The body was found in bad condition and sources said that it might be lying for the past two or three days.

The body has been kept at Dera Bassi Civil Hospital for 72 hours for identification. The police said the victim was nearly 50 years old. There was no sign of injury on his body.

The police suspects that excess use of liquor and mental tension could be the reason of death.

2 injured in mishaps

Two policemen were injured in different road accidents near here today. Gurdas Singh was on his way home on a motorcycle when a car coming from the rear side hit him near Jawaharpur village. In another accident, Parveen Kumar, who was on a scooter, was hit by a car near Bhushan Factory on the national highway. He was taken to the civil hospital, Dera Bassi.

Judge listens to lawyers’ grievances

Fatehgarh Sahib, May 7
Justice Rakesh Jain from the Punjab and Haryana High Court today paid a visit to Fatehgarh Sahib district courts. He listened to the grievances of lawyers.

Senior lawyer and District Bar Association president Amardeep Dharni said Justice Jain, who is also administrative judge for Fatehgarh Sahib, was told about the lack of basic amenities, proper routes connecting lawyers’ chambers with administrative complex and unhygienic food being served in canteen.

Dharni also pointed out faults in the functioning of a senior official of Fatehgarh Sahib. He demanded an enquiry into the allegations made by a section of lawyers against the official. Justice Jain directed the Deputy Commissioner to immediately send a detailed report of all cases decided by the officer in question.

Justice Jain also inspected the construction work of lawyers’ chambers in courts complex. The advocates urged him to construct a corridor to connect judicial complex building with lawyers’ chambers and district administrative complex. — TNS

Sports trials on May 12

Patiala, May 7
The Punjabi University sports department will conduct selection trials for the sports wing for the session 2011-2012 on May 12. Giving information, director sports, Dr Rajkumar Sharma informed that sportspersons belonging to any sports discipline, coming under the Association of Indian University calendar, is eligible for trials for the sports wing.

Players who are seeking admission or studying in any graduate course, postgraduate course, MPhil or pursuing Doctorate can participate in the trials, but they must be less than 28 years.

He further informed that the selected players would be provided with Rs 3,000 diet money per month. Moreover, for the very first time, Punjabi University is going to introduce full air-conditioned residential facilities to its players.

Players (boys/girls) must report at 8.30 am at the Raja Bhalendra Singh Sports Complex, Punjabi University. The players must bring two passport size photographs, along with their original sports and academic certificates. — TNS

Accused produced in court

Panchkula, May 7
The eight accused, who were arrested on the charges of assaulting Dalits at Bataud village, near here, were produced in a local court which sent them to judicial custody. Lajja Ram, Vijay Kumar, Ranvir Singh, Sohan Singh, Rajvir Singh, Satish, Amandeep and Updesh were arrested by the local police under Sections 149, 323, and 506 of IPC and SC/ST Act.

The accused have also filed bail plea which will be heard on May 9.

All eight accused belonging to upper caste were arrested on the charges of attacking Dalits.

The village had been under tension since March 17 when Dalits objected to cultivation of a piece of land by people belonging to the upper caste. However, the opposite party claimed that they had been cultivating it for the past more than four decades and they were the owners as per norms.

Thereafter, the police registered cases against the accused. Both parties staged dharnas. While Dalits were protesting against the delay in the arrest of the accused, the village residents from upper caste had been demanding the withdrawal of cases. On April 29, the district administration formed a 14-member committee to sort out their differences. While a permanent police post has been set up in the village, more than 150 police personnel have been deputed in the village to thwart any untoward incident.

St Anne’s-32 in semis

St Anne’s Convent School, Sector 32, secured berth in the semifinals of the St Kabir Trophy after beating Strawberry World School, Sector 26, by 50 runs at St Kabir’s ground here today.

St Anne’s team put on 129 runs in the allotted 20 overs. The main contributors were Jaideep (37), Anmol (29) and Puneet (28). Aassees, Manan and Harshdeep took one wicket each.

In reply, Strawberry team were bundled out for 79 runs. None of their batsmen could reach the double figures.

Utkarsh of St Anne’s played vital role with his deadly bowling spell. He took two for four, while Saksham, Paras, Ikhtaj, Jaideep and Anmol shared one wicket each.

In other match, Saupin's who had already qualified for the semifinals beat St. Soldier’s, Mohali by 77 runs.

Score:

St Anne's: 129 for three in 20 overs (Jaideep 37, Anmol 29, Puneet 28 no and Manan 1 for 17).

Strawberry: 79 for eight in 20 overs (Aassees 30 and Utkarsh 2 for 4).

Saupin’s: 166 for 1 in 20 overs (Aayush 76 no, Prabhjeet 53 no and Imraan 1 for 28).

St Soldier: 89 for 5 in 20 overs (Harman 19 n o, Atul 16 and Arpit 2 for 17).

Tomorrow St Kabir will play against The Millenium for the top and second position.

Gold Cup cricket from today

Chandigarh Cricket Academy (CCA), affiliated to Punjab Cricket Association, will organise third BTS Gold Cup Cricket Tournament (U-12) from May 8 at BTS Cricket Academy, Sector 48.

The tournament will be played under league-cum-knockout format and as many as eight teams, being divided in two pools, will participate.

The names of teams as per their pool are:

Mohali amass 291 runs

With the help of 65 runs by Harsarup Singh, Mohali district team posted 291 runs in their first innings against Ropar on the first day of two-day match of U-16 ML Markan Trophy being played at Yadavindra Public School.

In reply, Ropar were at 36 for 1 in 11 overs at the close of first day’s play.

After winning the toss, Mohali team decided to bat first. After getting an early jolt of losing their opener Shubham Gill without any run on the board, the team was rescued by Harsrup Singh (65), Abhijit Garg (46) and Jasbir Singh (46).

Harpreet Brar of Ropar completed his five-wicket haul for 58 runs. Bhupinder Singh claimed 3 for 59.

In the second match played between Patiala and Chandigarh, the former opted to bat first. But the decision backfired as they lost three wickets with 30 runs on the board. Sagar Kumar (81 off 138) and Manveer (44 off 81) salvaged the team by stitching a 95-run partnership. After Manveer Singh was bowled out by Bhagminder, Tanish Gill joined Sagar Kumar and the two stitched a 50-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Sagar Kumar was castled by Sagar Sharma. Anmol Malhotra chipped in a half century (56 off 76). Patiala were at 262 for 8 in 95 overs at the end of the day’s play.

Bhagminder snapped 5 for 58 for Chandigarh.

In the match played between between Bathinda and Ludhiana in Ludhiana, the latter put on 233 in 61.2 overs in their first innings.

In reply, Bathinda were 88 for 3 in 41 overs.
