T&T blast rip Cobras apart
Win by seven wickets, enter final

Hyderabad, October 22
Dwayne Bravo struck form with a bludgeoning 34-ball 58 as Trinidad and Tobago stretched their unbeaten run to the final of the Champions League, thrashing Cape Cobras by seven wickets in the blood-and-guts second semifinal here today.

Chasing a stiff 176 to set up final with NSW Blues, Bravo and skipper Daren Ganga (44) produced a match-winning unbeaten 93-run stand for the third wicket and overhauled the target with four balls to spare at Rajiv Gandhi stadium.

Riding on fantastic knocks of JP Duminy (62 not out) and Herschelle Gibbs (42), Cape Cobras put up a competitive 175 for five in 20 overs, after opting to bat.

The match was evenly balanced as the Caribbean had lost three wickets at the half-way mark but Bravo and Ganga batted fearlessly and took the match away from the South Africans, who were let down by some poor fielding.

Bravo’s knock was laced with four fours and three sixes while Daren Ganga’s unbeaten knock was studded with one hour and two sixes. The Caribbean side made a blazing start to their chase as William Perkins (20) and Adrian Barath (29) rattled up 53 in the first five overs.

Charl Langeveldt bowled two cheap overs and it was Monde Zondeki who had a first hand experience of the Caribbean fury. Barath creamed Zondeki for two fours and a six in his first over and Perkins smashed him for three boundaries in his second over as the poor paceman ended up giving away 30 runs out of 38 on the board.

Rory Kleinvedlt was welcomed with a four by Perkins and Barath got into action with a four and six before a terrible mix up between the duo resulted in run out of Perkins.

Duminy came in and strcuk in the second ball, trapping Barath and the two rampaging openers were back in the hut. Lendl Simmons (20) hit Claude Henderson for a massive six over long-off and got two lives when he was dropped by Henry Davids once off Henderson and few balls later off Duminy.

Justin Ontong got rid of Simmons in the first ball of his spell when he had him caught by Kleinveldt at mid-wicket as the Caribbean side reach 85 at half-way mark. Skipper Daren and Bravo then erected that magnificent partnership to steer their side to yet another win.

Earlier, Duminy showed patience when his partners were changing quickly from the other end and cut loose towards the end to shape the innings of his side. The 40-ball knock of the left-hander was adorned with four fours and three sixes.

Gibbs, struggling for runs, struck form when it mattered most as he smashed his way to 27-ball 42, which provided the impetus to the South African innings in the first half. — PTI

INDIA-AUS ODI Series
Indians can expect lot of chin-music: Johnson

Mumbai, October 22
Australian speedster Mitchell Johnson today issued a warning to the Indian batsmen saying that they should expect a lot of chin-music from the Aussie bowlers during the seven-match ODI series.

“You want chin music, there’ll be a lot of chin music,” Johnson said when asked why the Australian team have not talked about targeting the Indian batsmen, who have recently been under fire for their failure to cope with rising deliveries, with the short-pitched
deliveries.

Johnson, who was named as the ICC Player of the Year for 2008-09, said he had not expected the top honour especially after a poor Ashes where his performance with the ball came under severe criticism. “Honestly, I didn’t feel I might win any award. Thought I had a little chance with the Test award but that went to Gautam (Gambhir),” he said.

“The award totally surprised me, especially after my performance against England. I am quite proud of it,” said the left armer who has 102 ODI and 114 Test wickets to his name. On his disappointing performance in the Ashes, Johnson said, “the Lord’s game was the hardest game. I was thinking about every other thing other than bowling a good line and length. I was pretty disappointed.”

All-rounder James Hopes said the experience of playing in the Indian Premier League will help the Australian players to cope with the pressure of playing in front of the expected large crowds. “The IPL has helped us get used to playing in front of the big crowds. So when Sachin Tendulkar walks out the next time to bat, we won’t get overawed,” he said.

Hopes felt it was a blessing in disguise for the Aussies that the two Australian teams - Victoria Bushrangers and New South Wales (NSW) - had met in the semifinal itself and not the final. “It was a blessing for us that the Victoria and NSW played in the semi-finals itself. Otherwise we would have been in a situation where we would have six players joining the team a day before the match.”

Opener Shaun Marsh supported Hopes view that the IPL experience would help him during the seven-match series. “I had a bit of success here and am familiar with the grounds here. It would be helpful,” he said.

“However, it would be a different game playing in the IPL and against the Indian team,” he added. Asked whether he has advised his country-mates on how to bowl against his Kings XI skipper Yuvraj Singh, he said, “Yuvi is a wonderful batsman, I’m sure the bowlers will chalk out a plan. He is a dangerous batsman and I hope he does not score too many runs against us.”

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine, who had an impressive start to his career with the bat, said that he was looking forward to the opportunity to make yet another impression before the first choice keeper, injured Brad Haddin returns to the team.

