Presence of Pak nationals creates flutter in Fazilka
Fazilka, December 22 It is stated that Hazi Mohammad Akram, claiming to be a retired Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court and a resident of Lahore, Shahnawaz Karhia, advocate and a resident of district Pakpattan and Rana Manzoor Ahmad, a resident of Malka Haans district in Pakpattan who claims to be a folk singer of Pakistan, allegedly slipped into the village without a valid visa from the Government of India. They also managed to leave the village without scrutiny from government agencies. These activities of the Pak 'visitors' have caused ripples, sensation and restlessness amongst the sleuths. The trio reportedly met affluent and influential persons of the village and a politician of the ruling party. The trio was also accorded a warm welcome by their 'hosts.' Inter University Cricket Tournament
Bathinda, December 22 This was the first upset of the tourney as Allahabad University, with a plethora of talented youngsters in their ranks, were considered to be heavyweights in the tourney. After being square driven off the very first ball of the match, Puneet Ladher made sure his length and line were in order for the rest of his spell. Charging in against the breeze, he bowled some good out-swingers and off one of them he managed to find the edge of opener Amit Khurana's blade. In the same over, the diminutive fast bowler castled the other opener Rajiv Mishra when the batsman failed to bring his bat down to an in-swinging yorker, delivered with good effect from close to the stumps. Vinay Khurana, the tall middle order batsman, threatened to run amok scoring 18 runs off the first over that spinner Atul Kumar bowled. However, Puneet lured him into a trap by placing a fielder on the square leg boundary. He bowled a ferocious bouncer and the batsman hooked it deep down the throat of the fieldsman. Once Vinay was gone, it was all over bar the shouting for Allahabad who had their reputation shredded to smithereens by their rivals. Chasing a not too impressive 89, Kurukshetra completed the rituals in just 19 overs. Opener Ashok Kumar held the forte with his wide array of strokes and one of his shots-an inside out boundary to the cover fence which rushed to the ropes like a bullet-- stood out for the finesse with which it was executed. Ashok looked like going great guns but got dismissed in an unlucky manner. He mistimed a ball which kept agonisingly low to the midwicket fielder but till then damage had been done for Allahabad. When the fielders left the ground, their drooping shoulders--- and faces buried in their hands--- told the story of a fancied outfit being shone the door by less capable rivals. In the other match of the day played at the Police Public School, Dr BR Ambedkar National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jalandhar, beat Lovely Professional University, Jalandhar, by five wickets in a match which never rose to the level of an intense contest. |
