Residents force MC to repair road after 20 yrs
Amritsar, December 20 In fact, hundreds of residents, led by Congress councillor from Ward 29 Navdeep Singh Goldi, braved the bone-chilling cold as they spent the Friday night on the road. If this was not enough, women residents, who joined the protesting menfolk, had to cook their food on the road as they resolved to not to allow the paver machine of the MC contractor to leave the place. The protesters, including women and children, had been sitting on the road since Friday evening after the contractor of the Amritisar Municipal Corporation allegedly left the relaying of the road in their area midway allegedly on the instructions of a BJP leader. They, however, were stunned to see that a 40-50 policemen descended on the scene in the morning and started beating them up with lathis. “Initially, the police did not listen to us and subjected us to lathi charge. They only softened their stance when we told them that we were protesting against the indifferent attitude of the MC authorities which had stopped construction of the road half way. Men of the contractor told us that they were forced to leave the work in the middle as they had got instructions to leave the area and construct a road in the area of an MLA. They had relaid just 300 feet of the 600 feet road when they tried to pack up. The road was being repaired after a 20-year wait,” rued Goldy. He said the work started on the road late on Saturday afternoon only after two residents, Sharanjit Singh and Kuljit Singh, perched atop the paver machine and threatened to immolate themselves by pouring kerosene on themselves. He alleged that the MC authorities were ignoring his ward and the MC was equipped with just one paver machine which had led to development works coming to a standstill. MC Commissioner D.P.S. Kharbanda said he had instructed the contractor to start work the moment he had come to know that the work on the road had got stalled. “I have already talked to Goldy. We will complete the work and there is no question of any discrimination,” claimed Kharbanda. |

Foreign Dreams
Hoshiarpur, December 20 This was stated by MLA of Edmonton-Ellerslie Constituency, Alberta state of Canada, Naresh Bhardwaj, who was here on a private visit, here yesterday. A number of Indian brides had been suffering at the hands of NRI grooms, but none of the sufferers had ever reported the matter to the Canadian government. He would make all possible efforts to rehabilitate such victims, if the parents approached him in this connection, he said. Comparing politicians of India and Canada, Bhardwaj said politicians in Canada generally opted for politics to serve the people. He belonged to Pandori Nizran village of Jalandhar and after completing matriculation, he went to Canada in 1976. After settling there, he joined the Progressive Conservative Party to serve the people. More than one lakh Punjabis have been living in Alberta. The Alberta assembly comprising 83 members had five Punjabis elected as MLAs. Referring to the ongoing recession in the world, he said the Canadian government was financially sound. There was a great demand of workers i.e. labourers and technical experts in Alberta state a year ago. The recession in every field had restricted the demand to a great extent which would again be increased soon after the end of the recession. Cautioning the Punjabi youths seeking immigration to Canada not to be misled by unscrupulous elements, Bhardwaj exhorted them to directly approach the Canadian High Commission in this regard. |

Nawanshahr, December 20 The CM was addressing the concluding session of the three-day-long religious congregation organised to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of Swami Lal Dass Bhuriwale, second master of the Bhuriwale sect, celebrated by the Maharaj Brahmanand Bhuriwale Garibdassi (MBBG) Trust under the patronage of Maharaj Chetnanand at Tapparian Khurd village on Friday. “It seems incredible, but true that the Maharaj Brahmanand Bhuriwale Trust has not only set up seven colleges, a hospital and a gaushala but has also been instrumental in the development of infrastructural facilities like roads, drinking water, irrigation facility, etc. in the Kandi area with the active cooperation of philanthropists and the government,” said Badal. Responding to the demands put forth by Prof Mohinder Singh Baghi, president, MBBG Trust, the CM said the widening of the Kular Tibba-Nangal road would be completed soon. He announced a grant of Rs 20 lakh to the MBBG Trust in two equal instalments for the development of educational institutions being run by the trust. Badal said the state would be made power surplus within two years. “The collaboration of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee President Paramjit Singh Sarna and former CM Capt Amarinder Singh for the ensuing SGPC poll would not have any effect in Punjab,” said Badal. |

Nawanshahr, December 20 Acting on a tip-off, a department team, led by District Health Officer Dr Ashok Guru, in collaboration with the police seized about 3.5 quintals of “substandard” gachchak and different variety of sweets from Mani Mazra resident Satish Kumar after intercepting his car at a naka at Kathgarh village on the Nawanshahr-Chandigarh highway here yesterday. The DHO said Satish Kumar had been supplying these sweets to shops in Nawanshahr district. More than one quintal of gachchak was found packed in a wrapper with trademark of “Mahadev Ji”, but there was no date of manufacturing, expiry or batch number on the wrapper. Similarly, the supplier could not show any bill of different varieties of sweets - burfi (60 kg), gajrella (20 kg), milk cake (25 kg), patisa (50 kg), bhugga (25 kg) and kalakand (20 kg), said the DHO. He said one could easily guess the quality of the sweets from the revelations made by the supplier, in which he said he had been purchasing the sweets at the rate of Rs 50 to 60 per kg and supplying it to the sweet shops just at a margin of Rs 5 to 10 per kg while the sweets made of khoya were being sold at about Rs 150 kg in the market.