“This is an opportunity for me to show that I can play international cricket. Brad (Haddin) returns next month so I’ve to make sure that I make the most of the opportunity,” he said. “It’s exciting to be playing against some of the world’s best players. I’m nervous but the other 13 games I’ve played have been equally important,” he said. — PTI

Astroturf for Jarkhar hockey academy
Kanchan Vasdev
Tribune News Service

Ludhiana, October 22
In a major boost for the revival of hockey in Punjab, Jarkhar hockey stadium would soon have its own astroturf with the Finance Minster, Manpreet Singh Badal announcing Rs 40 lakhs for purchasing the mat. Jarkhar village would become the fifth hockey ground in state and second village to have its own astroturf. The announcement was made on the unveiling function of statues of hockey stars including Pirthipal, popularly known as king of penalty corners and Surjit Singh Randhawa, an Arjuna awardee. State Finance Minister Manpreet Badal presided over the function.

Earlier Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar and Bhaini Sahib had astroturfs to train hockey players. The National Institute of Sports, Patiala already boasts of a synthetic mat but that is an initiative of Sports Authority of India. Promoters of hockey said that Rs 40 lakh would prove to be pivotal as it would be used to construct a base on which the synthetic mat would be laid shortly.

It is learnt that a ‘‘worn out ’’ mat has already been procured by Jarkhar hockey academy and it has already been laid on half of the ground for organising (six A side) matches. Within a few days the entire hockey ground with an astroturf would be in place.

The academy has also made arrangements for water sprinkling system on the mat. ‘‘We are planning to buy a super sobber to clean the synthetic mat.’’ said Jagroop Singh Jarkhar, an office bearer of Mata Sahib Kaur Sports Club, Jarkhar.

He added they had already spent Rs 80 lakhs for the hockey stadium since its inception four years ago. An office bearer on the condition of anonymity said their labour bore fruit today as Sansarpur in Jalandhar that has a history of hockey dating back to several decades and Kila Raipur, the venue of rural olympics that hosts hockey tournaments since 1933 are yet to be included in the illustrious list of having an exclusive astroturf.

The finance minister said the government is enhancing the sports budget by 40 per cent every year.

He said the government treated the sportpersons as ambassadors to different countries and were committed to provide them all kinds of facilities so that they would win maximum medals.

UEFA Champions League
Pato double help Milan beat Real Madrid 3-2

Paris, October 22
A double from Alex Pato saw AC Milan win the battle of the European giants as they beat Real Madrid 3-2 in the Bernabeu for a crucial victory in their Champions League campaign. Milan’s victory yesterday saw them draw level with Real in Group C. Both English clubs preserved their perfect records with Manchester United beating CSKA Moscow 1-0 in Moscow at the scene of where they beat Chelsea in the final last year.

Antonio Valencia’s goal not only gave them their first ever European win over Russian opposition but also equalled Dutch giants Ajax’s Champions League record of 14 successive matches unbeaten away from home. Chelsea had a much easier time trouncing a sorry Atletico Madrid side 4-0 with Ivory Coast striker Salomon Kalou scoring a double and Frank Lampard getting another.

Real’s coach Manuel Pellegrini gracefully played down the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo as a reason for the defeat to Milan. “We had the game under control and it all changed suddenly in a few minutes,” said Pellegrini.

“We need our best players and Cristiano (Ronaldo) is one of them but we didn’t lose because he wasn’t playing. We lost because we made defensive mistakes and got punished by an experienced Milan team.” For Milan’s coach Leonardo it was a welcome filip in what has been a tough season thus far.

“Of course I am really happy,” said the former Brazilian international midfielder. It is highly satisfying for me to find solutions for the way we are playing on the pitch.” — AFP

Baljit eyeing comeback at CWG

New Delhi, October 22
He was India’s first-choice hockey goalkeeper before a freak eye injury jeopardised his career, but a determined Baljit Singh is in no mood to give up and is eyeing next year’s Commonwealth Games here to stage his comeback in the national team. Having regained partial vision in his injured right eye after three surgeries in Alabama, United States, Baljit returned home earlier this month.

He said even though not being able to play in the World Cup in February-March next year hurts him, he has already started his preparations for the Delhi Games. “I know recovering before the World Cup is impossible as the doctors said it will take me 4-5 months more to get back full vision but I am focussing on next year’s Commonwealth Games. I hope by then I will be fit to represent India again,” Baljit said in an interview.

“My eye is now better than before. There is considerable improvement but not that much to play hockey again. The doctors said it will take another 4-5 months for my eye to recover fully, but I have already started light practice and fitness etc,” he said.

Baljit was sent to the US in August after a golf ball, with which he was practising in a camp in Pune, sneaked through his helmet’s visor and damaged his right eye. The young custodian said the career-threatening mishap is still fresh in his mind but it can never overpower his determination to wear India colours again. — PTI
