CETP at leather complex fails to solve problem
Jalandhar, November 25 As per sources, as of now around 25 MLD domestic sewer waste is thrown into the drain through the total 11 major outlets of domestic sewer. The project to divert around 15 MLD domestic sewerage waste by connecting eight major domestic sewerage outlets with main sewerage network is still under way and would be accomplished in the coming weeks. However, the CETP is loosing its core essence as even after the completion of the 15 MLD domestic sewerage waste diversion project, the remaining three major outlets would continue to drain over 10 MLD domestic waste into the drain, at least for one more year. Established with the spirit that the water treated by the plant, estimate quantity of which is around 5 million litres per day (MLD), would be used for the field irrigation by the villages situated alongside the drain, the treatment plant was constructed with an estimate cost of Rs 18 crore and its running cost soars around Rs 25 lakh per month. Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal, who is leading the struggle to make the Kala Sanghian darin free of pollution, said the CETP did not solve the problem until the sewerage waste generated by the localities, which fall under the jurisdiction of the Municipal Corporation, was blocked off. “If pollution laws are applicable on the owners of industries, why can’t they be enforced on the corporation authorities concerned? They are equally responsible for polluting the drain,” said Seechewal. On the other hand, the sewerage authorities are suggesting the setting up of another sewerage treatment plant near Basti Peerdaad as an alternative. However, good enough damage would be done as it would take around one and half year to construct the plant. “Tendering process for the STP is already under way and it would take around one and half year to construct and run the plant,” said a senior official of the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board, Jalandhar. |

Jaggery units mushroom along highways
Phagwara, November 25 The units, which start operation in October, will continue to crush sugarcane till March. Besides manufacturing gur and shakkar, the jaggery makers also market their products. For example, a kilogram of plain gur can be sold for Rs 40, spicy gur from Rs 50 to Rs 55 and shakkar between Rs 50 and Rs 55. A migrant labourer from UP, Sham Lal, told The Tribune that they came here every year along with the machinery and crushed about 70 quintals of sugarcane and sell 40 to 55 kg of gur and shakkar daily on the Phagwara-Jalandhar highway. These units buy sugarcane directly from farmers at a price varying from Rs 200 to Rs 300 depending upon the quality of the sugarcane content against the government’s procurement price of Rs 190 to Rs 200 a quintal. “Generally small farmers prefer to sell their produce directly to them as they give instant payment, whereas the mills take months to release the payment,” says Tehal Singh, a farmer of Rihana Jattan village in Kapurthala district. However, different officials, including the Chief Cane Manager of Wahid Sandhar Sugar Mills Phagwara, Charanjit Singh Walia, alleged here today that the state government was facing a loss of lakhs of rupees as no sales tax was being paid by the Jaggery manufacturers as all these units were illegal and were running without valid registration. Although the sugar mill authorities claim that these units are illegal, there is no denying the fact that the farmers are benefiting from these by getting cash on daily basis. Moreover, these units are providing employment to hundred of labourers. |
