Bathinda, February 2
After carrying out a fortnight-long operation, the Bathinda police today claimed to have cracked the mystery of a missing school teacher of Bhunder village by declaring him murdered on the very day he was abducted.

The police has arrested four alleged culprits but could not recover the body yet. If police officials are to be believed, the old relations of victim’s wife with one of the arrested accused was the cause behind his murder.

It may be mentioned that the victim, Bhupinder Singh (24), was posted at a school in Shahkot under the Sarv Sikhiya Abhiyan (SSA) and had been missing since January 6 from his village. Villagers had to stage various dharnas and submit a memorandum to prompt the district police to initiate a probe into the case.

SSP Ashish Chaudhary today said one Gurkamal Singh alias Gogi of Dhipali village had an affair with Rajwinder Kaur of Sidhana village when both were studying at Rampura. About three months back, the girl got married to Bhupinder but Gurkamal kept on loving her and wanted to continue the relationship.

In such an attempt, Gurkamal took the help of one Jagdish Singh of Kotda Kodianwala to develop friendship with Bhupinder to make for easy entry to his house so as to meet Rajwinder. However, the attempt did not succeed and Gurkamal consulted with his friends and chalked out a strategy to kill Bhupinder to clear his way.

On January 6 morning, Bhupinder left his house and reached the Rampura bus stand to catch a bus for Shahkot. As of the plan, Gurkamal along with his friends, namely Jagdish Singh, Narinder Pal Singh of Mandi Kalan and Lakhwinder Singh of Dhipali, offered him a lift in their Zen car (PB10BL0039) claiming that they were going to Jalandhar. They followed the Rampura-Salatpura road and after crossing Rampura, they offered Bhupinder a cup of tea in which sleeping pills were already mixed. After drinking the tea, Bhupinder felt unconscious and the accused took him to the banks of Rajasthan canal near Malout. They moved for about two km on the river bank before hitting him hard on his head. Later, they removed all his clothes, tied heavy weight to his waist, threw him in the canal and fled from the spot.

Later, acting upon the complaint of the victim’s family, the police lodged an FIR of abduction under sections 364, 342 and 120-B of the IPC against unknown persons on January 21. During investigation, the police suspected the role of the youths (who are arrested now) after tracing the call details of Bhupinder. However, the accused fled and the police started conducting series of raids at various places in Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

Claiming the accused were nabbed from Mandi Kalan village today, the police officials said they all were booked under sections 302, 201 and 120-B of the IPC. “The accused have admitted to their crime, but we are trying to recover the body. They all would be produced in the courts and we would seek a remand for further probe,” said Bathinda SSP Ashish Chaudhary.

Giving details about the background of the accused, the SSP said one of the suspects Narinder Pal Singh, son of a former DSP, was the main conspirator. He was already facing a similar charge of crushing a man to death to marry his wife.

Mamdot, February 2
Two occupants of a car were shot dead while the other two occupants suffered multiple-injuries after they were fired upon by a group of about 10 persons in this area late last night.

Those, who were killed, were identified as Gurlal Singh alias Gora and Gurmeet Singh. The others who suffered multiple injuries included Jarnail Singh and Ajmer Singh. While Jarnail Singh suffered pellet injuries, Ajmer Singh fractured one of his arms. Both the injured were undergoing treatment in the hospital.

Jasbir Singh, DSP, when contacted, said he along with other cops reached the spot on getting the information and inquired about the incident.

He added that during preliminary investigation, it was found that Kuldeep Singh, Tejbir Singh and Gurmeet Singh and their associates were involved in the double murder. The accused, who belonged to Mamdot town, murdered two persons as they suspected that a girl belonging to their kinship had an affair with the deceased Gurmeet Singh.

He added Gurlal Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Ajmer Singh and Jarnail Singh reached Mamdot bus stand from Murkwala village late last night. When they stopped their car to buy some eatable from the bus stand, they were fired upon by the occupants of three cars, who were already waiting for them at that spot.

As one of the bullets hit the back of Gurmeet Singh, who was driving the car, it turned upside down near Gurudwara Pargatsar. Meanwhile, Gurlal Singh, who was sitting on the rear seat, also received a bullet and died on the spot.

The accused after killing two persons managed to escape from the spot. He said a case in this connection was registered under sections 302, 307, 148 and 149 of the IPC and section 25 of the Arms Act. SPS Parmar, SSP, when contacted, said raids were being conducted at the places where the accused were suspected to be hiding after committing the crime.

Beware of alluring investment schemes as tricksters on the prowl!

