The driver of the couple, Sarvender Singh Dalal (27), hails from a village in Bulandshahr in Uttar Pradesh. The three have been arrested for the murder of Sanjeev Kumar Dass (28), a business partner of the couple; Mohammed Abrar Hussain (42), the couple's manager, and Ashok (45), Kiran's brother. According to H.G.S. Dhaliwal, while Tomar is the owner of Kiran Travels which has a fleet of 250 vehicles, Kiran owns Perfect Marriage Jodi. Talking about the murder of Hussain, Dhaliwal revealed that Tomar killed him for diverting company funds to his account. "Tomar's transport company had a fleet of 250 cars two years ago. He provided services to the offices of SAIL. But Hussain, who worked as the manager of the company, cheated Tomar and diverted Rs 1 crore to his personal account. Besides, Tomar got to know that he had developed intimacy with his wife," said Dhaliwal. He added that Tomar along with his driver Dalal picked up Hussain from Saidulajab and strangulated him in one of the rooms of his house and dumped the body on railway tracks in Gulawati (Bulandshahr). The second victim, Kiran's brother Ashok, was killed by the couple because he had demanded his share in his ancestral house where the couple was living. "Tomar along with Dalal took Ashok to Gulawati and after killing him, threw his body in Kali River in the Bulandshahr area around five months ago," said Dhaliwal. He said that Ashok's elder brother had reported the matter to the Mehrauli police station. In the third case, wherein Kiran's business partner Sanjiv was found murdered in Bulandshahr a week ago, Tomar, despite suffering from heart attacks, conspired with Kiran and Dalal to eliminate him as he was claiming the ownership of Perfect Marriage Jodi. Sanjiv was strangulated by Dalal and his body dumped in bushes in the Bibi Nagar police station area. |

DU girls seek self-defence tips
New Delhi, March 14 After the recent Radhika Tanawar case, DUSU has written to all colleges to allow the self-defense classes for girl students, with the special focus on the girl students of South Campus who attend evening classes. Also, the DUSU has forwarded a proposal of a "gender sensitisation society" in every college wherein the students can voice their concerns on a common platform, on a regular basis. Currently, most colleges have a women cell but most of the times it remains dormant due to lack of proper attention. "Back in February as well, the DUSU and the Delhi police had held self-defense camps for DU girl students which did not receive a major response. Out of 80 colleges, 14 colleges agreed for the sessions to be held in their campus. Now, let's see how many colleges respond to the idea of a gender sensitisation cell," said DUSU vice-president Priya Dabbas. Meanwhile, the university authority has already started intimating colleges to install surveillance systems on the campus and hostel areas. Both the campuses already have a bike patrolling system under which a man and a woman security guard of the university patrol the area from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm. "I will be meeting police officials from the north and south district tomorrow to discuss the matter further. The Delhi police had already sent us an advisory for installing surveillance systems three weeks ago. We have already sent letters to colleges as well as hostels in the North Campus to install surveillance cameras. Letters are also being dispatched to the colleges in the South Campus," said DU proctor HP Singh. The meeting will also focus on proper transport facility, especially in Moti Lal Nehru, Jesus and Mary and Maitreyi College, as students have to walk quite a distance to get to the main road to catch a bus or an auto. Walking down Benito Juarez Marg is quite a hassle as the stretch often gets deserted. RLA and Moti Lal Nehru Colleges also run in the evening due to which it becomes difficult for the girl students to commute, especially during winters. “We have one bus plying around South Campus but we have written to the DTC to get two more. These buses will cover a large area and would run from 8 am to 8 pm. We are taking some serious measures to ensure that students feel safe," said Sanjeev Singh, deputy proctor, South Campus.
Novel protest: DU teachers
take classes in the open
Following the Delhi High Court judgment in the Delhi University semesterization case, that the Delhi University Teachers Association (DUTA) cannot resort to strikes anymore, teachers have now found a new way to make their point.
