Gurgaon inc. loses Rs 200 crore to power cuts
Gurgaon, April 30 “We were expecting power cuts but not to this extent. There have been days when we got only 15 minutes of power in a day. The business has been affected a lot,” said one industrialist. “The industries are burning diesel worth Rs 4-6 crore every day to run their operations. The back-up costs a lot,” said another. According to GIA, the units had received only 90 hours of electricity supply in 23 days. “Udyog Vihar is not getting electricity supply for even three hours on an average every day as against the scheduled eight-hour supply from 9 am to 5 pm. Supply is disrupted due to frequency drops or load-shedding because all sub-station transformers are overloaded,” said GIA president Raj Singla. About 15,000 industrial units are located in Gurgaon, Manesar and nearby areas. The bigger industries like Hero Honda have their own power plants. It is the medium smaller enterprises in the readymade garments, telecom equipment, footwear, electrical and sports goods sectors that suffer the worst. “Their production levels have been curtailed... Their orders are being short-closed,” Singla added.

DU might have auctioned more radioactive material
New Delhi, April 30 The physics and chemistry departments, both of which have radioactive substance in their labs, had held some auctions recently to dispose of their “waste” to make more space for conducting classes as the university started more courses and admitted more students. “Both departments auctioned their goods and their records were later brought into the executive council meetings,” an EC member told The Tribune. He, however, said it could not be confirmed if those materials carried radioactive waste. He said auctions were organised hurriedly and the administration paid little heed to sorting materials to find if some of these could be dangerous. A chemistry teacher, Ramesh Chandra, had yesterday alleged that the physics department had dumped radioactive waste in a pit on the DU premises 20 years back. Three departments in the university— physics, chemistry and geology— are likely to have equipments in their laboratories with radioactive substances. Though there are clear Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) guidelines, university sources said not many teachers were trained in experimenting with machines that have high-level radioactive components like Cobalt 60. That it was flirting with danger apparently never occurred to the administration becomes apparent as it did not even consult its inhouse experts for disposal of its radioactive waste. Teachers of DU’s geology department, which is doing the only research of its type in north India in nuclear waste, said they were never approached by the university regarding the disposal of Gamma Irradiator. “Machines that are even functioning well in our laboratories are supposed to go through clearance from the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) regarding the amount of radioactive radiations they are releasing, so that people dealing with it are safe,” said a professor from the department, but sources confirmed that no such procedure was being followed. A chemistry department teacher, Vinay Kumar Singh, said rules were being flouted in the university under the supervision of vice-chancellor. It is all the more shocking as Pental comes from science background, he said. In fact, BK Sharma, who had purchased the irradiator from Canada in 1968, was the only chemistry teacher trained to deal with radioactive substance. He was too ill to talk, a family member told The Tribune. “This is a case of misgovernance and not ignorance,” said Aditya Narayan Mishra, president, DU Teachers Association (DUTA). The teachers also alleged that the enquiry committee formulated by the vice-chancellor Deepak Pental was a mere formality as the members of the committee had personal relations with Pental and the head of chemistry department VS Parmar. “One of the members of the three-member committee, BS Dwarkanath has conducted many joint researches with Parmar. This enquiry would not be fair,” said Sanjay Chaudhary, vice-president, DUTA. Meanwhile, after accepting the responsibility for the wrong disposal of radioactive irradiator, DU is making efforts to stop the flow of any information. Sources said some department teachers have been warned against talking to the media. Guards could be seen at the university science laboratories to check credentials of all visitors, apparently in an effort to stop mediapersons. DU offers Rs 8 lakh relief Delhi University has offered a compensation of Rs 8 lakh to the family of Rajendra Prasad, who died due to Cobalt 60 radiation exposure, and job to his widow. A statement issued by DU registrar stated this. Besides, DU would release a sum to Rs 2 lakh each for the family of five other victims admitted to various hospitals. The police has held the university responsible for the radiation as it sold radio-active substance in an auction, flouting all rules. |
Two held for cheating investors of Rs 100 crore
New Delhi, April 30 According to the police, the company had cheated more than 2,000 investors from across India to the tune of about Rs 100 crore. Seven luxury cars, including a Honda Accord, Honda City, three
Indica, one Santro and one Maruti Swift, acquired by the accused by fraudulent means have been seized from them. The accused have been identified as Manmohan Singh (42) and Akansha Sharma (26). “The duo was arrested yesterday from a house in D-Block of Kanishka Apartments, Shalimar
Bagh,” said Neeraj Thakur, additional CP (crime). According to the police, the accused issued advertisements in various national dailies in the name of Metro Cruise Ltd, asking owners of luxury cars to attach their cars with his car rental agency in lieu of good money. “The company was owned by Manmohan Singh. Reading the advertisement, a number of people, who wanted some extra money to earn their livelihood, purchased cars on bank loans and attached them to Singh’s agency. However, after a month or so, Manmohan Singh disappeared from the scene and all the vehicles attached to the agency also disappeared,” said
Thakur. The accused also induced a large number of people to invest money in their company. The investors were asked to invest Rs 1,05,000 and were promised returns at the rate of 48 per cent per annum. According to their scheme, if an investor would invest Rs 1.30 lakh, he would get Rs 4,000 interest and Rs 3,000 from his capital amount on a monthly basis. Besides Rs, 50,000 would be given as bonus after five years. Here too, the company and owners went missing after taking money from thousands of people. Manmohan Singh hails from Kota in
Rajasthan. After running away with people’s money, he purchased flats and cars. |

