Labourers work at dangerous heights without safety nets or belts Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service
Jalandhar, September 23 Throwing all norms to the wind, labourers work at a height of more than 60 feet without using safety belts or safety nets. Even those working on the ground do not wear any helmet, to avoid any eventuality in case of construction material falling over the heads. In fact, all these safety materials can be seen ‘displayed’ along the poles put up across high walls of MBD Neopolis. While labourers have been plastering cement on the outer walls of the building for the past four days, standing on horizontal bamboo shafts, the contractors or project supervisors working on the spot have not cared to ensure that safety equipment is put to use to secure their lives. Raman Kumar, construction in charge, said, “These people avoid using safety belts for they feel uneasy during movement.” Asked why the safety nets were not used, he replied, “They have got used to working on a height”. Just next to this building is the under-construction City Square where too, labourers were seen working today just on the edges of the sixth floor of the building. Rajan Chopra, a partner, said he had given the construction work to a contractor. “The contractor has provided all safety equipment but these men refuse to put them on. We educate them as well but to no avail”, he said. Assistant Labour Commissioner Inderjit Singh, however, said as per the Building and Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment and Services Act) Act, 1996, it was mandatory for builders to ensure safety or else they could face a severe penalty amounting to imprisonment or fine or both. |
