Despite the best efforts of the health department, the deadly disease-swine flu -- is still not under control and is spreading in the district.

According to District Health Officer (DHO) Dharampal Singh Sekhon, as many as 18 persons belonging to Bathinda district were under 'B-category' treatment of the disease, till today.

Meanwhile, taking precautions, the health department has been monitoring about 116 more persons, who had come in contact with the suspected as well as detected cases.

As per the information received, the district health department has prepared audio cassettes to make people aware about the symptoms of swine flu, which also urges people not to panick.

To reduce the anxiety level among the common people, the district health department has publicized the contact number of the medical officers concerned. Besides arranging for a separate ICU ward, a special control room has also been set up to deal with swine flu regarding calls and information.

When contacted, the DHO informed that the samples of the 30-year-old suspected male patient from Bathinda, who was admitted to the Civil Hospital on Saturday, were sent to the PGIMER, Chnadigarh but no further information could be received from there.

Informing about some snag in the laboratory at PGI, the DHO said, "We had sent the samples of that two-and-a-half-year-old girl on Saturday, who was then referred to Patiala, but we could not get her report, till evening. Besides the technical snag, there is heavy rush from all over for testing, so the reports are getting delayed."

It may be mentioned that during the past a few days, Bathinda district has witnessed three deaths due to swine flu, as a result of which panic has struck people more than the actual intensity of the disease.

400 trees felled in forest area
Chander Parkash
Tribune News Service

Ferozepur, December 20
As many as 400 trees were allegedly felled by unscrupulous elements with the active support of a section of revenue officials in the forest area measuring 65 acres and situated alongside the banks of Ferozepur sub-branch (FSB) canal, near Langeana village, five kilometres from this town.

Official sources said that illegal felling of trees by the unscrupulous elements had been facilitated by a section of revenue officials, who had shown these elements as cultivators on the forest land belonging to the provincial government by tampering with the revenue record.

The revenue officials involved in this fraud had minted money in this illegal exercise.

Gurjeet Singh Pannu, SDM, Ferozepur, who visited the spot, said that action would be taken against the revenue officials, who had tampered with the record of revenue department by showing the unscrupulous elements as cultivators of forest land just to facilitate them to cut the trees.

He added that land would be taken back from the possession of illegal occupants and would be brought under plantation.

An intensified patrolling of the area had been started for round-the-clock so that illegal felling of trees could be stopped immediately. Now, the area would be cleared of unscrupulous elements and would be developed as green belt.

Mahavir Singh, District Forest Officer (DFO), Ferozepur, said that those, who had illegally cut the fully grown trees, were being identified for registration of criminal cases against them.

Two unscrupulous elements were arrested a few days ago for illegally felling the trees into the forest area.

He alleged that trees, which were about 15-20 years old, were felled in a planned manner by the unscrupulous elements in the past about three years.

He said that whenever the officials of forest department tried to stop these unscrupulous elements from illegally felling the trees, the unscrupulous elements always tried to attack them. He said that even two fully grown eucalyptus trees were felled last night.

He pointed out that a few months ago, an application was moved with the police authorities for registering a criminal case against a few persons, who were involved in felling of about 60 trees in this area but no action was taken against them.

He said that things started moving in the right direction when the matter was brought to the notice of Deputy Commissioner KK Yadav as the revenue officials, who had been facilitating the illegal felling, had been taken to task.

Our Correspondent

Abohar, December 20
The Punjab State Human Rights Commission has asked the chief engineers of the irrigation, canal and drainage departments, Punjab, to submit report on supply of the contaminated water for human consumption in the Malwa region. The report has to be submitted on or before January 28 next year, legislator Sunil Jakhar informed on Sunday.

The Commission has taken cognisance of the media reports that quoted Jakhar telling the members of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Estimates Committee and senior officers about unchecked discharge of disposal water in the canal system during an inspection of the Buddha Nala at Ludhiana recently.

The legislator had prompted the visiting team to have a close look at the stinking water that was being supplied to millions of residents in the Malwa region through Sarhind feeder and Abohar branch.

Notably, the Commission had initially taken up the matter five years back also and the state government had reportedly given an undertaking that measures would be taken to stop flow of the sewerage water and chemical effluents in the canals of the region.

Later, the Punjab and Haryana High Court too had expressed concern over the same.

Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had recently claimed that a plan to clean the canals had been formulated. However, the MLA resented that minimum allocation has been made for the canals of the region.
