194 gram panchayats go to polls
Ambala, June 5 The second phase of election will be held on June 12. Siwach also held a meeting with the Deputy Commissioner and superintendent of police. Sarpanches and panches for 405 gram panchayat will be elected. In the first phase, 194 gram panchayats will go to polls. Sarpanches for Sullar village, Naniyola, Chota Badola , Dhanyori, Barsu Majra, Berkheri, Seewan Majra, Bhedsan, Segta, Allahpur, Channi, Haryoli, Langar, Malikpur, Panjato, Berpura, Sontli, Shahpur, Dhanora, Rampur, Fatehpur, Sehla, Aajanpur, Gelri and Khanpura have been elected unanimously. The Ambala administration has declared 70 villages sensitive and 59 hypersensitive. The police personnel have been deployed at 463 polling booths. EVMs will be used for the election, while ballet paper will be used for zila parishad elections. District election officer-cum-Deputy Commissioner Samir Pal Saro said around 2,547 employees and 11 duty magistrates had been deployed. — OC |

Water woes at railway colonies
Kalka, June 5 The team included senior divisional electrical engineer and senior divisional engineer (DEN), who also took a stock of the tubewell being installed at Majra Mehtab by the rail department to cope with the water scarcity problem. Subhash Chand Sharma, branch secretary NRMU Dhoolkot-Kalka-Shimla, said the DRM directed the electric officials concerned to install proper electric motors to make regular water supply in railway colonies. Senior Divisional Medical officer (DMO) Amabala Rakesh also visited the Broad Gauge Railway Colony, where a sewerage septic tank is in a deplorable condition and the sewerage line in the colony is also choked. Notably on June 2, hundreds of railway employees of the Northern Railway Mens’ Union (NRMU) had raised slogans against the higher officials of the railway department. In the form of a procession led by various union leaders they reached Kalka railway station and showed their resentment by raising slogans. They said since last couple of years, due to apathetic attitude of the department of Inspector of Works (IOW) residents of railway colonies were facing acute water shortage, but the department has not taken any steps to cope with the problem. Kalka MLA Pardeep Chaudhary condemned the state government over setting up of industrial units at Kalka. Talking to mediapersons he said during the last Assembly elections, Haryana CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda during his election campaign had falsely announced to set up industrial units at Kalka, Pinjore and its vicinity to lure voters. The ACC factory of Surajpur has already been closed down and HMT is on the verge of closure. The closure of Surajpur ACC factory has brought hundreds of employees on the roads. |

Stray dogs kill 49 sheep
Ambala, June 5 Around 12 sheep got injured. Owner of the sheep Som Nath said the wooden gate of the enclosure of the sheep was broken following the storm today. He said the stray dogs of the village entered in the enclosure and killed the sheep. He said he noticed the incident early in the morning when he went to open the gate of the enclosure. A team of veterinary doctors have reached the village and took the blood samples of the sheep. The owner of the sheep had demanded compensation. |

Patiala, June 5 Winning the toss and electing to bat first, BECC batsmen managed to score a reasonable total of 176 runs for eight wickets in allotted 35 overs. Jashan 39, Sanamver Grewal 33 and Dhruv Verma 21 were the main scorers for Patiala. In reply, Delhi lads scored 165 for seven in the scheduled 35 overs. Fencing meet kicks off
Patiala, June 5 The tournament is being organised by the Punjab Fencing Association under the chairmanship of Arun Kumar Vij, secretary general of the association. The event was inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor of the university Dr Jaspal Singh. Vij said around 21 teams were participating in the tournament. Dr Raj Kumar Sharma, director, sports department, welcomed the chief guest and other dignitaries. Patiala, June 5 Rohtak won the toss and elected to field first. Multipurpose managed to score 155 in 20 overs. Anmolpreet Singh (62) was the highest scorer for the team. He was well supported by Sagar Kumar (43) runs and Suhkwinder 17 runs. Aman Ahalawat was the pick of the bowlers for Rohtak. He claimed three wickets for 30 runs in four overs. He was supported by Ashish Sihag, who took one wicket for 23 runs. In reply, RCA, Rohtak, scored 104 runs after loosing five wickets in 20 overs. Aman Ahalawat scored 25 runs. He was supported by Rohan Sadhwani (24 not out) and Taj Mohammad (17) runs. Amrit Rawat claimed two wickets for 19 runs in four overs. Couple booked for murder
Mohali, June 5 On the basis of investigation done by the crime branch, the police has booked Vijay Kumar, his wife Anu and mother Sheela Devi. Initially when the boy had died on March 2, 2008, the police had initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC as father of the victim had not cast any doubt. However, later, the father alleged that the suspects had mixed some poisonous substance in liquor served to the victim. The police investigated the matter after the victim’s father went to the Punjab Human Rights Commission. A case under Sections 302 and 34 of the IPC has been registered at phase XI police station. Woman dies in road mishap
A woman occupant of a car died after the car in which she was travelling was hit by a speeding Swift car near the Mandi Board society traffic lights in Sector 67 here last evening. The victim, a resident of BSNL Society, Sector 50, Chandigarh, was coming from Fatehgarh Sahib, when the accident took place. The police has registered a case against the erring car driver Harpreet Singh, a resident of Sector 71. |

Patiala clinch U-22 cricket title
Mohali, June 5 The Patiala team pocketed the first prize of Rs 75,000, while Ludhiana got Rs 35,000 as the second prize. Both Mohit Mohindra (121 not out) and Amitoze Singh (123) knocked a brilliant ton on the last day of the final match. Patiala despite a huge lead of 620 runs refused to declare the innings on the final day of the play. Patiala started the day with their overnight score of 403 runs for five. The opening pair added a 72-run partnership before Vikramdit (36) was caught by wicket keeper Gitansh Khera off the bowling of Deepak Bansal. After his departure, Mohit Mohindra joined Amitoze Singh and they both started showing their skills with their bat leaving Ludhiana bowlers in the lurch. However, left arm spinner Jashan Sidhu grabbed wicket of Amitoze Singh, who hit 17 boundaries and a sky kisser six. Patiala batsmen continued to knock the ball well and gave no chance to the Ludhiana bowlers for settling down. Robin Dhillon (27 off 45) made 53-run partnership for eighth wicket with Mohit Mohindra. Mohit continued his impressive innings and scored 121 off 229 balls, which included eight boundaries and a six. The Patiala team was able to put up a huge total of 715 on the scoreboard. The Patiala innings ended at a huge score of 715. At the end of the day, the umpires declared Patiala as the winner on the basis of the first innings lead of 225 runs. From Ludhiana team, left arm spinner Jashan Sidhu came up with the highest wicket taker with seven wickets. Ludhiana team felt the absence of their medium pacer Baltej Singh.
