Traffic lights synchronised on Mahavir Marg
Jalandhar, May 3 As per the arrangement, anyone getting a green light at Football Chowk will not have to stop anywhere at Chick Chick Chowk, Kapurthala Chowk or even Workshop Chowk as he would get the “Go” signal on reaching at all the next intersections. The system applies even while coming backward. It would save a lot of time of the commuters crossing through the city on way to Kapurthala or Amritsar. While such a system is common in metro cities, it is for the first time that it has been done in Jalandhar. While earlier the MC had been proposing a flyover across the road, it has been done away with for the time being. The SE (O&M), MC, BS Dhaliwal, said the programming of the lights had been done in such a way that by the time a commuter covered the distance up to the next liht point at a speed of 35 km per hour or so, the next light also goes green. He said all the wires of the four traffic lights had been connected and aligned for the purpose. The ACP, Traffic, Diljinder Singh Dhillon, claimed that since all such lights came in a row, the motorists had been facing much inconvenience stopping at each one of them. He said the testing of the stretch was going on successfully. He added that such a project might not be replicated elsewhere in the city as this was the only stretch where lights had been installed in a row. A resident of Adarsh Nagar, Varinder Sharma, claimed that it was he who had initially made the proposal before the MC. “I am happy that they have done away with the flyover proposal saving the public money and making them feel convenient at the same time. Earlier, I had proposed them to get inverters at the signals which again came as a much respite as there used to be lot of chaos whenever the lights went off. The only vital things that still remain missing are the stop lines and zebra crossings.” |
Still some hope for KV No 4
Jalandhar, May 3 The school, which is situated on defence land, has stopped any fresh admissions from April 1. A decision in this regard was taken by Assistant Commissioner, Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangthan, Jammu Region. Sources maintained that the school could be saved from being closed as senior Army officers have raised the matter with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and a decision was awaited. The matter is under consideration and hopefully, some positive development might take place, the sources added. Talking to The Tribune, Principal of the school A.K. Loomra said the development had rekindled their hopes. “Last week I met some senior Army officers concerned at Headquarters 11 Corps in this regard. Finally, they have forwarded the matter to the MoD and a final decision was awaited. We are hopeful that finally the school will be saved from being closed permanently,” he added. The principal added that they had a time period of around one and a half month during which MoD would give its final decision. “The school will remain closed for summer vacations from May 7 to June 26. During this ample time period, surely the matter will be resolved,” he said, adding that with this they would be able to save the future of around 1,300 plus students. Efforts to contact senior Army officers in this regard at Sub Area Headquarters turned futile. However, when Defence PRO Naresh Vig was contacted, he refused to comment on the matter. |

Srijan brings the hues of nature
Jalandhar, May 3 While Ashwini Verma talked about nature, Sudhamani’s paintings dealt in landscapes and greenery and Harish Verma’s paintings (with conch-headed women and calligraphic representation of religious catch words) were mostly about spirituality. Neeru Grover’s favourite topics were still women and motherhood, while Surjit Singh came up with landscapes and H.S. Bhatti presents his twisted, snake-like versions of trees and a bright-hued environment. Archana Verma, too, stuck to her miniature paintings inspired by the Pahari art. Sushma’s B&W women stood out and so did Bharat Bhushan’s crazed, distorted brown figures running along a white background. While one could bet they appeared to be dancing, Bhushan insisted they were running across a barren facade in search of water (his take on a deteriorating environment). While the exhibition itself was lovely, the artists were bothered by the dearth of visitors. Anup Watts, general secretary of the organisation, said compared to the response they got at Kala Bhawan in Chandigarh recently, the response to the Jalandhar exhibition was lukewarm. |

Even the work on cemented pathways is going on in full swing,” he said, adding that many old offices situated towards the inside portion of the park had also been vacated. Bublani said another feature of the renovation project was that instead of planting all new decorative plants they had retained the old trees, which would add to the greenery and beauty of the park. “The landscaping has been done in such a manner that the park once completed will be an amalgamation of the old shady trees and new plants. We are also planning to hire some company for the annual maintenance of the park,” he highlighted. Popularly known as “Company Bagh”, this centuries-old park is situated just adjoining the MC office. SBJ presents Spring Summer 2011 collection in city
Jalandhar, May 3 The unveiling of the Spring Summer 2011 men’s collection by Study By Janak (SBJ) here at the Radisson Windsor Hotel on May 1 was a different matter altogether. There have been times when ignorant fashionistas in the city have been subjected to amateurish designers dumping age-old collections on them. But SBJ acknowledged Jalandhar’s growing fashion potential by keeping it fresh and professional. First previewed in March, the collection showcased formal wear, wedding wear and cool summer casuals. Silm-fit lapel suits and Nehru jackets in soft summery shades and fabrics paired with colourful scarves and handkerchiefs were the first to make an entry onto the ramp. The next was a refreshing collection of traditional-print, folded sleeve-kurtis teamed with waistcoats and Jodhpuris. The final was the wedding wear collection - soft brocade, sequinned or embroidered jackets and elaborate stoles. The best men of the fashion world strutted on a rather short ramp as belly dancers (who didn’t know how to dance) accompanied them from time to time. The show was loved by the handful of fashion enthusiasts of the city who witnessed it. Work of designers Manoj Mehra and Vandy Mehra of SBJ and the kurti and waistcoat collection was especially loved. The occasion also saw SBJ designers and directors Manoj, Vandy and Ayush Mehra, as well as SBJ brand ambassador Jas Arora judging models for their style and personality. |

MC, plastic makers lock horns over carry bags’ manufacture
Jalandhar, May 3 The manufacturers alleged that the corporation authorities were enforcing them to manufacture even the industrial packing in accordance with the provisions of the Act, which are otherwise meant to be followed only in case of production of polythene carry bags. It is pertinent to mention here that the state government has directed all the local bodies to strictly enforce the Act across the state from May 1. The Act dictates that the polythene carry bags should be manufactured with the polythene thickness not less than 30 micrometers and not less than size of 8X12 inches. Accentuating that the provisions of the Act were applicable only on the polythene carry bags, the members of the Jalandhar Plastic Manufacturers Association today requested the corporation authorities to suspend the raids on plastic manufacturing units. “It is not possible to manufacture all polythene bags of 8X12 inches size. The size of each industrial product differs and we have to manufacture packing polythene as per requirement of the product,” said Rajesh Aggarwal, Cashier of the Jalandhar Plastic Manufacturer Association. The Jalandhar plastic industry also manufactures polythene used for packing of products manufactured by the Jalandhar-based hand tools, gun metal, sports and surgical units. Moreover, the Act is completely silent regarding the manufacturing of polythene used for industrial packing, claimed Aggarwal. On the other hand, Assitant Commissioner, MCJ, DP Bhardwaj said the corporation was acting according to prescribed provisions of the Act. “It is nowhere written in the Act that it will not be applicable on the industrial packing,” added Bhardwaj. He added that 12 industrial units and wholesalers of polythene bags were raided by the four teams constituted for the purpose. Raids would continue, he added. |
