Watchman murdered

Durga Prasad (55), a watchman with the Railways, was found murdered at his house under the Jagraon bridge here this morning.
The body was found lying on the bed by neighbours, who informed the police. A police party rushed to the spot with a sniffer dog and interrogated the
neighbours.
A life dedicated to girls’ education

Prof Harwinder Kaur, who recently retired as in charge of the girls wing and the head of the postgraduate department of Punjabi at GNN College here, had dedicated her entire 34 years of service to the cause of the deprived rural lot, especially girls, who would otherwise have been deprived of the three ‘Rs’ and thinking of becoming self-reliant.

After a multitude of serious irregularities and frauds in the allotment and transfer of plots, followed by the City Centre scam, a senior official of the LIT is under shadow for the registration of a title deed for a 400 sq yard plot at the posh Rajguru
Nagar, valued at over Rs 1 crore, on the basis of fabricated documents, and without the mandatory approval of the LIT chairman.

Phagwara youth among 18 in Sharjah jail

In another shocking incident, after the reports of a Goraya-based youth Sachin Sharma of Mahalan village, lodged in a United Arab Emirates (UAE) jail, now another youth of this town is reportedly languishing in a Sharjah jail along with at least 18 Indians on the charges of murdering a Pakistani citizen.
Liquor vend pulled down

A liquor vend opposite Guru Gobind Singh tower at Dholewal chowk here was removed by the tehbazari wing of the municipal corporation here today.
The vend had been constructed illegally in the green belt four or five years back. Zone C superintendent Rajiv Bhardwaj said they could not get it vacated as the owner had filed a case in the local courts.

Printers’ panel to strike work on April 10

Members of the Offset Printers’ Association have decided to go on strike on April 10 in protest against the steep hike in prices of kraft paper and paperboard.
Paper mills; have without any prior information, the rates. As a result the packaging industry is facing an awkward situation as the orders for the supply of corrugated and duplex boxes are booked at least three-four month in advance.

Wheat procurement gets under way

2 commission agents booked for fraud

The police today booked two commission agent for committing fraud with a farmer.
On April 19, 2008, Manjinder Singh of Chak Bhaika village, near here, had complained to the SSP
(Ludhiana rural) against two commission agents — Kewal Krishan and Paramjit Singh — of M/s Kissan Trading Company at the local grain market, accusing them of embezzling Rs 5.5 lakh due to him.