Bathinda, February 2
Beware! A trap has been laid to siphon off your hard-earned money through some illegal but quite alluring tricks. Reports reaching TNS say that various groups have started operations in the Malwa belt and are offering ‘investment’ schemes to double or triple your money within a short span. Ironically, the civil and police administration are also waiting for some major scam to surface before swinging into action.

The district magistrates of some districts have already issued restriction orders against such illegal activity under section 144 of the CrPC, but there is hardly anybody to implement the orders. On the other hand, cops are finding themselves unable to take any action in the absence of a formal complaint in this regard.

According to sources, there are three major schemes on offer in the market like invest Rs 1 lakh and get Rs 1,000 daily for three years (except for Sundays and government holidays); another offer allures you to invest Rs 11,000 and get Rs 2,000 per month for a year; and the third, the most alluring one, asks you to pay Rs 6,000 and get a post-dated cheque of Rs 9,000, which could be encashed after 45 days of the investment.

Though people have started investing in such schemes through friends and kin, hardly anybody knows the originator of the schemes.

It may be recalled that two brothers from Bathinda had duped city residents of crores through chit fund schemes and had allegedly fled in April 2009. Later, people lodged dharnas and rued that they have been duped of crores to a couple from Ahmedabad, who had allured them to triple their money within a short time. Though the accused was arrested by the Gujarat police, people of Malwa region could hardly regain a single penny.

When the issue was discussed with Bathinda SSP Ashish Chaudhary, he expressed his worries over the gravity of the situation saying, “The schemes sound alluring. If people themselves are not alert, they will be duped of their hard-earned money.”

But about the duty of the police, the SSP passed the buck saying, “We can take action only if people lodge written complaints.”

Moga, February 2
The SSP of Moga district, Ashok Bath, has suspended police inspector Satnam Singh, in-charge of the CIA staff, Moga, following complaints of corruption against him.

The action against him was taken following a complaint given to the SSP by the Chemists Association that the inspector had taken Rs 9 lakh from a chemist running drugs store at Dharamkot for releasing him.

The chemist Sanjiv Bansal and his brother Ravinder Kumar were taken into custody on January 31 by Satnam Singh allegedly for possessing psychotropic drugs. Bansal in an affidavit given to the SSP on Tuesday alleged that the said police officer took Rs 9 lakh to release him.

He said, “Satnam demanded Rs 15 lakh from him to release both of them but the deal was struck at Rs 9 lakh but even after paying this amount his brother was not released and an FIR was registered against him.” However, an FIR under the NDPS Act was registered against his brother Ravinder, who was sent to the judicial custody by the court of the CJM Karunesh Kumar Kakkar, this afternoon.

Bansal alleged that he was badly bashed up by Satnam Singh and his subordinates in the CIA-Staff and the bruise marks on his feet were confirmed by a medico-legal court conducted by a specialised doctor in the district hospital here.

When contacted, SSP Ashok Bath, confirmed to The Tribune that the inspector Satnam Singh had been suspended and departmental inquiry had initiated against him. Bath said fight of the state government against the drugs mafia would continue .

On the other hand, Satnam Singh while talking to The Tribune refuted all the allegations and said that the chemists were baffled by the drive of the police against sale of psychotropic drugs, therefore, they had levelled the allegations of corruption against him. “I have not taken even a single paisa from anybody,” he claimed.

Deer death
Postmortem to be conducted today
Our Correspondent

Abohar, February 2
Battlelines were drawn between the authorities and the Akhil Bhartiya Jeev Raksha Bishnoi Sabha today as the senior veterinary surgeon here backtracked from his decision to get the postmortem of a female deer conducted by three-member board of surgeons on the pretext that the forest and wildlife department had not made a request for it.

Perturbed over the refusal, the office-bearers of the Sabha met the local officer in-charge of the forest and wildlife department but the latter refused to accept the memorandum that the deputation led by the Sabha vice-president Ramesh Kumar Bishnoi sought to submit.

The deputation then sought the intervention of the SDM Amit Dhaka alleging that the forest and wildlife officials had not only failed in protecting the species/animals but appeared to be hand in gloves with the hunters. The department prefers to deny hunting incidents to save its skin.

An official of the sub-divisional veterinary hospital confirmed in the evening that postmortem of the deer would now be conducted tomorrow morning as per directions issued by the SDM.

Notably, a female deer was found dead in village Rampura near the inter-state border on Sunday. Earlier, horns of two deer were recovered in villages in the wildlife sanctuary. Every time the department asserted that stray dogs and not the hunters had killed the protected animals.
