Jind, September 13 The police has booked a case of murder against some persons, including the father of the girl, Ramraji, hailing from Brahmanwas village. The victims, Vikas Dhanda (20) and Ritu (18), were residing in a hostel in New Delhi to prepare for engineering and medical entrance exams. They were here to meet their parents. Surjewala supports Jats’ quota demand
Chandigarh, September 13 Senior Congress leader and national president of the Kisan Khet Mazdoor Congress Shamsher Singh Surjewala said the demand was justified but agitations and violence would only harm the interests of the Jats. He alleged that the violent agitations had been sponsored by those politicians, who were against the Congress. While other agriculture communities like Gujjars, Ahirs, Sainis, Kurmis and Lodhas had been included in the central list of the OBCs, the Jats had been excluded. .States like Rajasthan, UP, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh had included the Jats in their lists of OBCs. Surjewala said three months ago, he had met AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi along and raised the demand for inclusion of Jats in the OBC list. Rahul, he said, was sympathetic towards the demand. Later, he met AICC president Sonia Gandhi. About a month ago, the PM had written to all tates to inform the Centre on more castes be included in the list of OBCs .It was just a question of time when the demand of the Jats would be accepted. |
Power to cost more from October 1
Chandigarh, September 13 While agriculture consumers will continue to pay the old rates, all other categories will have to pay more. For domestic consumers, the HERC has continued the telescopic tariff but has introduced a new slab of 301-500 units. A domestic consumer will now have to pay 12 paise per unit to 62 paise per unit more, depending upon how much electricity he uses. Similarly, small non-domestic consumers will pay 21 paise per unit more. Large users in the non-domestic category will pay 41 paise per unit more, but they will have to pay Rs 130 per kW as fixed charges, a new concept, in addition. The industry, on an HT connection, will pay 6 paise per unit more besides Rs 120/kW as fixed charges while on an LT connection (up to 20 kW) it will pay a nominal 2 paise extra and above 20 kW, fixed charges of Rs 100 per kW will also be levied. Chairman of the HERC Bhaskar Chatterjee said the utilities, in their annual revenue requirement (ARR), had shown a gap of Rs 5,596 crore while a gap of Rs 732 crore was left uncovered last year. However, the HERC found a gap of Rs 1,900 crore, which it had allowed them to cover this year. The last year’s gap had been again left uncovered so that too much burden was not put on the consumers. The utilities would have to borrow to cover this gap. Chatterjee said the commission did not want to give a “tariff shock” to the consumers and had also considered the paying capacity of different categories of
consumers. |
Flood threat looms large over Sirsa, Fatehabad
Sirsa/Fatehabad, September 13 “The Nalli (as the Ghaggar is described in local parlance) has swelled and we fear water can inundate our fields anytime if the level does not recede soon,” said a farmer from Talwara village in Fatehabad. Om Parkash, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department at Tohana in Fatehabad, admitted that the situation had worsened during the past 24 hours. “The discharge of water at Guhla Cheeka has reached 48,000 cusecs, the highest in recent days. The maximum discharge recoded this month before this was 43,000 cusecs on Friday, but it had receded to 32,000 cusecs the next day,” the XEN said. The discharge at Khanauri and Chandpur was 12,200 cusecs and 12,100 cusecs, respectively, today. In Sirsa, 12,900 cusecs of water was flowing downstream of Ottu Weir in the Ghaggar today. Special girdawari from today
Yamunanagar, September 13 Talking to mediapersons, Hooda said the water had further receded and the National Highway-73 A had been opened for small vehicles yesterday. The Yamuna water level had also started decreasing. However, due to heavy rain yesterday in some parts of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh, the water in the Hathnikund and Tajewala headworks in this district was about 50,000 cusecs. Sources said the situation was under control. He said several acres had been affected in the district due to the flood waters. He said drinking water, food packets, kerosene and other essential commodities were being provided to the affected people. The overflowing Yamuna and seasonal rivulets, including Somnadi and Pathrala, have wrecked havoc on the district, submerging several villages and damaging crops on thousands of acres. Water entered houses at some places, forcing people to take shelter on rooftops. The Chief Minister said apart from compensating farmers for the damage to crops, a survey would also be conducted to assess the damage caused to houses so that people could be compensated. He visited Urjani, Oderi, Kait, Mandi, Lapra, Sandhala and Gumthala villages and assured farmers that they would be adequately compensated. KARNAL: Hooda on Monday visited the Indri belt and announced that officials had been directed to conduct a special girdawari from Tuesday. Hooda also announced compensation to villagers whose houses had been damaged by the floods. He assured that compensation amounting to Rs 2 crore would be distributed to flood victims of 2008 shortly. Meanwhile, Karnal received a record rainfall of 1,023 mm till Monday which was 12 mm more than the highest rainfall of 1011.2 mm recorded 14 years ago. PANIPAT: The flood situation in Panipat that had turned grave following a breach in the embankments of the Yamuna between Pathargarh and Tamsabad villages on September 10 remained under control on Monday as the Yamuna water level went down. Meanwhile, Rajeev Sharma, Commissioner, Rohtak division, visited some flood-affected areas in the Bapoli segment. |
