Chilly winds numb Delhi
New Delhi, January 4 According to weathermen, more cold is in store as the minimum temperature is likely to dip further tomorrow. While the maximum temperature is expected to hover around 7 degree Celsius, the minimum is likely to rest at 19 degree Celsius. The weatherman also predicts mist or shallow fog in the early morning. While some in the city are enjoying the chilly weather with hot coffees and warm meals, most Delhiites found it difficult to even step out of their homes. “It took courage to step out of my home today for work. It was freakishly cold that the winds hurt my hands,” said Vishakha, who travels every day to Noida from Delhi for work. The chilly winds gave a horrid time to those riding two-wheelers. Madhur, an HR executive said, “After I drove myself to work, I couldn’t feel my hands for at least 20 minutes. They were completely numb. I am just dreading going back home during the night, when it will be much colder.” When contacted, the metrological department officials attributed the cold weather to the icy winds blowing from Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir. Mist was experienced in the morning which brought down the visibility to 1000 meters. However, there was no disruption in the flight operations at IGI Airport as fog did not hamper the visibility on the runways. During the last couple of days, heavy fog had thrown rail and air traffic out of gear, creating endless problems for passengers as they were grounded at the railway stations and airports for hours. |

Earlier, she had said government was considering closing at least the primary schools to give relief to the

NGOs threaten to take govt to court on homeless issue
New Delhi, January 4 The umbrella organisation also accused the Delhi police of indulging in atrocities on homeless people and said it was contemplating legal action including filing a PIL. Taking the issue of the poor and homeless, who spend their nights on pavements, the Urban Rights Forum blamed the government of being “anti-poor” and “urban-centric.” It also threatened the Chief Minister that members of the NGO would sit on a dharna outside her house at night in protest against the eviction of the homeless. The officials said that the government’s priorities are the Commonwealth Games and the Delhi Metro but it had forgotten the welfare of those labourers who are working at construction sites. Former United Nations Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing Miloon Kothari said, “Temporary shelters built for the homeless have been demolished from time to time. The government needs to be held accountable for the persistent human rights violation against the homeless.” He added that the Commonwealth Games were being used just to create an illusion of the national Capital. “The severe winter calls for an immediate humanitarian response. Tragically, the government has failed on this front,” he said. Homeless rights activist Indu Prakash Singh said that the lack of coordination between the government authorities had emerged to be a big problem. He said, “A temporary shelter was built on Pusa Road by the government but was later razed by the MCD which said it was unauthorised.” A shelter for women built in the Sarojini Nagar area is being illegally occupied Singh said adding that the department of Social Welfare had washed its hands off the responsibility. He also alleged that Delhi police often lathi-charged homeless people accusing them of being terrorists and bringing in explosives into the Capital. Mansoor khan of Beghar Mazdoor Sanghrash Samiti said, “The government says migration is the root cause of the problem and sending migrants back to their home states is the only solution. However, this is a violation of the ‘Right to Movement’ provided by the Indian Constitution.” The government has not been able to resettle the evicted people in custodial institutions and the failure to address this issue is “criminal negligence”, he added. |

The information was further developed and it was found that Harshit along with three other persons was present in Ashok Vihar on the day of the incident and even prior to that. After further investigation, the police arrested Vikas Aggarwal, Praveen Goyal and Harshit Prabhaklar. During interrogation, the three disclosed that the information about the cash being transferred to bank was given to them by one Jitesh, alias Jitu. 4 villages still out of nagar pallika domain
Ghaziabad, January 4 In 1954, the state government had issued notification expanding the area of nagar pallikas and nagar panchayats in the state. Begamabad, Bishokhar, Kadrabad and Sikri Khurd villages were included in the Modi Nagar nagar pallika area. But decision could not be implemented so far. In 2004, the Nagar Vikas Vibhag approved the inclusion of these villages in the nagar pallika area. However, pradhans of these villages moved the High Court over this decision stating they were not interested in being included in the nagar pallika area. Sikri Khurd’s former Pradhan and husband of present pradhan Khadak Singh said panchayats do the development work in the villages. If they are transferred to nagar pallika, pradhans will lose their status and nobody will respect them as all powers will be vested into nagar pallika. On the other hand, villagers Pratap Singh, Shiv Kumar Gupta and many others said that in this tussle, development of villages was affected. Begmabad’s former BDC Chandersekhar Sharma too felt it was affecting the development. |

She said that the ecological balance was being disturbed to meet needs of the people. “We will have to face a strong challenge if concrete steps for preservation of ecology are not immediately taken. Suffering from obesity or losing hair?
It might be a thyroid problem
New Delhi, January 4 As many as over 4.2 crore people in India suffer from various ailments related to thyroid, but many do not go for check-up due to ignorance. To generate awareness about the prevalence and morbidity of thyroid-associated ailments, the Indian Thyroid Society (ITS) has kick-started a campaign titled ‘Think Thyroid Month’. Around 600 camps have been set up across the country for conducting screening. ITS chairperson Dr R.V. Jayakumar said, “Millions of people have an undiagnosed thyroid problem, and they don’t realise that it is the source of the other health ailments they face. Obesity, depression, fatigue, high cholesterol, infertility and many other conditions are often the direct result of undiagnosed and untreated thyroid conditions.” The thyroid gland stores and releases hormones which facilitate effective functioning of body. “When the thyroid gland fails to produce enough hormones, a person suffers from hypothyroidism with conditions of fatigue, weight gain, intolerance to cold, sleepiness, depression and enlarged thyroid,” said Dr Jayakumar. Generally, thyroid tests do not form a part of regular blood tests, and hence he suggested people to go for a blood test called as Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH) test. It is through this test that even mild cases of hypothyroidism can be effectively detected before symptoms appear, he added. |
