HIV women denied abortion by hospitals
New Delhi, August 22 “I along with my team visited a hospital in south Delhi for carrying research on the access of health facilities like abortion services to women with HIV and the picture was indeed upsetting. Though in retrospective, with the interview carried in 2008, the scenario remains the same,” the regional coordinator of ICW-APN, Anandi Yuvraj told The Tribune. Apart from the anti-retro-viral drugs, mandated by the national anti-retro-viral project, woman patients are largely refused other health services. They are refused when they want to stop an unwanted pregnancy and the same goes for other crucial treatment and surgeries, she added. To add to their woes, other family members throw them (women and children) out of houses when they are diagnosed as HIV positive and thus compelling them to live a stigmatised life. Stressing the need for making people aware of medical aspects associated with HIV/AIDS, director of NAZ Foundation, Anjali Gopalan said, “The discrimination and stigma—still prevalent in schools, hospitals and within families—has to come to an end. It’s happening in the national Capital, imagine what might be the situation in other parts of the country.” Expressing displeasure on the National AIDS Control Organisation’s verbal acknowledgement of the complaint that NAZ had lodged on August 11, she demanded that NACO should come up with a public notice against the discrimination. In solidarity to the purpose, secretary of International Conference on Population and Development, Jaya Velankar said NACO should issue a notice or public advisory that people with HIV/AIDS cannot be discriminated based on their positive status. There should be an advisory, stating that the disease does not spread through touch or eating with HIV positive patients, but it only transmits through penetrative sex, blood transfusion and unsafe use of syringes, she added. |

He was absconding till late evening today. Vipin's body has been sent for postmortem. The cause of death will be revealed once we get the postmortem report," said Singh. Dengue: Govt starts several services
New Delhi, August 22 Eight mobile vans have been stationed in Okhla near Jamia Nagar in south-east Delhi, officials said. Being one of the worst affected by the disease, over a dozen dengue deaths have been reported from the area, according to the Holy Family Hospital. "The mobile vans will be used to transport patients to Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital in Malviya Nagar and back. Two Centralised Accident and Trauma Services (CATS) ambulances have been stationed at Batla House and Abul Fazal Enclave," the directorate health services (DHS) said in one of the advisories on Sunday. Meanwhile, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital in Shahdara and Madan Mohan Malviya Hospital will operate 24 hours to treat the patients. Blood storage facilities are available in eight major city hospitals like Guru Teg Bahadur, G.B. Pant, Lok Nayak, among others. The state government has also launched a 12-hour special helpline -- 22307145 -- which will be operational from 8 am to 8 pm. It issued several advisories in various newspapers, stating the symptoms of and preventive measures for the vector-borne disease and urging the people not to panic. Delhi on Saturday reported 36 cases of dengue - the highest in a single day this year, taking the total number of cases to 384, according to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). However, the private hospitals claim much higher numbers. Moolchand Hospital has reported 35 cases while Max Healthcare says the total number of dengue patients is 224 at two of its branches. Apollo Hospital has received 41 cases till now. With the Commonwealth Games round the corner, officials of the health department are evidently a worried lot. They are working overtime to control the dengue menace before the October event to portray a positive picture of the host city. MCD Commissioner K.S. Mehra said this week that no civic body employee would get weekly off till the monsoon season gets over. MCD spokesperson Deep Mathur said: "Our officials have been working overtime with hand-held fogging machines to prevent further outbreak of dengue. Additional vehicle-mounted fogging machines have also been deployed." Dengue is transmitted by the bite of the Aedes mosquito. High fever for four-five days is usually accompanied by severe headache, pain in the eyes, muscles and joints, and rashes. After the fever goes, the platelet counts start dipping - the most dangerous phase of the disease. - IANS |
Elevated road on drain may be extended after CWG
New Delhi, August 22 According to public works minister Raj Kumar Chauhan, the road, which is likely to be inaugurated in the first week of September, may be extended in both the eastern and southern directions after the event. The government has plans to extend the road beyond the Games Village to the trans-Yamuna area and beyond the Nehru Stadium to INA Market in south Delhi, he said. Chauhan said that a proposal related to the road's extension would be discussed by the Cabinet after the Games were over. "The whole process may take six-eight months," he said. The four-kilometre elevated road, built at a cost of nearly Rs 550 crore, will be thrown open to the public after the Games. For the first time in India, advanced construction technology was used to build an elevated road over traffic crossings, without blocking the movement of vehicles. An official said the biggest challenge of the project was to construct the elevated road without disturbing traffic at five traffic intersections which it crossed. The project for linking east Delhi with Nehru Stadium was first approved in 2006. The earlier plan was to build a tunnel between the Games Village and the stadium but this was rejected. In August 2008, the government decided to go ahead with the elevated road over the drain. IANS |

Writer daughter raises toast to PM dad
by Devi Cherian It was a week of book releases in the Capital. It started with the book release of Prime Minister's daughter Daman Singh. Must hand it to the Dilliwallahs that even as Delhi was jammed and traffic had come to a standstill because of a heavy rains, people arrived on time. This is Daman's second work of fiction. Her mother Gursharan Kaur released the book in the presence of her family members, sans papa. Her sister Upinder was present along with her husband and son. Daman's husband Ashok Patnaik is a senior IB Officer and they have a teenaged son. Excerpts of the book were read by educationist Abha Adams. Montek Singh Ahluwalia and his wife Isher were present and looked very much at home. Daman raised a toast to her father for the high moral standards he had set for his family. Daman is now turning her attention on her parents' biography where she wants to understand her parents as a couple and individually too. Though no one spelt it out, the day could also have been termed a celebration of sorts as the PM topped the list of 10 top leaders of the world that day. Khushwant, 95, proactive as ever
The second book release where Gursharan Kaur had a great time was at Khushwant Singh's launch. At 95, Khushwant may have become frail, but he is as proactive and productive as ever. At this birthday-cum-book launch party, it was clear that the Prime Minister's family shares an old relationship with Khushwant. For a change, in this book there is no malice, just praise for Manmohan Singh. He has rated Manmohan Singh as the best Prime Minister the country has had. MJ Akbar said Khushwant has trained an entire generation of journalists and taught them how not to fall in love with words. Khushwant even praised Mani Shankar Aiyar for his attack on Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi. Gursharan Kaur went home happy as Khushwant bookmarked page 69 in which he has praised the Prime Minister. Kites dot Independence Day sky
The sky in Delhi this year on Independence Day saw thousands of kites flying. Old Dilliwallahs from Lal Kuan where the kite bazaar is, let loose thousands of peace kites. It is also a part of seasonal joy since traditionally kite-flying is common during the saawan festivals of Rakshabandhan and Janamashtami. Even as there are fashionable and modern kites with pictures of film actors, wrestlers and fancy signs on them, the Tricolour outnumbered them all. Chinese kites are also available which are a bit more expensive but are in demand for their elaborate and exotic shapes. Kite-flying is an expression of freedom. Patangbaazi, as the Dilliwallahs call it, is done to show their patriotism. It has also become a part of festivals in various parts of the country. In Rajasthan and Gujarat, kites are flown on Makar Sankranti, in South on Pongal, in Punjab on Basant Panchami and in Delhi, on Independence Day and Republic Day. |
