Lid off food grain misuse
UT’s dept of food and supplies indicted

The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has indicted the UT’s department of food and supplies for committing irregularities in maintenance of Below Poverty Line (BPL) and Above Poverty Line (APL) cards and monitoring of procurement, allocation and distribution of food grains.

Police to seek legal opinion

The Mohali Police would seek legal opinion in the inquiry being conducted into the circumstances leading to the death of Dr Gurpreet Kaur, mother of YPS Class VII student Rattanpreet, who was allegedly thrashed by his two teachers during a trip to Manali recently.

Chandigarh, June 5

The soil around 63 trees in the area was dug up by the municipal corporation to extend parking space. Worst fears of horticulture experts came true, as they spotted an uprooted tree at the rear side of Hotel Shivalik View on the World Environment Day today. Fifteen-year-old Chakrasia tree with a trunk of around 3-ft diameter was one of the 63 trees that were left to fall by digging the soil around them to extend the parking space last month.

PU: Hostel allocation forms in depts

Separate forms for hostel allocation in Panjab University will now be available in respective departments at the time of admission in July 2010.In a bid to clear the bottleneck likely to arise this year due to the newly introduced centralised system of hostel allocation on the campus, the office of Dean Student Welfare is gearing up to propose certain curative measures to the Vice-Chancellor in advance.

‘No vehicle day’ marks Environment Day

Panjab University’s faculty members, students and Vice-Chancellor RCSobti celebrated the Environment Day by cleaning the campus and planting about 700 saplings on the campus.The saplings were planted at the Children’s Park near the Faculty House, Rose Garden, Palm Garden and Herbal Garden on the PU premises this morning.

Two die of electrocution
Chandigarh, June 5
Two persons died of electrocution here today.In the first incident that occurred in Sector 20, 36-year-old Sukhwinder Singh, a resident of Kandla village, was electrocuted while repairing an electric pole. According to the police, JE Lakshveer Singh and assistant lineman Baleshwar Prasad told the victim that the power supply would be disrupted during the repair work.

Body yet to be identified

Even a day after an unidentified body was found near Poultry Farm Chowk, Phase 1, Industrial Area, the police is still groping in dark, as the body is yet to be identified.DSP (South) JS Khaira said the body was yet to be identified and reports pertaining to missing persons were being checked at all police stations.

Govt urged to clean polluted rivers
Mohali, June 5
Magsaysay awardee Dr Rajender Singh, who is known for his pioneering work in water management, today urged the Punjab government to take up the task of cleaning at least one of the polluted rivers in the state. He was speaking at a state-level function organised by the Punjab Pollution Control Board at NIPER here today.

‘Village uplift project’ launched
Chandigarh, June 5
Panjab University in collaboration with panchayats, community leaders and local bodies launched the “Village upliftment project” for providing vocational training to youth. As a part of the project, the department of life-long learning and extension has started the three-month course in computer education for the youth and school students at Govt Senior Secondary School in Khuda Lahora village.

12,000 cases disposed of
Chandigarh, June 5
A total of 12,700 cases, including civil, rent, labour, motor-accident claim cases and traffic challans, were disposed of at the quarterly lok adalat held here today.Nineteen benches were constituted to dispose of the cases and by evening around 1,765 cases were settled under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act.
