Family of four consume poison
New Delhi, March 20 According to information, Pramod stayed in the Mahavir Nagar area on a rented accommodation with his wife and two children. His father and mother live at another place. "Last night, A N Sachdev had gone to meet Promod's family and found three of the family members in an unconscious condition. When he asked about the matter to Sonali, his daughter-in-law, she also fainted. He rushed them to the hospital and reported the matter to the police," added the police officer. According to the police, it was reported by the neighbours that the couple had been going through a financial crisis for some years and that could be the probable cause of the extreme step. "We did not recover any suicide note," confirmed a police official adding that the reason is being investigated. The police further stated that after giving poison to the children, Pramod and Sonali consumed the same poisonous substance. Further investigation is in progress while the postmortem report is awaited. |
CM disappoints
DTU students
New Delhi, March 20 Though the meeting was seen as a step towards resolving the crisis at DTU over change in its status from (DU) Delhi College of Engineering (DCE), a Delhi University-affiliated college to a state-level university, the students said their voices were not heard by the Chief Minister. “She refused to listen to us and instead kept telling that the government was funding the college and so can give it any status it wanted,” said Ravi Shekhar, president, DTU Students’ Association. The students said Dikshit threatened them that if they did not follow the academic schedule of the university, they would have to face dire consequences. “She conveyed to us that our demands did not matter to the government and that if students do not go back to their classes all of them could be expelled,” said Shekhar, who was expelled from the college along with another student for allegedly instigating students to protest the conversion. Even while the suspension of one teacher was revoked, DTU has not revoked the suspensions of the two students. The students have now decided to intensify agitation. “We would hold a meeting in the night to decide our future course of action,” Shekhar said, adding that the students were not going to give up . |

New Delhi, March 20 Special judge S.K. Sarwaria sent Dwivedi to judicial custody, after his police remand under the MCOCA ended today. Dwivedi is lodged in Tihar Jail. Gangsters trigger-happy
with Chinese guns
New Delhi, March 20 Cops were a little surprised when they recovered a slick 9 mm gun of Chinese make from Om Prakash, alias Bunty, the head of a biker gang, whom South Delhi police killed in an encounter in August 2008. Several gangsters have since been arrested with these Chinese guns. Narender Bhati, alias Ravan, a notorious criminal of NCR, who was nabbed in September last month, had one such gun. Another gangster Satish, wanted by police of several states and carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his head, was also found with one such Chinese killer. Sat Prakash, alias Satte, arrested after an encounter on January 19 in the Green Park market, had one as well. “We had recovered Chinese pistols not only from Satte, but also from another member of his gang who was arrested a few days later. More criminals than ever are carrying Chinese pistols,” said HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (South), who led a police team in an encounter against Bunty and received a bullet from his Chinese pistol in his bullet-proof jacket. A crime branch official says the Chinese guns are not only easily available but are also cheaper compared to Indian or British make. What is more, they are considered better than the 9 mm guns that the police carry as they make less noise and are more stable in hands while firing. Rough police estimates say every third criminal involved in heinous crimes in the Capital is found to have these pistols nowadays. “The pistols come to India from China via Nepal and cost anything between Rs 15,000 and Rs 20,000. They were once priced around Rs 40,000. The porous Indo-Nepal border and money transactions through hawala sources have made the supply of these weapons frequent and easy,” said the senior crime branch official. “These pistols are quite good during multiple firing,” Dhaliwal says. With these weapons in hands, criminals have become more emboldened and managed to keep cops at bay for hours in encounters. “Earlier, the countrymade pistol (katta) was the norm and it would fire one shot at one time and needed reloading. Now, criminals go on firing and are more accurate in firing. They have become more confident in facing the police now,” an SHO said. Factories in Bihar are also churning out these prohibited bores which are picked by even petty criminals. |
Noted Muslim citizens back quota Bill
New Delhi, March 20 They also condemned clerics for their criticism of the Bill. Bhartiya Muslim Mahila Andolan (BMMA) organised the event after a few Muslim groups opposed the Bill in its present form and demanded changes to provide quota to Muslims. Condemning the “pseudo religious assault” on the gender-friendly Bill, the state convener of BMMA termed the women’s reservation bill the first step towards equality and justice for women. “Some men claiming to be clerics have made statements in the media like ‘Allah sent women on earth to give birth to children and raise them to be doctors and engineers. They don’t know politics’. We just wish to tell them that they need not speak on our behalf. If the Bill is passed, Muslim women in the future will participate in politics and there will be no stopping them,” Shabnam Hashmi, who heads NGO ANHAD (Act Now for Harmony and Development), said. As Indian Muslims and secular-minded citizens, they are seriously concerned that these fascist and chauvinistic utterances have come to signify the voice of Muslim community, said the BMMA members through a signed statement. Javed Akhtar also made some strong statements against these groups and blamed them for misrepresenting the concerns of the community. “The Muslim Personal Board never woke up to the fact that out of the 52 Muslim countries, 50 do not permit divorce by the word of mouth. But Indian Muslim women are subjected to this ridiculous mode of annulment. Instead of focusing on the problems of Muslim women, they now oppose the reservation Bill and are trying to delay it. They aren’t looking after the interests of Muslim women but their own,” said an agitated Javed Akhtar. |
Gurgaon gets Haryana’s first evening court
Gurgaon, March 20 The evening court, which has been set up with a view to reducing the burden of cases in the regular courts, will function from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Such evening courts have been started in four districts—Gurgaon, Faridabad, Hisar and Karnal— on an experimental basis. If these succeed, such courts would be established in other districts of the state. Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Justice Sathashivam said piling up of cases in the regular courts was a cause of concern for all and by disposal of petty cases in the evening courts, the burden would be lessened. He maintained that the cases pertaining to traffic challans, Factories Act, Punjab Shops and Establishment Act and Motor Vehicle Act could be taken up at these evening courts. The apex court judge further pointed out that the evening courts would also be beneficial for those who could not spare time to appear in the court during the day. In his address, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court Mukul Mudgal observed that with the setting up of evening courts, the senior advocates would be able to concentrate on serious cases as they could send their juniors to the evening courts. He asserted that such courts had proved successful in Gujarat and assured the Bar members that no new subject would be added to the purview of the evening courts without their consent. |

Illegal parking worries traders
Noida, March 20 Its president Kidar Bansal said they have been requesting the Noida Authority about traders’ concern for the last 17 years, but of no avail. There is a chaos in Sector-18 market due to unauthorised parking. The situation may cause serious consequences leading to terrorist activities in this busy market, Baansal said. Multi-row parking is encroaching on the roads, which hinders the flow of vehicular movements. One cannot get out from the Metro station as the entrance and exit from station are blocked with vehicles parked illegally in Savitri market. The situation is the same in B-Block (in front of Punjab National Bank). Noida Authority and UPPCL have to take effective measures to improve the situation within their jurisdictions, Bansal said. As regards the multi-storeyed parking, the traders’ association has stressed that the existing parking plot which is well located, be developed into multi-storeyed underground parking. The association has also stressed that roads should be widened and central verge needs to be constructed, leaving another 30 mtr between the underpass and GIP Mal. There is urgent need for widening and cement lining of existing drainage systems and its cleaning needs to be undertaken on priority. |
