Chidambaram to visit Jammu today
Jammu, February 2 Although the government is yet to forward a road map for the solution of the vexed problem, Congress leaders from Jammu Choudhary Lal Singh, Congress MP from Udhampur-Doda, cautioned that the demand for greater autonomy for Jammu and Kashmir was fraught with dangerous consequences. “Greater autonomy is the demand of an individual party and the majority of the people is not in its favour,” Lal Singh said. He warned that this demand may lead to the division of the state on communal and regional lines. Substantiating his argument, the MP said he represented a Lok Sabha constituency that comprised a mix population of people. “It is unwise to create a division among people on communal and regional lines only to accomplish the agenda of a particular political party,” he cautioned. Lal Singh said the real problem in the state was the governance deficit and there was a need to provide a government which was transparent and accountable. “Is any thing mentioned in the demand for greater autonomy about bringing transparency and accountability in the government?” he asked and advised the protagonists of autonomy to delegate the decision making power to the grass-roots level. “The question of accepting greater autonomy in any form does not arise. If the government is desperate to give greater autonomy, let it be confined only to the Kashmir valley because the people of Jammu or Ladakh do not want autonomy,” veteran Congress leader and former MP from Ladakh P Namgyal said. He told The Tribune that the people of Ladakh, irrespective of their party affiliations, would oppose the demand for greater autonomy tooth and nail. “Our demand is the Union Territory (UT) status for Ladakh and we would continue our struggle for it,” Namgyal said. Chidambaram is schedule to reach Jammu tomorrow evening. He would hold discussions with the Congress leaders to get their viewpoints on the solution to the Kashmir problem, especially regarding the recommendations of the interlocutors. |
Two MES employees found murdered
Udhampur, February 2 The news about the double murder spread like a wildfire in and around Udhampur and a large number of people, including MES employees and the relatives of the deceased, gathered near the complaint cell across the National Highway-IA. They then blocked the highway for about seven hours. The protesting relatives alleged that the police informed them about the crime two hours after receiving information about it. The angry protesters did not allow the police to shift the bodies from the complaint cell. They also raised slogans against the police and relented around 4.30 pm only after some senior Army officials of the Northern Command intervened. The bodies were then taken to the District Hospital, Udhampur, for a post-mortem. As the top brass of the district administration, including the DIG, Udhampur-Reasi Police Range, were in Jammu for a meeting of the District Development Board, Additional SP Bhupinder Singh was the only officer present in the district to handle the tense situation. The police had to divert the Jammu and Srinagar bound traffic from the Udhampur bypass as a large number of vehicles were held up due to the blockade. The Additional SP said the motive behind the crime was yet not clear. The police lost precious time of initial investigation due to the massive public protest. “We hope to crack the case soon,” he said. Meanwhile, it is the second murder case that has taken place in the jurisdiction of Rehamble police station in three days. A resident of Malhar village, alleged to be mentally unsound, killed his minor daughter with a sickle on January 30. |