Instead of going on a strike, DU teachers today organised "open learning" sessions in the lawns outside the vice-chancellor's office at North Campus and in Kamla Nehru College lawns in South Campus. "Since we cannot resort to strikes now, we thought we will conduct classes in the lawns here today. This is our way of expressing our disagreement with the semesterization in all the undergraduate courses in the university. What we cannot understand is the hurry in the matter. Till now, even the changes in science courses after semesterization have not been analysed. And now the imposition on arts and commerce courses without listening to their point of view is unacceptable. We will continue our efforts," said Abha Dev Habib, physics teacher of Miranda House, who took two extra classes in the lawns of the VC's office today. Teachers from St. Stephen's College, Ramjas College, Khalsa College and even Indraprastha College held their classes in the lawns today. "We all managed to arrange white boards to facilitate the teaching sessions. We successfully conducted lectures in maths, physics, history and English. Teachers from nearby colleges like Stephen's had more sessions as it was easier for students to come to the lawns," said a maths teacher from Ramjas College. The students supported the teachers. Students from Indraprastha College (IP) accompanied their English Department lecturers to the lawns which are at least 2 km from their college campus. "We want the teachers to stand by us when we need them, we are doing the same for them," responded Ketki Kothiwal, an IP student. "Our students duly agreed for the open learning lessons in the lawns. They understood that we need to do what we are doing. There is immense pressure on all the departments to submit their dual course details to the university for semsterization in the coming academic year. There is no one listening to the problems involved. Each department has its own grievance. We are not against semesters, but we need answers and no one is ready to give them to us. All we receive are letters of threat from the university administration," said Kintu Jha, one of the teachers at Kamla Nehru College today who participated in the open learning session. The sessions today were conducted till 5 pm in the evening. When contacted, there was no response from the VC's office. Even the teachers received no word from the VC all day long. |
Hike in charges of farmhouses proposed
New Delhi, March 11 As per the new proposed policy of the MCD, those farmhouses have been classified into three categories - farmhouses having area up to 2.5 acre, above 2.5 but less than 5 acre and above 5 acre. After the approval of the proposed increase of booking charges, the MCD will now charge Rs 20, 000 and Rs 40, 000 and one lakh for holding wedding reception or other programmes on farmhouses measuring below 2.5 acre, between 2.5 and 5 acre and above, respectively. Earlier, the prices were Rs 10,000 for below 2.5 acre and Rs 20,000 for above. However, the fee for farmhouse having area more than 5 acre has been fixed Rs one lakh. Currently, farmhouses in Delhi are divided into two categories, property having area below 5 acre but not less than 2.5 acre and farmhouses spreading over more than 5 acre. |
MP complains of threats from firm
New Delhi, March 14 According to complaint given by Vikrambhai Arjanbhai, MP from Jamnagar, he was threatened by the person as he was raising the issue of not providing proper price to the farmers in lieu of their land by the company. "A firm which is laying underground pipelines in Arjanbhai's constituency has been acquiring land from farmers without paying proper compensation in collusion with officials there. The MP has been raising his voice in this regard. We are investigating the matter," said a police official. The accused threatened the MP with dire consequences, if he did not stop meddling in the affair. |

Rapist dad gets 10-yr jail
New Delhi, March 14 "An act of rape is a gruesome and abhorring act. But when this act is committed by a father upon his daughter, then it leaves a permanent scar on the personality of the child, inhibiting growth and development. It instills a feeling of fear, insecurity and a brooding sense of shame and guilt for no fault of the victim," additional sessions judge Sunita Gupta said. The court, which also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 on convict Hoshiyar Singh, quoted noted writer Sigmund Freud to drive home the point that the father was the protector of a child. The victim, a school going child, had narrated her dreadful experience and the entire incident to her class teacher and the principal, who in turn, ensured the registration of FIR against her father. The court referred to the complaint lodged with the police in which the victim had alleged that her father, who was not on good terms with his wife, raped her on the February 6 last year. The accused also forced him on to her repeatedly and threatened against disclosing the incident, it said. "Considering the facts and circumstances detailed above, coupled with the aggravating factor that a gruesome act was committed by the convict, by which he had not only defiled the body of victim, but also put an indelible mark on her person which shall haunt her throughout her life that she is a victim of rape committed upon her person by her own father, as such the convict does not deserve any leniency in punishment," it said. - PTI |
