New Delhi, September 13 Sushil yesterday defeated local favourite Gogaev Alan 3-1 in the final to clinch the title in Moscow, an achievement for which India had to wait for 59 years. The World Champion now wants to win a gold at next month's Commonwealth Games. "Winning gold medal at World Championships is a huge achievement for me after Beijing Olympic Games and before the Commonwealth Games. My next target is to win a gold medal in the Delhi Games," the Haryana grappler said. "I feel really fortunate to become the first ever Indian wrestler to win a gold at the World Championship. I have been able to achieve this because of the entire country's support and blessings." The Olympics bronze medallist predicted India will dominate the October sporting extravaganza. "I firmly believe that Indians can win all the 21 medals in as many categories. I also feel that we can win at least 13-14 gold medals because we have got good practise," he said. Talking about his achievement, he said, "It was tough because gold, silver and bronze medallists of 2008 Beijing Olympics were there in the fray. But my toughest bout was in semifinal against Azerbaijan opponent as he has recently become European Champion beating Olympic gold and silver medallists." "I had to face the home favourite from Russia in the final and that was also tough," he added. After getting a bye in the first round, he had beaten Akritidis of Greece, Martin Sebastian of Germany and Buyan Jav of Mongolia en route to the summit clash. PM lauds Sushil
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today congratulated Sushil Kumar for becoming the first Indian wrestler to win a gold medal at the World Championships in Moscow. "Sushil Kumar has done the country proud and is a role model for the youth," Singh said in a message. The Prime Minister said Kumar has shown spirit, determination and skill in his craft to become the first Indian to win a gold at the premier international championship.

MI look to win against Redbacks
Durban, September 13 The Indian Premier League runners-up started their campaign in the showpiece event on a disappointing note, going down to Highveld Lions by just nine runs in Johannesburg in the first match of the tournament. But Lions then fell prey to South Australia, who beat the local side by 11 runs in another keenly-contested encounter in Centurion. Batting is not a worry for the Mumbai team with in-form Tendulkar opening their innings with Shikhar Dhawan, followed by experienced players like South African J P Duminy and the hard hitting West Indian Kieron Pollard coming down the order. Tendulkar cracked a 62-ball 69 in the previous match and took the team close to a win but his effort went in vain as the lower-middle order failed to contribute with the bat. Ambati Rayudu, who is playing in the one-down position, and R Satish also have to find their touch as soon as possible to help the team post a fighting score or chase down a stiff target. Left-arm pacer Zaheer Khan will spearhead the Mumbai bowling attack, while the team will also expect early breakthroughs from fast bowler Ryan McLaren. Seasoned off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga can also make batsmen's life miserable at the floodlit Kingsmead ground. But high on confidence after starting their campaign in style, the Michael Klinger-led South Australia would put up an all-out effort to beat their Indian opponents. Warriors beat Victoria
Port Elizabeth: Warriors defeated Victoria by 28 runs in their Group A match of the Champions League twenty20 tournament here today. Brief Scores: Warriors:

Time for the BIG American dream
Ludhiana, September 13 If all goes well than the 14-year-old and 7ft tall athlete could well be an answer to his Chinese counterpart 7.6ft Yo-Ming in the National Basketball Association (NBA) in America. Satta is all set to fly to Florida to join the internationally famed IMG- Reliance scholarship scheme from September 16 to improve his technique. He is the only cager from India to be selected for training at the IMG academy known for producing eminent international golf, soccer, basketball, baseball and tennis players. A find of Teja Singh Dhaliwal, Satta, who is popular as Khali-II among his peers, broke into tears as he met his friends. “I will try my best to make the dream of my friends come true. The academy has given me everything. At the age of 14, I have had the opportunity to visit three countries, which a normal boy of my age could never imagine. Now, it is time to give it back and I promise I will not disappoint them. I will try to make the most of the opportunity,” said the 250-pound cager. Recalling the moment when Satta first came to the academy along with his parents from village Balloke near Rampura Phool, Teja Singh Dhaliwal said, “He was just eight-year-old when he was brought to the academy. Then, his height was 5.9 ft. His father, who was the sarpanch of the village, was equally tall person. He requested me to take his son to the academy. I gleefully accepted his proposal and within four years he has grown 7ft tall.” NBA director in India Troy Justice was impressed with Satnam and suggested his name to the Basketball clubs in the US. |