Panipat police in dock for delay in FIR
Chandigarh, September 13
Directions were also issued for fair and proper investigation of the case. The directions came two years after BBMB employee Vinod Kumari’s body was found listless on the floor. The matter was brought to the high court’s notice by her brother Brij Bhushan of Jalandhar. He was seeking directions to the Panipat SP and the SHO of the city police station to conduct proper investigation and register an FIR against Ram Singh and Naresh of Panipat’s Purewal Colony for committing his sister’s murder. Counsel for the petitioner Munish Bhardwaj said the incident took place on April 4, 2008. The FIR was not registered even though valuables, including jewellery, were found missing and a briefcase was ripped apart. The petitioner also enclosed photographs of the lifeless victim in a room with belongings strewn all around. Taking a sensitive note of the photographs, Justice Nirmaljit Kaur observed a status report dated September 8 of Panipat SP Rajinder Singh. The report, prepared almost two years after the incident, indicates that FIR No 383 dated August 20 under Section 460 has been finally registered at the Model Town police
station. Justice Nirmaljit Kaur asserted Sub-Inspector Prithvi Raj was stated to have visited the spot and also prepared the inquest report. However, surprisingly, the FIR was not registered and was registered only after a lapse of two years. |
Ruchika Case
Chandigarh, September 13 As Rathore’s plea for quashing the FIR came up for hearing before the Division Bench of Chief Justice Mukul Mudgal and Justice Ajay Tewari, the CBI opposed the plea for quashing the fresh FIR in the Ruchika case. Asserting the plea was liable to be rejected, CBI SP Binita Thakur said the petitioner had neither been tried nor convicted for offence punishable under Section 306 of the IPC for abetment to suicide. As such, there was “no question of violation of Article 21 of the Constitution of India”. The SP added that investigations were in progress and at a crucial stage. The CBI was not acting under media or any other pressure. The CBI had earlier alleged that Rathore had, on the face of it, “unleashed reign of terror” on Ruchika Girhotra’s family. The assertion came a day after the state government entrusted the investigations in the fresh cases against Rathore to the CBI. So far, the CBI has registered three cases against Rathore, including abetment to suicide |

Panel to solve traders’ problems
Chandigarh, September 13 Addressing a felicitation function organised by the Haryana Rajya Vyapar Mandal here, Hooda urged the traders to take a pledge not to give bribe to anybody and inform the government about corrupt officials, as strict action would be taken against them. If the trading community extended its support, Haryana could become corruption-free, he added. Hooda said the government would take strict action against criminals and would not let them live in the state. During the INLD government, he alleged, criminals were given government protection. He reminded that when he took over as Chief Minister, he had given a call to the criminals to join the mainstream or leave the state. It worked and only a few had remained outside the mainstream. |
Worker touches live wire, battles for life
Sirsa, September 13 The victim’s family alleged that a junior engineer of the DHBVN forced him to climb the electric pole despite inclement weather by threatening to show him the door. The condition of the victim identified as Atam Parkash (30) is stated to be critical. “He was not willing to climb the pole due to rainy weather, but JE Satish Kumar forced him to go up by threatening to remove him from service,” alleged Kuldeep Kumar, a cousin of the victim. He said the poor victim had to comply with the orders, as the job that fetched him a meagre salary of Rs 3,000 a month, was very important for the survival of his family comprising wife and two children. “As he was working on the pole, his head came in touch with live electric wires and he fell down,” Kuldeep said. He alleged that no officer of the DHBVN had come forward to help his cousin. Joginder Singh, SDO of the DHBVN, said the victim had climbed the pole for repairs without caring to get the high tension line passing near the pole closed. Marksheet racket unearthed, 1 held
Kaithal, September 13 The accused was produced in a local court today, which remanded him in two-day police custody. The police wants to extract information from him about his accomplices and the machinery used for preparing fake marksheets. SSP Sandeep Khirwar told mediapersons here today that Sajjan Singh, a resident of Sandeel village in the district, yesterday informed the police that a local resident, Rakesh Mahajan, owner of the Shanker paper mart in the Sikka market here, allegedly supplied Class X fake marksheets for Rs 2,000 each. Paroda favours tech agents
Karnal, September 13 Talking to mediapersons, Dr Paroda, who was here to attend the 33rd Foundation Day celebrations of the Directorate of Wheat Research (DWR), said there was no dearth or shortage of technology. “But the problem is how to take the latest technology to the farms to enable them to reap the benefit,” he said. Emphasising that proper linkage between the agricultural sector and the industry was a must to boost farm economy and to raise the per capita income, Paroda said there was a need to create “technology agents” to act as carriers of new technologies from laboratories to the farmers. Besides, vocational training should be imparted to them by universities. Krishi Vigyan Kendras and agri-clinics should be set up across the country. Suggesting linkages between private entrepreneurs and farmers, Dr Paroda said this should not only confine to marketing, but to providing technical and other assistance to the farmers, from buying seeds till harvesting and marketing the farm produce. |
