Replacement boon for arthritis patients: Dr Gupta
Dehradun, May 21 Indeed replacement of joints is becoming a reality and will become an accepted norm as adults go on to live well into their 80s and 90s. Even government hospitals are undertaking these procedures. The Orthopaedic Department at the Doon Hospital is also conducting hip and knee replacement operations successfully. “When medicines, exercise and other methods are unable to give relief to patients, joint replacement is an option that is suggested to patients, but we also tell them that these are implants that will help them only if they exercise and keep themselves active. What nature had given cannot be produced, but the implants help in getting rid of pain,” said Dr SK Gupta, ortho surgeon, who has been conducting these operations for the past four years. Age-related ailments like osteoporosis arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis damage hip joints, while rheumatism, joint fusion or ancylosing also occur in young patients. The head and cup of the femur is replaced with a metal and plastic implant that is fixed with cement in old patients. “All implants are imported and as such the cost of the procedure runs in lakhs in private establishments, but in government hospitals the patient is expected to get his implant and the surgical procedure is free. The implants can last up to 20 years, provided adequate exercise is undertaken,” said Dr Gupta, who had recently inserted implants in a 107-year-old patient. “The knee surgery is effective if undertaken in the early stages when the bone cartilage is less damaged,” said Dr Gupta. Besides knee joint replacement, high tibial osteotomy is also performed at the hospital that entails giving legs their normal shape. “In bow-leg deformity, corrective surgery is performed in order to give proper shape to the legs,” said Dr Gupta. Several patients coming for treatment have availed the Chief Ministers Relief Fund to bear the costs of the procedure. |
Industrial Package
Nainital, May 21 Claiming that the five parliamentarians from the state are working in close coordination with each other to get both the industrial package as well as a special package for the state, Baba said, “We (the state government and the parliamentarians) must come together on this issue.” The state has been witnessing a continuous trading of charges on the issue with the Nishank-led government blaming the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government at the Centre for withdrawing the package and the latter accusing the state government of not taking into confidence the five Lok Sabha members while approaching the Centre on the issue. The lid on the allegations being levelled by the BJP was blown when the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in a reply to a question raised by Baba on April 21 had stated that the state government had not approached it for any “financial package”. The PMO had stated that the state government had been approaching the Centre on issues related to the setting up of an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Rishikesh, an ayurveda university, public distribution system, transfer of funds and assets from Uttar Pradesh, implementation of the Sixth Pay Commission recommendations and construction of border roads. Meanwhile, while replying to another query regarding the preservation of forest cover in Uttarakhand and a letter written by the Minister of Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh to the state government in this regard, Baba said, “The Centre should involve experts from Uttarakhand before arriving at any decision regarding the state. There are qualified people in the state who have first-hand experience of ground realities. It will be beneficial if their expertise is sought before any policy is formulated regarding the state.” Talking about the issues pertaining to development, he said that there are several issues which are subjective and they need to be debated before any conclusion is arrived at. Baba has also advocated a hike in the development fund allocated to a Lok Sabha member. He said, “On one side, a Lok Sabha member like me has Rs 2 crore to disburse and, on the other, there are 14 legislators who represent Assembly constituencies from this parliamentary constituency who also have a similar amount at their disposal. Now how can a Member of Parliament match up to them.” |
