Twin murder case cracked, jawan held

The police has claimed to have solved the murder case with the arrest of Sukhbir Singh, a jawan in the 7 Sikh Regiment. Ashu Bagga and his father Ashwani Bagga were murdered on Monday. While talking to the mediapersons, SSP R.K. Jaiswal and SP (Traffic) S.K. Agnihotri said during interrogation the accused confessed that on December 18 he had gone to shop of killed persons to get his mobile recharged.

When the countries across the world are discussing climate change, the All-India Tug of War Federation has set a new trend of conserving nature and help reduce global warming. It distributed saplings, instead of mementos, to the chief guests of All India Tug of War Championship held in Dusehra Ground of Jalandhar Cantonment.

Taking serious notice of the growing tension between supporters of a temple priest and Shiv sainiks in Phagwara, the District Magistrate Kapurthala has imposed prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC. Confirming this, Phagwara SDM Amarjeet Paul said the prohibitory orders would remain in force till February 20, 2010.

3 peddlers nabbed

The police arrested three members of an inter-state gang of drug peddlers, identified as Sanjay Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar and Waryam Singh, all residents of Ambala cantonment, at a police naka at Apra Road, Mukandpur and seized 500 gm heroin worth Rs 2.5 crore from their possession.

SHO suspended for negligence

The police today suspended the Station House Officer of B-division Police Station for negligence in a case of land grabbing, which occurred a couple of days back. The police authorities confirming this said Sukhwinder Singh has been sent to the police line.

The Government School Lecturer Union, Punjab, lambasted the state education authorities for appointing vocational masters as principals in government schools and neglecting the senior government school lecturers for the posts.

The union members maintained that the state education authorities appointed nearly 184 vocational masters as principals in the government schools against the sanctioned posts of 43.

Union president Hakam Singh said the wrong recruitment policies irrespective of the low educational qualifications and experience of the vocational masters has led to furore among the college lecturers who have been ignored in the due course of time. As many as 80 lecturers from different districts of the state gathered at the local Government Junior Model School to attend a meeting in this regard. It was decided that the state education authorities should take remedial measures to stop the injustice meted out to the deserving senior lecturers of the government schools.

Meanwhile, members of the B.Ed Teachers Front, Punjab, would take up the matter of implementation of a notification pertaining to their salaries with Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal on December 28.

A meeting in this regard was conducted by the President of the front, Ravinder Singh and Senior Vice President, Chander Sheikhar today. The front members warned the SAD-BJP government to implement the notification orders failing which state-wide protests would be held in the coming days.

Also in the protest mode, members of the Private Colleges Non-Teaching Employees Union, Punjab and Chandigarh, today decided to intensify their agitation against the non-implementation of their demands by the state government.

It was decided that the union would take out a massive state level rally in January against the failure of the SAD government in fulfilling their long-pending demands. The union has been demanding notification of the Sixth Pay Commission with effect from January 1, 2006 along with interim relief, medical allowance and the lifting the ban from fresh recruitments in the non-teaching staff. Union President Kulwant Singh from the local Hans Raj Mahila Maha Vidyalaya said that the union members across the state would boycott the university examinations.

Rs 258 crore being spent on GMCs upgradation

The process to introduce online pre-medical entrance tests in Punjab was in the pipeline, said Medical Education and Forest Minister Tikshan Sood, adding, “It would be introduced in next two years.”

He said the Punjab Government in its efforts to promote traditional Ayurvedic treatment, would soon open an Ayurvedic university in Hoshiarpur. The minister said the university, on which Rs 50 crore was being spent, would start functioning in next two years. He said infrastructure of Government Medical Colleges in Amritsar, Patiala and Faridkot was being upgraded by spending Rs 150 crore, Rs 20 crore and Rs 68 crore, respectively.

Replying to a question on providing better treatment in the state, Sood said the department was in the process of contacting big medical institutions of the country to get medical advice through video conferencing system, which would soon be installed in some important medical Institutions of the country.

On forest cover, he said though 12-square kilometre area of the state was brought under the forestry, eight-square kilometer area would have to be sacrificed to pave way for national highways broadening and other developmental works of the state.

In a shocking incident, a sub-inspector allegedly raped a woman and later married and aborted her child. The district police has booked the SI along with several others, including a woman, on charges of bigamy and cheating the victim on pretext of getting her divorce from her first husband.

The complainant in her statement alleged that the accused Sub inspector, Mangal Singh, posted at police line and resident of Pawan Nagar forcibly raped her and continued to make physical relationship on pretext of getting married.

Other accused have been identified as Inderjit Singh of Kot Mit Singh, Harjinderpal Singh of Choura Bazaar, Sonia Sharma of Tarn Taran Road here.

While narrating her woes, the victim in her complaint alleged that the accused met her during a hearing in the court in her divorce case. She said they expressed sympathy and promised to help her in getting divorce and punishment to her husband.

She said they starting coming to her house. One day Mangal Singh and Inderjit Singh came to her house and raped her on a gun point. She said Mangal promised her to get married as he had already divorced his wife. Later, she came to know that Mangal had not divorced his first wife.

She alleged that meanwhile she got pregnant and when Mangal came to know about this, he forcibly aborted her fetus. She alleged after this Mangal did not come to her house and when she went to his wife, he threw her out of the house. She alleged Mangal later came to her house and threatened her of dire consequences. She said he gave some poisonous substance to her due to which she remained in hospital.

Meanwhile, a case has been registered at D-division police station under sections 313, 494, 493, 420, 506 of the IPC while no arrest has been made so far.

