Army open recruitment rally: Youths turn up in large number
Jalandhar, October 26 The Army authorities expressed satisfaction over the fact that the response from the Doaba belt had improved as compared to the previous rallies. The recruitment rally was conducted by Army Recruiting Office (HQ), Jalandhar, under the aegis of HQ Recruiting Zone (Punjab and J & K), Jalandhar Cantonment. The recruitment rally is being held for soldier general duty and soldier tradesman categories, hailing from Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur and Shahid Bhagat Singh Nagar districts. Deputy director general (recruiting), HQ recruiting zone (Punjab and J & K), Col Sanjeev Sirohi said the response from Hoshiarpur was overwhelming as compared to the other three districts. “We received approximately 6,000 youths from Hoshiarpur. Youths from all castes and categories appeared for the recruitment rally, which made it a huge success”, he added. Even response from the other three districts also improved as compared to the previous rallies, the DDG (recruiting) maintained. “A total of 10,270 candidates from all the four districts appeared for the rally, while 990 candidates have cleared the preliminary test till now,” said Col Sanjeev. “However, the final number of selected candidates would be available later,” he added. Further, addressing a query pertaining to increasing the Rrecruitable Male Population (RMP) in Jammu and Kashmir in the wake of recent turmoil in the state, the DDG (recruiting) said RMP is fixed according to the census reports of a particular state and decisions regarding this are taken by the ministry of defence. “The RMP cannot be changed arbitrarily as it is directly linked with the population of a state. At present, the RMP of Jammu and Kashmir is 1 per cent while that of Punjab is 2.44 per cent. The present recruitments are being conducted under the laid down RMP percentage”, the officer added. The Physical Fitness Tests (PFT) and Physical Measurement Test (PMT) of the candidates were completed today. While the medical tests for successful candidates will continue till tomorrow. The written examination of successful candidates would also be held at the Dogra Ground on October 31. Meanwhile, the Army would be conducting its next rally in Punjab at Ferozepur from November 18 to 23. “The media has a major role to play in making the youth aware about the recruitment rallies. And we wish to see similar turnout in the next rally too”, the officers added. |
Burlton Park Youth Hostel Work in its last leg
Jalandhar, October 26 Last year, MS Gill had taken up the issue of the completion of the youth hostel on priority, and had directed the officials concerned to check as to why the youth hostel project had failed. The work on the state-of-the-art hostel is about to get completed. It would provide the best of lodging facilities to scores of players and students who come for various events in the city educational institutions. It was due to the lack of a proper lodging facility in the city that earlier many cultural and sports events had to be cancelled owing to the lack of proper hostel facilities in the city limits. Talking to The Tribune, deputy director of youth welfare, Capt IS Dhami said the finishing work of the hostel is in its last leg and as soon as it is completed, it would be handed over to our department. “Though entire work is over, we are yet to get a permanent electricity connection. Once the connection is restored, the hostel would be completely ready for use”, he added. Coming up in an acre of land on the left side of the entrance gate of the local Burlton Park, the hostel can accommodate 60 youths and has been designed with six dormitories, five bedrooms, a drawing room, a recreation hall, library and a table tennis court. The hostel has been hanging fire for the past 20 years. While it took 17 years for the project to begin, owing to political and bureaucratic reasons, the construction work of the hostel had earlier come to a halt due to an objection raised by the Auditor General of India (AGI). Last year deputy secretary, youth affairs and sports, DP Bharadwaj, had come for an inspection along with youth hostel warden from Dalhousie, Samuel, for the inspection of under-construction youth hostel here. |

Dance? No Problem!
International celebrities make way. Director Anees Bazmi says he's more than happy to have Bollywood's own sizzling stars, Sushmita Sen and Kangana Ranaut, to scorch the dance floor for a song in his forthcoming film No Problem.
"There was no time to get any international celebrity. Our film is complete. Our first trailer was out with Anjaana Anjaani. We just decided to add an extra title song. And we felt we don't really need outside contributions. Sushmita and Kangna are fabulous dancers," Bazmi said. There were reports earlier that No Problem might see Waka Waka girl Shakira shake a leg. The number featuring Sushmita, the former Miss Universe, and Kangana, who isn't seen in many dance numbers, will be choreographed by Ahmed Khan. And the buzz is that the two divas will pull out all stops in front of the camera to outdo each other. Apparently the role models given to Ahmed Khan go back to Vyjanthimala and Helen in the sizzling dance combat in the 1960s Prince and Hema Malini and Parveen Babi in the 1970s' The Burning Train. Both Sushmita and Kanagana enjoy dancing and the idea would be to make their moves as casual and cool as possible. The actors in the film- Sanjay Dutt, Anil Kapoor and Sunil Shetty - are also expected to join the two ladies on the dance floor in No Problem, which is set to release in December. —