‘Delhiites lack enough space for living’
New Delhi, March 14 It will be difficult to move on roads as 1,000 new cars add everyday to the existing number of vehicles. As far as water is concerned, the level has already gone to hundreds of feet down to the earth. This was discussed at a workshop "Delhi 2050 - an inclusive bottom-up planning process" organised by ARCHI, an NGO that has studied various mega cities. Master Plan of Delhi 2021 is not going to work out the problems being faced by the citizens of the city. It's only on the papers. To serve its purpose, it should involve the grass-root people of the city. Otherwise, all the efforts will go waste, said Anne Feenstra, principal in ARCHI. Developing satellite cities like Noida and Gurgaon is not a solution. There should be more high-rise buildings with proper facilities in the city, he said. Dunu Roy from Hazard Centre said Delhi would be a city of match boxes if adequate future planning, keeping in view the requirements in 2050, was not made. Six lakh families are going to be settled in Delhi in the coming years on an average plot size of 12.5 square metre, the amount of space that a car requires for parking. "Do we want Delhi with hundreds of thousands of these match boxes in 2050?" he questioned. He said there was a need for developing parking lots as thousands of cars were added to the roads everyday. When asked how to make the city livable, Roy said the city already was livable but the planners just did not see it. Government advisor for infrastructure in the Netherlands Ton Venhoeven felt problems in Delhi's development were more "frictional" than "fundamental" that could be resolved with careful long-term planning and good governance. Another senior official of the Netherlands Bart Vink said master plan should not be made in offices but in a public forum with high level of people participation. He said, "When we work on a city, we work on a live patient, not a patient who is on anaesthesia. It is imperative to understand this to face the challenge that "Delhi 2050" poses, he said. |
BJP calls on Prez against Chauhan
New Delhi, March 14 The memorandum said that the case deserved exemplary importance in view of the raging national debate on a spate of financial scams that have repeatedly exhibited the nexus among politicians, private individuals and corporations. It also said that any delay in action on the recommendation of the Lokayukta could be mistaken by the country for leniency towards corruption, misconduct of public functionaries and compromise of ethics. |
MCD to find ‘real age’ of staffers
New Delhi, March 14 According to the civic agency, earlier, the age of proof was not required for recruitment and therefore, many employees of the C and D categories had claimed to be younger than their actual age at the time of their joining. A number of such employees sometimes come late to work or do not show up at all, officials said. The MCD will bring a voluntary retirement policy for such employees. "However, if they do not respond to the policy, the head of the departments would ask these employees to go through a medical examination to detect their correct age," said an MCD official. A proposal in this regard will be brought before the MCD standing committee this week. The official said those found older than their age in the MCD records could be asked to take VRS. The retirement age for the civic body staff is 55 years. The examination will be conducted by a medical board. However, the proposal will have to be adopted by the standing committee and the House before it can be implemented. |

Rickshawpuller who raped
77-yr woman held
New Delhi, March 14 According to the police, Bhola Adivasi, hailing from Panna in Madhya Pradesh, was arrested last night after seven teams of policemen from five police stations interrogated more than 500 rickshawpullers of the area. According to Meenu Choudhury, DCP (Northwest), Adivasi came under suspicion after he failed to present himself before the police despite directions. Adivasi lived alone in Rohini's Sector 15. He came to Delhi in 2006 and initially worked as a mason. The shoe flap recovered from the spot of the crime matched with Adivasi's shoes. "We have seized chemicals used by him to make the victim unconscious," said a police official from the
K.N. Katju Marg police station. The victim was returning from her sister's residence in Rohini's Sector 15 on Friday night when the incident took place. Taking advantage of darkness, Adivasi took her to Japanese Park where he beat and raped. The victim was discovered lying unconscious in the park the next day by a passerby who informed the police. |
