2 African students impaled in mishap
New Delhi, April 19 The incident took place in C.R. Park near GK-II around 2 am. The victims have been identified as Ouattara Adam (22) and Cheick (21). Two iron rods pierced the chest and stomach of Adam, while Chick suffered injuries on the leg. The duo was returning from a party in Sarita Vihar. Adam was driving the car. They had dropped three friends at Nehru Place and were headed towards Indira Gandhi International Airport to board a flight for Ivory Coast when the accident took place near Savitri Cinema flyover. “The impact of the crash was such that two iron rods, protruding from the back of the truck, pierced the chest and stomach of Adam,” a senior police official said. One of the rods also pierced Chick’s right thigh,
resulting in multiple fractures. The official said it appeared that the truck driver suddenly applied brakes and Adam drove straight into the iron rods. The truck driver fled the spot soon after the accident. The victims were trapped inside the car which was towed away to the AIIMS Trauma Centre. “The duo was in a critical condition and needed
immediate medical attention. So we towed away the car straight to the AIIMS. After reaching the hospital, firemen cut the roof of the car. Later, a team of doctors took the victims for surgery,” the official added. Doctors said Adam was struggling for his life, while Chick was out of danger. It rains, but too brief to provide relief
Quick tips
New Delhi, April 19 “The maximum temperature settled at 42.1 degrees today. Although there were reports of mild precipitation and even hailstorm in some areas, the heat conditions haven’t been affected,” said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official. “While the minimum temperature today morning was recorded at 29.5 degrees Celsius, eight degrees above average, the humidity was in the range of 49-24 percent”, the official added. There were light showers in several parts of the capital from around 4 pm, bringing down the temperature. After the mild hailstorm and showers which were reported mostly in central Delhi, humidity levels, rose adding to the woes of residents already trying to cope with the stifling hot weather. Rain was also seen in parts of Noida and Ghaziabad. The Met office attributed the rains to a western disturbance over the region. The prediction for tomorrow said that the maximum will hover around 42 degree Celsius while the minimum will be around 27 degrees. “The slight showers all of a sudden, send a sudden heat wave. As soon as the water touched the burning ground, it evaporated. Within half and hour, no one could even tell if it rained. Even though it was hot today, we got a breather from the deadly sun,” said Ashok, a city resident. “When I stepped out, the heat was awful and the weather was sticky. It would need more than some minutes of rain to bring relief to Delhi now; the weather has been horrible over the weekend. After the rain, dust is still in the air and the weather is very uncomfortable now,” said Namrata who works at the ITO. |
Diseases rise as temp soars
New Delhi, April 19 “Cases of heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and dehydration have increased much more this timer compared to last year. People often quench their thirst from roadside juicewalas and water stalls which are also a source for the water-borne diseases. Nausea, vomiting, upset stomach are some of the fallouts. Severe infection may also lead to a sever form of diarrhea or gastric flu,” said Dr SM Raheja of GB Pant Hospital. He said almost half of these patients coming to him are those who developed sickness after having an ice cream, pastries or any other junk food from outside. “During this season, bacteria multiply extremely fast, and germs, flies and dust add to the problem,” the doctor explained and advising that stale, roadside, spicy and uncovered food should be avoided. “Young girls have been dropping in with skin related queries ever since the temperatures went up. Apart from sun burns, increase in acne, skin dullness, skin darkening also worries them,” said Skin Specialist Dr Siddhwartha Choudhary in Chitranjan Park. “To avoid skin and hair problems, sun exposure especially from 10 am to 4 pm should be avoided when the sun is at its hottest. But if you have to be outdoors, make sure to find shade. Protect yourself with brimmed hats that cover your neck, ears, eyes, and scalp; sunglasses with UV protection; and loose-fitting, tightly woven clothing that cover your arms and legs,” he added. Gynaecologist Archana Shrarma of Fortis Hospital has been receiving almost five to six cases of urinary tract infection and abdominal pain almost every day ever since the temperature started soaring this April. “It’s all because of less intake of water,” Dr Sharma said, adding burning sensation, painful urination and fever are definite signs of urinary tract infection. |
Delhi govt defends discoms on power cuts
New Delhi, April 19 Power secretary Rajender Kumar said Delhi had arrangements for more than the required power and attributed the recent loadshedding to 'low frequency relay' which is due to overdrawing of electricity by other states from the grid. "The northern states, other than Delhi, have been over-drawing electricity from the grid. This creates an impact on the power situation of the Capital. The overdrawing lowers the frequency which results in loadshedding in Delhi," said Kumar. On the issue of discoms selling electricity to other states, Kumar said if companies stop selling electricity, they will have to increase the tariff. "They are selling within the permissible limit. They cannot be stopped, else tariff would go up," said Kumar. However, the power secretary maintained that Delhi had more than sufficient power. "The power cuts do not mean that we are unable to procure enough power. It is the problem of low frequency and can be dealt only by the Central government. We would ask the government to direct other states on this issue," said the minister. According to him, the problem of low frequency is generally faced in July, but this time it has occurred in advance because of the increasing power demand due to early arrival of summer. "The power consumption has automatically gone up due to temperatures going above normal in April itself. Also, there are no pre-monsoon rainfalls," he said. Commenting on the possibility of a similar power problem erupting during the Commonwealth Games in October, Kumar assured that the government was fully prepared to deal with the situation. "The Games are in October and the power demand during this period is lower as compared to the peak summer months," he said. The maximum power demand today was 3,940MW. The power demand in April this year is 20 per cent higher than the previous year and is expected to increase further. Delhi' internal generating capacity is only between 1100MW to 1200MW and to meet the shortfall, the Capital has to rely on external sources like central sector generating units and bilateral arrangements. |
