City rejoices in ‘the hour of darkness’
New Delhi, March 27 The awareness campaign went on a larger scale with several corporates and celebrities joining the cause. Last year, Delhi was the lead city for Earth Hour 2009, saving around 650 MW, more than half of the entire country’s power savings, and this year the figure is expected to go up. India accounted for saving 1000 MW as five million people in 56 Indian cities participated in the movement last year. “It is a small step and I don’t see why anyone should not participate in the campaign. It’s high time people contributed their bit to curb climate threats. We managed to get our hostel lights out after speaking to the warden and got together for a candlelight dinner in the lobby,” said Shruti, living in a private hostel in east Delhi. Several historical buildings, office complexes, Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs), shopping centres and hotels switched off lights this year. “Some people were not very pleased with the idea of switching off their television sets at prime time. But we managed to convince them promising them the episode of their daily soap on Youtube later. More than 80 households in our locality participated in the hour,” said Ashima, a resident of Dwarka. |
Golden Gulzar set to author two books
New Delhi, March 27 On being asked, “What you are working on currently?” He replies with a frown, “Yahan bhi filmein. Aaj kuch aur, filmein nai,” (Let’s talk something else other than movies) and then says, “I am working on two books, one a book on poems and the other a collection of short stories.” It’s the lunch hour at the festival and Sampooran Singh Kalra–Gulzar being his pen name— is queuing up at the buffet while speaking of the importance of a platform such as this festival in getting talent from across south Asian countries on a common platform. He says they need to hear what writers and poets from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Afghanistan and Pakistan and other countries feel and write about. “Cultural exchange never flows one way. It is a two-way street or more, so a give and take matters,” he says to underline the importance of the festival. Talks soon veer to how he is reinventing himself in the age of pop lyrics as many of his once-illustrious contemporaries have lost their relevance. He says technology has become important and most writers of the old school are stubborn. “In a time and age with 75 television channels, mobiles and the Internet, you can’t make a child sit with a book. The elder generation needs to adapt and learn from the young,” he says. The man who penned soulful melodies of Andhi in the 70s also wrote sensuous numbers of Omkara and it is obvious that he is the right man to judge both the eras. He says the gap between Indian cinema and art has reduced over the years and the exchange of ideas improved tremendously. “Song composers and music directors understand and respect the value of lyrics. Directors know it for a fact, no matter how big the budget is, a good script and a gripping screenplay are essential to a film,” he says, giving the thumbs-up to the mainstream cinema. |
60 jhuggis gutted
Faridabad, March 27 As soon as the news of fire outbreak reached the fire service department, the authorities swung into action and dispatched two firefighting engines to the spot. The residents of adjoining village Jharsetli also helped the firefighters in dousing the flames. It took about two hours to fully douse
the fire. The sub-divisional magistrate of Ballabgarh, Inderpal Bishnoi, has ordered an enquiry to find out the cause of the fire. According to some of the slum dwellers, the fire broke out in one of the jhuggis and soon spread to others. The wind velocity was high at the time of the incident and this helped the fire to spread faster. The majority of the adult inmates were at work when the incident took place. The ill-fated jhuggis belonged to migratory labourers and industry workers. The sector has a good number of industrial units. The slum area has more than 200 jhuggis. These jhuggis are built, partly on the land of Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) and partly on private land. This is the third time in as many years that fire has broken out in the slums in Sector 59. |