Rs 15 lakh drawn from account fraudulently
Noida, April 30 The two bank employees have been charged with carelessness. The Sector 20 police is investigating the fraud which took place in HDFC Bank, Sector 18, Noida, where retired Indian Air Force official Krishanpal Manchanda of Sector 44 had an account. When Manchanda checked his account on April 16, he was shocked to find Rs 4,000 only. He was expecting Rs 16.64 lakh in his account. Manchanda lodged a complaint with branch officer Shiv Ram Krishnan, Chetna Arora and bank manager Sumit Mittal. Noting their evasive response, he reported the matter to the police. He told the police that in February, he had notified the bank about the change in his address. On March 18, the bank had even issued a cheque book to him on his South Delhi address. As per the rules, a new cheque book is issued only after the expiry of the previous one. When the police questioned the bank officials about the fraud, they failed to trace the cheat. The police then registered a complaint against Shiv Ram Krishnan and Chetna Arora. The police learnt that some one had withdrawn Rs 15.5 lakh from Manchanda’s account in three transactions by forging his signature. The police said the cheat had used a fictitious I-card, PAN card and voter I-card to make the transactions. Sector 20 SHO said that bank officials might be involved in the fraud. |

Cops seek STF help in cracking loot cases
Greater Noida, April 30 Therefore, the police has decided to take help of the special task force (STF) in cracking the loot cases. Circle officer Shailendar Singh said the police has tried to solve the loot cases, but could not trace the gangs involved. So help was being sought from the STF. On March 2, bikers had looted Rs 34 lakh at gunpoint from a petrol pump opposite the State Bank of India branch in Knowledge Park. Two months have passed and the police is yet to crack this loot. While on January 17, the area reported the biggest ATM loot in Delhi and NCR as some unidentified men uprooted and fled with an ATM of ICICI Bank in Alfa Commercial belt. The ATM contained Rs 33 lakh. But even after four months, the police has not been able to solve the mystery behind this loot. It has not been even able trace the gang behind the incident. On December 31, 2009, some miscreants had reportedly tried to loot the same ATM. They had even attacked the security guard stationed outside the ATM booth as he resisted them. Even this incident has not been solved, though the police had collected many proofs from the crime scene. The fingerprints of the miscreants had been lifted and the security guard had provided details about their appearance. Besides, other criminal incidents have taken place in the city. All this has sullied the image of the police, as it has failed to solve the crimes yet. |
