Rail Budget Today
Bathinda, February 23 The residents of the region, who are seeing the budget in the backdrop of the coming Assembly election in West Bengal and the price hike, seem unsure about the Vice-president of the Railway Passengers Association, North Zone, Hanuman Dass Goel, said that he did not think that Mamata had anything substantial for the region this time. He, however, said that a Jan Shatabdi train could be introduced by the Rail Minister but not more. Goel said that passenger fare was unlikely to rise as the minister would not like to take the risk of rising the same when prices of others essential commodities were seeing a hike. He, however, said that there might be a rise in goods tariff. Goel urged the Rail Minister to at least fulfill her promises made for the region in the last budget and start the Nanded train at the earliest. President of Railway Welfare Association, Bathinda, AK Garg also did not sound enthusiastic. “I have no expectation this time from Didi,” he said, adding that West Bengal was likely to appear more in her budget speech tomorrow than the other states. Social activist Dr Madan Mohan Garg of Goniana was sure that passenger fare would not increase. There might be a hike in transportation charge of goods, he added. Dr Garg was of the view that Didi would certainly like to come forward in support of weaker sections. But as far as Malwa region is concerned, he sounded a bit pessimistic. Convener of the Joint Action Committee, MM Behal said more could not be expected from Rail Minister Mamata Banerjee in terms of new trains for the residents of Malwa in the backdrop of elections in West Bengal and other factors. He also said that passenger fare, particularly for second class, is unlikely to rise while AC class might see a hike. But some do have hopes and expectations from the Rail Minister. Member of Railway Grievances and Reform Committee, Gidderbaha, Sanjeev Kochhar, said he had pinned high hopes on Didi. “The region is going to get at least a Jan Shatabdi Train,” Kochhar said. He added that Didi would just not rule out the region which got much from her the last time. “The projects might go to West Bengal. But other areas of the country would see new trains,” Kochhar said. |

Mild showers expose chinks in drainage system
Bathinda, February 23 Residents of the town woke up this morning to find almost all roads, especially the Mall road and the Bathinda-Goniana main road, inundated with the rainwater. It was either the faulty slope of the roads or the poor design of sewerage system that till late evening rainwater remained accumulated on both sides of the main roads. “If the sewerage system could not clear the water of a mild rain, how would it function during the rainy season,” asked residents. Some passerby and businessmen, including automobile workshop owners, termed the accumulated water as wastage of crores of rupees spent on roads and sewerage system recently. People had to jump over the accumulated water to reach the shops. “It is just due to this spilled water I could not get any customer for car repair today, as there is no space left outside my shop for the purpose,” said a mechanic near Tinkoni. Elderly Parshotam Singla of the Aggarwal Colony found it tough to park his car outside a battery shop located near the Fauji chowk. Samita Bansal, a housewife, said, “We came here to buy cloth for my daughter but while alighting rickshaw she fell into stagnant water.” BMC Mayor Baljeet Singh Birbehman said, “It was the duty of the officials concerned to lay the road and sewerage pipes in a systematic way so that the rainwater could be cleared immediately. Still, if there is any fault, I will mark an enquiry.” BMC commissioner Ravi Bhagat said, “I am aware of the problem and it can be resolved only after laying a storm water sewerage project throughout the city, which requires lots of funds. We would try to generate it soon.” |
