Statewide CPM protests against bus fare hike
Shimla, March 20 CPM activists, led by Tikender Panwar, Sanjay Chauhan, Vijender Mehra and Kishori Dadhwalia, held the protest outside the office of the Deputy Commissioner. Similar dharnas and protests were held at Mandi, Sundernagar, Karsog, Jhanjelo, Sarkaghat, Jogindernagar, Baijnath, Palampur, Dharamsala, Kangra, Chamba, Una, Kullu, Arki, Nahan and Paonta Sahib. CPM leaders said the hike in bus fare would hit the common man severely and hence, the government must withdraw it immediately. “What is worse is the fact that the hike, which was to come into effect from April 1, was enforced a fortnight in advance, much to the misery of the common man,” he said. They said everyday a large number of people in the state commuted by bus, the main mode of transport, and a hike of 30 per cent was bound to make the going very tough for them. “The government must roll back the hike or else the party would once again hold protests on April 8 and intensify its campaign against such anti-people decisions,” said Tikender Panwar. HAMIRPUR: The Hamirpur district committee of the CPM today held a protest demonstration here at the DC office to oppose recent hike in bus fares in the state. Activists of the party assembled at the DC office and raised slogans against the state government, carrying flags and banners, for several hours. The CPM district committee also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister PK Dhumal, demanding withdrawal of bus fare hike. District secretariat member of the CPM Joginder Kumar said bus fares in Himachal Pradesh were already very high and the recent hike would definitely add to the woes of common people reeling under unprecedented price rise of essential commodities. This would also add to miseries of students, women and poor people in the state, he added. The party has urged the Chief Minister to reconsider the decision failing which it would be forced to launch an agitation. Janwadi mahila samiti leader Satya Galoda, SFI leaders Anil Mankotia, Sandeep Thakur and Jagdish Modgil were also present in the protest demonstration. MANDI: In a statewide call today, the CPM and the CPI here staged a protest march against the recent bus fare hike and demanded its roll back. The activists also demanded action against the Rampur police responsible for unprovocked lathicharge on workers there. Holding the protest in front of the DC office, CPM district secretary Bhupender Singh, Kisan Sabha leader Kushal Bhardwaj and CPI leaders Lalit Thakur and AC Verma stated the government’s plea that the bus fare was hiked as the prices of petrol and diesel had gone up, was unacceptable. “It is the duty of the government to find out relief for the common man. We will continue the stir till the government withdraws the fare hike,” they said. They further flayed the government for its inaction in the case of beating up of party workers who were protesting peacefully in support of their demands at Rampur last week. The DSP in charge should be brought to book and the guilty should be punished, they demanded. Left activists also held a similar protest at Balichoki, Karsog and Sarkaghat in the district and submitted memorandum through the SDMs to the government. |
Cong to hold protest rally on April 9
Shimla, March 20 The executive of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee (HPCC) today decided that party workers from all over the state would participate in the rally. HPCC spokesperson Kuldeep Rathore said the protest would be against rampant corruption and burdening of common man by enhancing bus fares. There was no check on “land mafia” which was flourishing as valuable land was being sold at a pittance, he added. “The decision of the government to sell the carton factory at Gumma is totally against the interest of fruit growers,” he said. As part of the preparations for celebrating 125 years of the Congress, HPCC chief Kaul Singh Thakur today constituted committees to take the programme right to the block-level. He chaired a meeting of party office-bearers and executive members here to chalk out the strategy for celebrating the mega event. Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Vidya Stokes also addressed party men on the occasion. Seminars will be held to make people aware about the history and contribution of the Congress in the pre-Independence days and after in shaping the destiny of the nation. He said as per directives of the AICC, functions would be held at the state, district and block-level to mark the completion of historic 125 years of the party. The party chief constituted a five-member monitoring committee under his chairmanship. Four other members of the committee include Vidya Stokes, Viplove Thakur, Gangu Ram Musafir and Kuldeep Kumar. He also constituted a 13-member coordination and a six-member publishing committee. |
Pay arrears to be credited to GPF
Shimla, March 20 The Finance Department today issued a notification in this regard. According to the notification, the amount of Rs 10,000 will be straight away credited to the GPF of the employees. With the government making a budgetary provision of Rs 260 crore in the Budget for 2010-11 to foot the pay arrears, the employees were hopeful of getting a lump sum amount. Much to their dismay, the amount would go to their GPF along with income tax deduction. A total of 1.89 employees stand to benefit from payment of pay arrears which would roughly range from about Rs 15,000 in case of a class IV employee and about Rs 2 lakh in case of class I officer. Chief Minister PK Dhumal had informed the Assembly yesterday that the pay arrears, due to employees from January 1, 2006, would be given. |

Couple joins investigations Solan, March 20 Though the police had been trying to trace them, they sprung a surprise by obtaining interim anticipatory bail yesterday. Their application was now listed for hearing on March 25 for grant of regular bail. They were interrogated for several hours by the police today. Meanwhile, a local court rejected the bail application of Chandigarh-based builder Lalit Jindal and his accomplice Rajat Mahajan last evening after the duo failed to turn up. They had gone into hiding ever since the case had surfaced on March 11. The duo, according to police sources, had handed over Rs 8 lakh cash to Ram Vilas Gupta which was supposed to be given to Ashok Mittal. The police was treading carefully as the case was very sensitive involving key personalities. Since the cash was being handed over to prevail upon Mittal to deny his statement given by him earlier before the State Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau, it had given an edge to the police. |
