Minister Employment Generation Programme Amaninder Pal Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, December 9 Under the programme, which aims at providing employment to the unemployed youth, the target of providing subsidy to only 48 proposed units sounds both silly and irrational if compared with massive unemployment and huge scope available in Jalandhar for setting up new industrial units by providing the subsidy, ranging from 15 to 30 per cent of the total cost of the proposed project. This despite the fact that a good number of subsidy seekers have applied to the respective authorities to avail the benefits of the programme. As per sources, besides other authorities, the target to select and provide subsidy to 24 units out of total 48 has been assigned to district industrial department alone. Asked about the quite low number of targets assigned for the city, B.S. Brar, General Manager, Department of Industries, Jalandhar, said the target had been assigned contrary to our expectation as their was enough room in Jalandhar to generate employment by providing subsidy to those who aspire to set up their own micro enterprises. Under the PMEGP, the central government provides subsidy for the project with establishment cost up to Rs 25 lakh. The handicapped, scheduled castes, women candidates and cooperative societies are entitled to avail subsidy up to 35 per cent of the total project cost. Similarly, the beneficiaries of general category are given subsidy in the range of 25 and 15 per cent in rural and urban areas respectively. The programme is to be implemented by the district industrial centres and the State Khadi and Village Industries Boards (KVIB), with Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) being the nodal agency for the implementation of the programme. Brar said besides the target assigned to the industrial authorities, both KVIC and KVIB have also assigned to select and provide subsidy to 12 units each in the district. |
MC moots Chandan Nagar RUB
Jalandhar, December 9 The proposal is likely to be one of the issues on the agenda of the meeting of the MC House scheduled next week. The bridge once constructed would be of immense use for the residents on either side of crossing including those residing in Sodal area, Deen Dayal Upadhaya Nagar (where Mayor’s House is located), Gopal Nagar and Chandan Nagar. The RUB would also make commuting easy for the students of SD School, Seth Hukum Chand School and Shiv Jyoti School. The residents of the area had been demanding construction of the bridge since long. Quite a few accidents have taken place at the crossing in the recent past, especially around Sodal mela during which there is much rush across the crossing site. The railways authorities have already given their nod for the construction, said MC commissioner Viney Bublani. The only glitch may be because of some school land that needs to be acquired for the purpose. But the officials are quite confident of being able to resolve the matter. While funding for the project will be done by the MC, the construction work, except the railways part, is likely to be entrusted with the PWD (B&R). The officials of the department said they would moot the proposal in this regard in the House. Mayor Rakesh Rathour has also been taking keen interest in the project for obvious reasons. This is being done since the officials of the MC have already given a representation that they are overworked and understaffed and would not be able to take up another project of the sort. |
Rubber
import Amaninder Pal Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, December 9 This was revealed by Vinod Simon, president of the All India Rubber Industries Association (AIRIA), who was in the city to attend a promotional meet regarding the four-day India Rubber Expo 2011, which is to be held at Chennai from January 19-22. The meet was organised by AIRIA, in association with the Jalandhar Rubber Goods Manufacturers Association. He said the proposal to import one lakh tonne of natural rubber at 7.5 per cent was floated by the expert panel constituted by the government, after the court’s direction, given after the major associations of rubber goods and tyre manufacturers of the country filed a writ petition against the exorbitant 20 per cent import duty imposed on the import of natural rubber. Expecting a positive outcome of the writ petition, he said the panel also recommended charging of either 20 per cent import duty of the total cost of natural rubber or Rs 20 per kg, whichever is lesser. “As the proposals were made for the current financial year, the recommendations would be of no use if their materialisation takes a few more months”, he added. He said surprisingly, the government has imposed 10 per cent import duty on manufactured rubber goods and contrarily imposed 20 per cent on natural rubber, thus, indirectly forcing smaller units to close shop and bigger rubber manufacturers to shift their production units to other countries. |
