Helping mothers of autistic
kids
Jalandhar, November 30 Mothers of autistic children from across the state have been coming to the centre to attend the three-month course, which they feel helps them handle and improve the faculties of their autistic children in a better way. They sit and discuss their learning disabilities, communication problems, formulate strategies and course plan to work on these problems, offer suggestions to one another and pinpoint any visible signs of improvement in the children. There is a bunch of activities that are planned for the children daily using various educational aids. The mothers claim that their children, who otherwise are not really social by nature, had also started looking forward to the two-hour class every evening. Anjali Dada, in charge of the centre and mother of autistic child Dhananjay, revealed that she had herself taken the training for the purpose from the Delhi-based Action for Autism. “The idea of running the centre is not just to pass down the training tips to the mothers, but also help them have a feel of the positive vibes around, uplift their morale and just keep going,” she said. Anumeha, mother of Rahat, said her son was suffering from autism as well as cerebral palsy. “But he certainly has started showing improvement ever since I have taken the training and started doing home schooling for him,” she said. Satyam’s mother Kanchan, too, has been a regular at the centre. “Since I am local, I continued to get my son to the centre even after completion of the training. We have been learning from one another daily,” she added. A schoolteacher, Suman has been commuting daily from Kapurthala every evening just to ensure a training from herself and her son Vivek. Rimpy, yet another mother, has been coming daily from Jandu Singha just to ensure she can learn some ways to improve the life of her son Vansh. It is not just mothers, but also dads who often join in and like to note the progress of their children. Anuj Dada says, “The ultimate aim is to develop a soch (perception) that life still is beautiful and we should never feel defeated”. |
Fake cases on rise
Jalandhar, November 30 The police arrested truck driver Harpreet Singh, alias Happy, of Panodita village falling under Bullowal police station on Tuesday for enacting a drama of theft of the truck loaded with gate walls worth Rs 15 lakh. Happy was taking the truck to Ahmedabad in Gujarat to deliver the assignment of gate walls at the behest of the truck owner Suba Singh of Bishanpur village in Kapurthala district. He enacted a drama on the night of November 28. The driver informed Suba Singh that he had parked the truck outside Delhi Punjab Goods Carriers falling under police station number two for some time but when he came out, he did not find the truck there. Subsequently, Suba Singh informed the police which registered an FIR under section 379 of the IPC. The ADCP said the police found flaws in Happy’s statement. When he was grilled, he revealed the truth and confessed that he had enacted the drama to sell the loaded material. He said he took the truck to his acquaintance’s place on the Pathankot road. He made a conspiracy to sell the gate walls a few days later and abandon the truck thereafter. A thorough investigation by DSP Bahadur Singh and SHO Sukhdeep Singh led to the findings in the case. Subsequently, the police arrested Happy and changed the sections (406, 511, 420 and 381 of IPC) in the FIR. The police cracked a similar false case of kidnapping on Monday. The police caught Rahul, a barber, for staging a drama of his kidnapping for getting ransom from his wife for paying off his debt. Earlier, four persons, including an NRI woman Rajwinder Kaur, were arrested for hatching a conspiracy to implicate Harjit Singh, her UP-based brother-in-law, in a robbery case by enacting a drama of looting. Similarly, in the last week of September, the police nabbed Pawan Sharma, a resident of Arbaz Nagar, for allegedly enacting a drama of snatching a bag containing cash and jewellery. The police also cracked a case whereby a youth had lodged a false complaint of motorcycle theft. Kalia said no person would be spared who tries to misguide the police by lodging false complaints. |
Awareness drive to curb illegal immigration
Jalandhar, November 30 The campaign, which has been largely funded by the Government of Belgium, will be organised in coordination with the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), an intergovernmental organisation with 127 countries as its member and working for the promotion of international cooperation on migration issues and promotion of international migration laws. Paramjit Singh Sahay, Principal Adviser, CRRID, who also earlier served as an Indian Ambassador to Malaysia, said owing to very high rate of illegal human trafficking from Doaba region, the ministry and organisations concerned had zeroed in their efforts over the region. Quoting the estimates given in the recently compiled report of the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime (UNODC), he said around 20,000 youth from Punjab tried to cross international border annually. As an element of illegality was involved in such immigrations, they obviously could not ascertain the exact figure in this regard, said Sahay. He said Punjab was the worst affected state in the country in this context, second being Andhra Pradesh. Dr Krishan Chand, Associate Research Coordinator at CRRID, who is also coordinator of the project, said extended public gatherings would be organised at 10 block-level headquarters and 20 various big villages of the district. He said masses would be educated regarding the various legal immigration channels through cultural performances, including plays, songs, movies, documentaries and skits. Dr Chand said the campaign would also be organised in other districts of the state and the departments and organisations involved would also try to persuade immigration agents not to adopt illegal measures. |