Doc held for buying cars with fake drafts
New Delhi, April 19 According to the police, two luxury cars —Tata Safari and Honda City— purchased by the doctor on fake demand drafts have been recovered while a Mahindra Scorpio is yet to be recovered. According to H.G.S. Dhaliwal, DCP (south), the accused, Varun Kaul, was arrested from outside his residence in Gurgaon following a complaint by officials of Auto Link Automobiles, an automobile showroom, in Hauz Khas. Kaul had allegedly purchased a Tata Safari from Auto Link Automobiles on April 3 for Rs 9.83 lakh in the name of one Naresh Sharma. “When the company executive went to deliver the car at the Green Park Extension address mentioned by Kaul, two persons came out and said that lane in front of their house was very congested and so the executive should deliver the car to them on the road itself. The executive did the same and took a demand draft from the two men. However, when the draft was deposited in the bank, it was found to be forged,” Dhaliwal said, adding that some similar cases were reported from the NCR and the police found that in all cases, the fake demand draft was made in the name of Bank of India’s Faridabad branch. According to Dhaliwal, Kaul has disclosed that the seized Honda City car was purchased by him from Prestige Honda, a showroom in Chandigarh Industrial Area Phase-I on the basis of a fake demand draft. It is not the first time when Kaul has been arrested for cheating. He along with his father was arrested in September 2008 by the Mumbai police for allegedly duping jewellers by taking away ornaments worth several lakhs by furnishing fake demand drafts. Kaul did his MBBS from a Mumbai college in 2005 and later enrolled for higher studies in the All India Institute of Alternate Medicine, but left studies in 2006. He started practicing in Jalandhar, but later shifted to Gurgaon. In 2008, when HUDA stopped all commercial activities in residential areas, his clinic was sealed. |
Filthy SMS sender in judicial custody
New Delhi, April 19 Metropolitan magistrate Rachna Tiwari Lakhanpal sent Narender Khosla, 27, a manpower supplier, who allegedly procured SIM cards in someone else's name for the offence to Tihar jail for 11 days. Delhi police's Special Cell, which arrested Khosla on April 16 was brought before the court after his police remand ended today. His custodial interrogation was sought on the grounds that he is to be taken to Amritsar, the place he hailed from, for recovery of the SIM cards allegedly used by him. Khosla's counsel, on the other hand, opposed the police plea, stating that sending text messages on mobile phones was not that serious an offence to remand him to police custody. According to the police, the accused used documents of a gym instructor Manick Verma to procure the SIM cards and sent text messages with an aim to cause trouble to the latter with whom he had a personal rivalry. Khosla was allegedly angry with Verma for having an affair with a woman in whom he also was also interested. It is alleged that Khosla had sent threatening SMSes to Tharoor and MPs Brinda Karat, Mehmood Masood Madani, Rashid Alvi, Om Prakash and Sandeep Dikshit. A total of five cases have been registered against him in different police stations in the capital. |

SHO asked to verify Geelani’s record
New Delhi, April 19 The orders came from the court of additional sessions judge, Nivedita Anil Sharma, after Geelani appeared in the court to fill the bail bond of one Mirza Iftikhar, an accused in a case of attempt to commit culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Iftikhar was also an accused in the 1996 Lajpat Nagar blasts case, but was acquitted recently. Geelani, who hails from Srinagar, signed a bail bond of Rs 15,000 for Iftikhar, saying that he knew him as they both belonged to the same city. While Geelani was signing the bail bond in the court room, the judge confirmed from Vinod Kumar Sharma, the additional public prosecutor, if there was any case pending against him. To this, Geelani replied that he was listed as an accused in Parliament attack case, but had been acquitted by the Supreme Court. However, the court directed the SHO to verify his records and file a reply on April 20. On April 15, 2008, Iftikhar, while in prison, injured a co-prisoner, Satendra, during a verbal duel. A case under Section 308 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against him. Geelani was sentenced to death by a special POTA court on charges of conspiring for the 2001 Parliament attack. Don’t oppose beggars’ arrest, Govt to temples
New Delhi, April 19 He said the request was being made as the order might offend religious people, who think giving alms to beggars was a charity. Officials will keep an eye on all religious places and nab the beggars. The officials will work in teams and each team will have six officers and a magistrate. The beggars will be kept in beggar homes where they will be trained in jobs like painting, shoe-mending, tailoring etc. They will be provided free-of-cost food, beds, clothes and other facilities till they are fully trained. This is being done keeping in view of the upcoming Commonwealth Games. The social welfare department is concentrating on religious places because since the launch of the drive, the beggars have abandoned traffic lights and roundabouts, where they earlier used to sit. The government is also focusing on the Jama Masjid locality, though evicting beggars from there has not been possible so far because the beggars hide in the narrow lanes of the populous Walled city. As the government teams do not have local people, they do not go in the congested areas to nab them. |