Twin murder case cracked, jawan held

The police has claimed to have solved the murder case with the arrest of Sukhbir Singh, a jawan in the 7 Sikh Regiment. Ashu Bagga and his father Ashwani Bagga were murdered on Monday. While talking to the mediapersons, SSP R.K. Jaiswal and SP (Traffic) S.K. Agnihotri said during interrogation the accused confessed that on December 18 he had gone to shop of killed persons to get his mobile recharged.

He admitted that a clash took place between him and father-son duo. Feeling humiliated, he again came to the shop on December 21 and fired at both Ashu and Ashwani Bagga. The SSP said the number was traced through the details of mobile recharges done. Details of empty cartridges also gave us clue. The tower of mobile, which was recharged by the shop owners, is detected near Haripur range, where the 7 Sikh Regiment came for a shooting competition. Sukhbir Singh is a resident of Bukkarvaal village near Raikot.

Woman murdered

An aged woman, identified as Bachan Kaur, has been found murdered at her house located at Mulewal Khaira village falling under Shahkot police station. It is suspected the widow was murdered by thieves, who were in the process of stealing valuables from her house. The police has reportedly rounded up some villagers for investigations. — TNS

Saplings replace mementos

When the countries across the world are discussing climate change, the All-India Tug of War Federation has set a new trend of conserving nature and help reduce global warming. It distributed saplings, instead of mementos, to the chief guests of All India Tug of War Championship held in Dusehra Ground of Jalandhar Cantonment. Not only this, the federation also discouraged the felicitation of organisers of championship by giving them mementos.

“Through the medium of games, we also want to gave message to the society regarding the already much debated matter of global warming. Though our effort was very symbolic, but these symbolic messages can be transformed into campaigns and trends,” said MLA Jalandhar Jagbir Brar, who is also state president of the federation.

“We want to discourage use of mementos as these are manufactured by cutting trees. This issue should be addressed across the party lines”, he added.

Another positive spirit of championship is that it was inaugurated by BJP MLA KD Bhandari, interestingly who is the MLA from another constituency. Players across 11 states are participating in the championship.

Confirming this, Phagwara SDM Amarjeet Paul said the prohibitory orders would remain in force till February 20, 2010.

DSP Harkamalpreet Singh Khakh has instructed the SHOs of Phagwara Sub-Division to strictly enforce the prohibitory orders to prevent any untoward incident.

He said digging of temporary wells in rural and urban localities has also been banned in the locality.

Meanwhile, DSP Khakh said all chemists have been instructed, not to sell any medicine without valid prescription of a qualified doctor. The DSP said the teams of police with the assistance of health department have been instructed to monitor the illegal sale of intoxicants which was pushing the youths into drugs abuse.

He said police officials had been instructed to check and remove encroachments on government lands and service roads along the national highways. — OC

Murder accused arrested

Batala, December 26
The police has arrested Maninder Singh, who is among four accused in the murder of Ashfaq Butt of Srinagar.

Resident of Fateh Garh Churian village, Maninder along with his sister Rupinder Kaur, father Iqbal Singh and brother-in-law Narinder Singh allegedly murdered Ashfaq on December 21 as the latter was reportedly blackmailing the family.

As per information, Ashfaq had married Rupinder Kaur in Delhi, where they underwent professional training a few years back. They had a son from the marriage.

But differences popped up soon, after which they started living separately. Rupinder returned to her parental house with her son. Finally, they decided to take divorce.

But after divorce, according to the family sources, Ashfaq used to blackmail Rupinder over the custody of the child. He was also planning to go to court over the issue.

The family sources further claimed that the deceased was threatening to kidnap his son from the school if he was not given money. Ashfaq took Rs 30 lakh from the girl family to in exchange of custody of the child.

Batala SSP D.P. Singh said a case under sections 302 and 34 of the IPC was registered at police station Fateh Garh Churian. Except Maninder, others were still absconding. — OC

3 peddlers nabbed

The police arrested three members of an inter-state gang of drug peddlers, identified as Sanjay Kumar, Sanjiv Kumar and Waryam Singh, all residents of Ambala cantonment, at a police naka at Apra Road, Mukandpur and seized 500 gm heroin worth Rs 2.5 crore from their possession.

The peddlers were coming to Mukandpur from the Apra side on a motorcycle. The police intercepted them and seized the heroin. During interrogation, they revealed that one Rajiv of Ambala Cantonment was instrumental in mobilising them into the trade and got them introduced to a Jammu-based drug supplier named Bunty. A case under sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against them.

Swindlers arrested

Tarn Taran: The police has nabbed two persons, identified as Ravinder Singh and Bikkar Singh, both of Hoshiarpur district, for allegedly defrauding people and for possessing drugs and weapons.

The police also seized two pistols, four cartridges, one magazine and 20 grams of smack from them.

The police also recovered Rs 20,000, which the fraudsters collected by cheating people luring them to solve their domestic problems.

Railway Sources said Delhi-bound Superfast Express, Shatabadi Express, Dadar Express, Barauni Express, Sachkhand Express, Pashchim Express and Amritsar and Jammu bound Howrah Mail, Frontier Mail, Moorie Express, Jhelam Express, Sialdah Express, besides several other trains, were running late due to foggy weather.

Meanwhile, railway employees were seen bursting crackers on the railway lines near Fog Signal Posts to give clearance signals to the coming trains during fog.

SHO suspended for negligence

The police today suspended the Station House Officer of B-division Police Station for negligence in a case of land grabbing, which occurred a couple of days back. The police authorities confirming this said Sukhwinder Singh has been sent to the police line. According to information, certain armed persons have tried to grab a transport land near Gheo mandi area. Even as the aggrieved party informed the police, the SHO reached the spot late. The accused had also opened fire. The authorities said during preliminary investigations, Sukhwinder was found guilty of negligence.

According to police sources, Didar Singh fell down on the causeway due to severe cold while going to his village on Monday night. He remained unnoticed there the whole night due to which he died. — OC
