Robbers decamp with cash, jewellery

Ambala, June 1
Panic gripped Model Town in Ambala City, after armed robbers entered the house of a senior executive of a pharmaceutical company and made away with jewellery worth lakhs of rupees, cash and mobile phones.

Owner of the house Kailash Bhatia alleged that around 2.30 am eight persons wearing masks entered the house by breaking a window.

Kailash said the accused, who had iron roads, knives and a pistol with them, gagged him and his wife and asked their son to handover jewellery and cash to them.

When the couple tried to resist, the robbers attacked them. The assailants made away with Rs 30,000 in cash and gold jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh.

Before leaving, they threatened Kailash and his family of dire consequences if they reported the matter to the police. After they left, Kailsh raised an alarm and informed the police.

The police reached the spot, along with a dog squad and an FSL team. Last year, too, armed robbers had struck at a showroom in Ambala City and decamped with jewellery worth Rs 1 crore.

2 held for smuggling liquor

Rajpura, June 1
The police today arrested two persons with 700 boxes of liquor being smuggled to Haryana from Chandigarh. The accused have been identified as Arik Masih and Madan Lal, both residents of Sirsa. They admitted smuggling liquor from Chandigarh to Haryana where liquor was to be distributed among voters during the panchayat elections in Haryana.

DSP Manmohan Sharma said special nakas were being laid to curb the menace from Chandigarh to parts of Haryana during elections.

Rajpura city SHO Bikramjeet Singh Brar said a special naka was laid near Shamdu village where a truck was frisked on a tip-off. Both the accused have been arrested and efforts were on to trace the liquor vend contractor who sold the liquor to smugglers, he added. — TNS

Murder Case
Video conferencing in court

Ambala, June 1
The hearing in Ram Chander Chaterpati murder case was conducted through video conferencing in the court of A S Narang, special CBI judge, Haryana, here today.

Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is an accused of 120B (conspiracy) in the case. The defense counsel cross-examined Ari Daman, younger son of deceased Ram Chander Chatarpati, who is the prime witness of prosecution in the case.

Besides, other accused the CBI counsel HPS Verma and defense counsel S K Garg Narvana were also present.

Snatcher nabbed

Chandigarh, June 1
The police today arrested a Mohali resident who allegedly was a habitual snatcher of articles from people in the jungle of Darua village. The Industrial Area polcie station has constituted a special jungle beat after the double murder of two security guards.

The SHO of the Industrial Area police station, Inspector Dilsher Singh, said a police team was on a look out for a motorcyclist, who was involved in several incidents of snatchings and robbery in the jungle. He said the police had thoroughly searched the jungle area and had made it free from anti-social elements after the double murder incident.

it was during the special patrolling that the policemen came to know about the activities of the suspect.

A police team spotted the suspect riding a hero Honda motorcycle (PB 65 H 1709) and apprehended him after chasing him in the jungle. The suspect has been identified as 38-year-old Darshan Singh, resident of Saini Majra village.

Darshan told the police that he had snatched a mobile phone and money from a labourer on May 17.

The SHO said though the accused admitted to have committed several snatchings and robberies in the city, but not all incidents were reported to the police. He would be produced before a local court tomorrow. — TNS

Sumit secures berth in quarterfinals

Fourth seed Sabrina Gill shown the doors to Priya Singh of Rajasthan by beating her 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 in the girls’ under-16 category in the AITA Talent Series Tennis Tournament at the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association courts, Sector 10, here today.

The other player, Aastha Malhotra won three setter 4-2, 2-4, 4-1 against Mehakdeep Kaur in the same age group.

In the boys’ under-16 singles category, Sumit Pal Singh upset second seed Nirbhay Singh Soin in straight sets 6-1, 6-4 to secure his place in the quarterfinals. All quarterfinal matches will begin from 8 am at the CLTA courts.
