Then, the institute started a campaign for collecting newspaper waste from the city and other places to arrange funds.

The assistance of Rs 2.71 lakh includes Rs 1 lakh contributed by the institute as per the announcement it had made. The rest of the amount was collected by selling about 28,500 kg of newspaper waste collected from Bathinda and around.

Talking to the TNS here today, director of the institute Ashok Sadiora said the institute volunteers had collected the newspapers waste from Bathinda, Mansa, Maur, Malout, Nathana, Bhagta, Sardoolgarh etc. He said the assistance, a token of love, would be distributed equally among the 22 players. He added that though the amount was meagre for country’s top hockey players, the feelings behind the noble cause were pious.

Rajay Deep/Tribune News Service

Bathinda, April 7
After creating a high-voltage drama, a clerk of the Bathinda Development Authority (BDA) jumped from the third floor of the BDA complex, here today. Sustaining multiple injuries, the clerk was later booked for attempting to commit suicide.

The drama started in the morning, when one clerk Chuhar Singh Laddi entered the office and threatened to commit suicide if all his demands were not accepted by the senior officials.

When the staff ignored the threat, he went to the office of an SDO situated on the third floor. Finding it vacant, he bolted the door from inside.

Witnessing him closing the door, someone from the staff informed others, who urged him to open the door and come out.

Meanwhile, chief administrator, BDA, Ravi Bhagat also reached the spot and observed him to be in an inebriated condition. Other officials present there informed that they had witnessed him having liquor inside the office.

Exhausted in their attempt, senior officials called up the police, that negotiated with him. The clerk got irritated and stepped out of a window pane and dangled dangerously.

Immediately, BDA officials called up the fire brigade to send a fire tender, ladder along with well-trained staff.

Witnessing him hanging from a height, firemen opened up a ladder and urged him to come down. Despite repeated pleadings, they failed in their attempt and he jumped off.

Immediately after he fell on the ground, the firemen rushed him to Civil Hospital and admitted him to the emergency ward.

His attendants informed that he had been accusing an official of the BDA of having personal enmity with him. He accused the officials of creating hurdles in releasing in his monthly salary. Further, he charged the authorities with transferring his colleague to Amritsar just to satisfy the ego of one official.

When contacted, chief administrator, BDA, Ravi Bhagat refuted his allegations and said, “He had taken a major loan from a bank, where he had his salary account. We had released his salary but he was apprehensive of getting the amount from the bank as he had not repaid the loan installment for the past 10 months.”

“He was among those staff, who not only shirk work but are also immoral. One of them was transferred due to which he was feeling upset,” said Ravi Bhagat.

1984 riots
US federal district court summons Kamal Nath
Kulwinder Sandhu
Tribune News Service

Moga, April 7
Union Minister Kamal Nath has been summoned by a US federal district court for his alleged role in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Two victims of the riots, presently settled in the US, Jasbir Singh and Mahinder Singh, have filed a lawsuit against the minister through Sikhs for Justice, a US-based human rights advocacy group in the district court of New York on Tuesday.

Talking to The Tribune on telephone, Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, legal advisor of the Sikhs for Justice revealed that the civil case has been filed against him under the Alien Torts Claims Act and the Torture Victim Protection Act.

“The petitioners have sought compensatory and punitive damages for several allegations including crimes against humanity, degrading treatment and wrongful killing,” he said.

Kamal Nath, who is incidentally on an official visit to New York these days, has been served the notice by the court officials in the Indian Consulate Centre, today.

As per the summon orders issued by the court clerk, J. Michael M Mahon (a copy of which is available with The Tribune), the minister has been asked to respond within 21 days, failing which, the court has stated, ‘if you fail to respond, judgement by default would be entered against you for the relief demanded in the complaint’.

Sikhs for Justice along with All India Sikh Students' Federation has long been alleging that Kamal Nath was also involved in the anti-Sikh riots.

They allege that on November 1, 1984 he was a member of Parliament and was seen by many Sikh people leading an armed mob, in which, many of Sikhs were burnt alive during an attack on a gurudwara in New Delhi.

Pannun said that the case has been filed against the minister because of the failure of the Indian government to enforce human rights protections and hold the violators accountable for their acts.

Adding that the US law provides a remedy to victims of human rights violations that have been committed abroad and allows the victims to bring a lawsuit against the perpetrator in the US Federal District Court, Pannun said despite several witnesses who saw Kamal Nath inciting and leading the mob, Nath has been successfully escaping justice under the Indian justice system for more than 25 years using his influence and position in the ruling Congress party.

Meanwhile, he has announced that Sikhs would hold a ‘Justice Rally’ against Nath’s US visit at 49th street and VI Avenue (in front of the McGraw Hill Building) where Kamal Nath has planned to preside over a gathering of the US-India Business Council in New York on Thursday.

Pannun further said that Jasbir Singh lost 24 members of his family and Mahinder Singh, who was just two-years-old then, lost his father in the riots.

On the other hand, Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad president of the AISSF who held a demonstration outside the Karkarnuma court in New Delhi today while talking to The Tribune said that Sikhs, particularly the victims, had waited for more than 25 years to get justice but the Indian system of Justice has so far failed to give relief and justice.

“We have been forced to adopt all possible measures to get justice and soon we will also be approaching the international court of justice against the Indian government for failing to protect the life and liberty of the minority communities,” he said.

Udyan Abha Toofan Express
AC coach for train yet to be provided
Our Correspondent

Abohar, April 7
Even when 20 sitting and former members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha had joined Virendra Kataria, ex-president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC), in urging the railway minister Mamta Banerjee to provide additional AC coach for the 3007/3008 Udyan Abha Toofan Express, nothing has so far been done.

While releasing the copy of the memorandum submitted to SS Khurana, chairman of the Railway Board on February 22, former MP Kataria said today that the waiting list for the AC three-tier was getting longer now due to summer and the MPs find it difficult to visit the Malwa region besides West Rajasthan.

Khurana, in consultation with ED (Coaching) Mukesh Nigam had directed that the outlived AC chair car coaches in the Sriganganagar-Delhi, Bathinda-Delhi and Sriganganagar-Haridwar intercity trains be replaced by brand new coaches. Earlier, one new coach was provided but withdrawn later. This was strongly resented by Kataria and Meghwal. Now, all the three trains have been equipped with new AC chair car coaches, Kataria confirmed.

Speaking about the recently sanctioned Sarai Rohila-Sriganganagar superfast train, Kataria said tentatively the rakes of the new train would leave Sriganganagar and Sarai Rohila at 10 pm. This would facilitate the passengers who avoid travelling by 3007/3008 Udyan Abha Toofan Express that normally runs late by 5-6 hours and its rake too is poorly maintained. The date for flagging off is yet to be finalised.
