Lumb propels Royals to easy win
Jaipur, April 7 Chasing a modest total of 153, Rajasthan Royals won the match with five overs to spare, thanks to a brilliant opening stand of 109 in 9.3 overs between Lumb and Naman Ojha. Lumb hammered 16 fours and two sixes in his maiden IPL fifty while for a change Ojha played the role of a sheet anchor today. Their job was made easier by ordinary bowling and terrible fielding by Punjab side. After Lumb’s departure, Ojha paired up with Yusuf Pathan to take his team to an easy win. Ojha remained unbeaten at 44 while Yusuf scored 21 not out. Among the Punjab bowlers, Sreesanth proved the most expensive, giving away 40 runs in his 3 overs. He also hogged the limelight once again for the wrong reasons today. The Kerala pacer may be rapped by the IPL as after conceding a no-ball and the free-hit going for a boundary, he lost his cool and clapped his hands sarcastically at the umpire. With this victory, Rajasthan Royals now has 12 points from 11 matches and with three matches to go a berth in semifinals now seems realistic for the inaugural IPL winners. The team is now placed third in the point’s tally. For Punjab, whatever little hope of their making it to the final four was left has been dashed today. Nothing went right for the team except for the toss. Earlier, opting to bat after winning the toss, Kings XI Punjab was restricted to 153 at the loss of six wickets by a disciplined bowling attack of Rajasthan Royals. The team got off to a good start and at one point (108-2 in 11.3 overs) the stage seemed set for a fighting total, but they lost the momentum midway after two deadly blows in the form of Mahela Jayawardene (44 runs) and Yuvraj Singh (28 runs) in the 12th over bowled by Rajasthan pacer Aditya Dole. The in-form duo added a quick fire 56 runs in 32 balls before departing in the same over which changed the complexion of the game. The team had high hopes from the last recognized pair of batsmen – Ravi Bopara and Irfan Pathan – but the former lost his wicket in a terrible mix-up after scoring a meagre 8 runs of 11 deliveries. Aussies lose to Italy in cliffhanger
Gurdaspur, April 7 When they reach the dressing room in the evening the Australians will surely ponder over the mistakes they committed which led to their 43-47 defeat against Italy. Sport is all about people and passion. Take out the passion and zeal people bring with them to sporting venues and sport will be rendered as hollow as an empty wine bottle. This was much in evidence at Government college stadium as the First Pearls World Cup Kabaddi bandwagon rolled into this non-descript town. In the first match played between Australia and Italy the limelight was on Italy’s Balwinder Singh who displayed immaculate raiding techniques and stopper Daljit Singh Lamber. Both these players were instrumental in beating their rivals 47-43. It was a cliff hanger of a contest and what did the Aussies in was their penchant to take too many risks when the need of the hour was to exercise restraint. In the end, as it turned out, the Australians flew too close to the sun and got their wings burnt while the Italians just basked in the glory of the sun picking up 2 points from the encounter. In the second match the hosts never had to strain a sinew as they demolished Iran 62-28. Sukhbir Singh Sarawan hogged the limelight and raided the rival territory 14 times and was successful in all his attempts. In the last match Canada downed UK 48-29. The caravan now rolls into the holy city of Amritsar tomorrow for the last phase of the league matches. The semi-finals will be played in Bathinda while the summit clash — an India-Pakistan is not being ruled out by the connoisseurs of the game — will take place in Ludhiana. |
Pargat yet to apply mind on kabaddi league
Jalandhar, April 7 Sukhbir announced setting up of IKL while addressing the gathering during the World Kabaddi Cup matches played at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium in Jalandhar on Monday, yet he did not elaborate how and when it would be set up. However, he said the next Kabaddi tournaments would be held in Punjab in winter and in foreign countries like Canada and United Kingdom in summer after setting up of the league. Later when asked, Pargat told The Tribune that he had not yet applied his mind on the issue as he was fully concentrating on making the first World Cup Kabaddi a big success. He added that he would think in detail about constituting the IKL only afterwards. Meanwhile, players from various teams participating in the first World Cup are of the view that summer is not the ideal season for holding the tournament. Talking to The Tribune, the USA captain Tirath Singh Gakhal said it would have been better if the World Cup had been held during winters. He added that the ground had become too hard due to scorching heat to put 100 per cent for the players. Pargat admitted the Kabaddi Cup should not have been organised in summer. At the same time, he said the tournament was being organised a bit late as elaborate arrangements were made for it. Further to a query, he said it would be kept in mind for the future that tournaments should be completed by Mid March. |
D-Day for Tiger Woods
Augusta, April 7 He last played in November in Australia but enjoyed a practice round Monday in Augusta. The 34-year-old, who remains atop world rankings, said at a press conference earlier in the week that he underwent 45 days of rehab and was continuing treatment. He refused to specify what exactly he was being treated for, despite widespread reports of treatment for sex addiction. He said that he was looking forward to Thursday's tee-off, where he has been paired in the penultimate group with KJ Choi of South Korea and Matt Kuchar. "I haven't looked forward to the tee-off like this for a long time," he said. "It feels like fun again, that's something I've been missing." Asked about his expectations for the tournament, he sounded almost like the Tiger Woods of old. "Nothing's changed," he said. "I want to go out there and win this thing." But Woods was adamant that he had changed his approach both to golf and the personal issues that sparked such an uproar. "I have made a conscious decision to try to tone down my negative outbursts and show my respect for the game," Woods said, adding that he would also show more appreciation for the fans, whom he admitted ignoring in recent years. "That was wrong of me," he said. Play begins Thursday at the Augusta National Golf Club with the final round on Sunday. —

Messi 4, Arsenal 1
Berlin, April 7 The night belonged Messi, who produced a sensational performance at the Camp Nou Tuesday. Level at 2-2 from the first leg, Nicklas Bendtner gave Arsenal a shock lead after 18 minutes but Messi bagged three goals in 21 first-half minutes and a fourth in the last few minutes to seal a 6-3 aggregate triumph. The first leg will be played in Milan on April 20, the second leg in Barcelona on April 28. "I am very happy," said modest Messi," very pleased indeed." He added that "the important thing is that we have won again, after the match started badly. Now we must continue to work hard in the same way." When asked if he will score four in "El Clasico" against Real Madrid Saturday, Messi replied: "I hope so, but that will be very difficult." Earlier in Moscow, Dutch forward Sneijder drilled home an early free-kick to ensure Inter's progress. CSKA's chances of scoring the three goals they needed to qualify ended when Chidi Odiah was dismissed four minutes into the second half after picking up a second yellow card for a rough tackle on Cameroon's Samuel Eto'o. —
