Dravid dropped; Sehwag, Yuvraj back
* UP pacer Sudeep Tyagi lone new face * Munaf, Ravindra Jadeja in * RP, Yousuf Pathan left out
Chennai, October 15 Dravid, who was surprisingly named in India’s Champions Trophy squad, failed to find favour with the selectors, who have decided to persist with young right-hander Virat Kohli. Kohli had been inducted in the Champions Trophy squad after Yuvraj was forced out due to a finger injury. In an apparent fallout of India’s Champions Trophy debacle, out of form all-rounder Yusuf Pathan and pacer R P Singh were dropped from the squad announced by the BCCI after a meeting of its selection panel here. Wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik and young all-rounder Abhishek Nayar were also dropped. Rookie Uttar Pradesh pacer Sudeep Tyagi was the lone new face in the squad, which marked the return of another fast bowler Munaf Patel and young all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Tyagi has played 16 first-class match for Uttar Pradesh and has taken 57 wickets at an average of 25.73. Meanwhile, the BCCI said Yuvraj, who is still recuperating from a fractured finger, will be completely fit by October 28 for the second one-dayer in Nagpur and might as well be available for the first one-dayer on October 25 in Vadodara. “Selectors are advised that Yuvraj would definitely be fit to play on October 28. It is possible that he may be able to play the first match as well,” BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said in a statement. “The decision on the playing XI for the first match will be made based on Yuvraj’s fitness on October 25,” he added. Sehwag, meanwhile, has already recovered from his shoulder injury and is currently playing in the Champions League Twenty20. The spin combination of Harbhajan Singh and Amit Mishra have retained their place in the side along with in-form fast bowler Ashish Nehra. The Squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (C), Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Virat Kohli, Praveen Kumar, Amit Mishra, Ashish Nehra, Suresh Raina, Ishant Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Munaf Patel, Sudeep Tyagi.

Bangalore, October 15 Having restricted the hosts to a modest 127 for six in the League B opener, the Victorians rode on cameos from Rob Quiney, Brad Hodge, Aiden Blizzard and David Hussey to cruise to 133 for three and complete a facile win with 4.1 overs to spare.
Earlier, Manish Pandey briefly grabbed the Victorian attack by the scruff of its neck before McDonald intervened and the fumbling hosts needed a propping-up act from Rahul Dravid to reach a competitive total. The meagreness of the total and the turn on offer prompted Anil Kumble to open the attack himself but the early wickets he was desperately looking for never actually came. On the contrary, Quiney added 48 runs with Hodge and 47 with Blizzard to lay the perfect foundation for a successful chase and Hussey completed the job hitting three sixes off the 15th over sent down by Kumble. — PTI Scoreboard Royal Challengers Bangalore Pandey c & b McDonald 39(28) Uthappa b McKay 13(12) Dravid lbw b McDonald 33(35) Kohli c Blizzard b McDonald 6(8) Taylor lbw b McDonald 2 (7) Boucher c Blizzard b McKay 5(12) Akhil not out 18(13) der Merwe not out 3(6) Extras (b 1, lb 6, nb 1) 8 Total (6 wickets; 20 overs) 127 FoWs: 1-39, 2-60, 3-76, 4-79, 5-99, 6-104. Somerset take on Diamond Eagles
Hyderabad, October 15 Somerset are lucky to be in the Super Eight as they would have been shown the door had Deccan not lost by three runs against Trinidad last night as Adam Gilchrist’s men enjoyed a better net run rate. The Eagles, on the other hand, were outplayed by New South Wales in their opening match before bouncing back to beat Sussex Sharks in a must-win match to take the last available berth in the super-eight stage from their group. Both the teams lack big names and in Somerset’s case, their tail-enders did better than the top-order batsmen, clinching the last-ball thriller against
Deccan. A prolific Test opener, Langer has struggled to find form in Twenty20 and has come a cropper so far. Their only other well-known batting face, retired England opener Marcus Trescothick is also yet to make any substantial contribution in the tournament. Among the bowlers, pacer Alfonso Thomas played the
all-rounder’s role in the win against Deccan but apart from him, the team has not yet found any bowler capable enough of either containing or taking wickets. Batting has been Eagles problem too and though captain Boeta Dippenaar had blamed it on a treacherous Feroze Shah Kotal track in the group stage matches, he would have no such excuse on the batting-friendly wicket here. Eagles don’t have any big names in the line-up either and they are yet to click as a unit. The batting line-up hasn’t made much of an impression although Ryan McLaren did play a good knock against Trinidad and Tobago.

C’wealth Games: IOA seeks removal of CEO Hooper
New Delhi, October 15 The Organising Committee also decided to accept the resignation of sports manager (shooting) Graeme Hudson with immediate effect. The executive council meeting of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), held at the Olympic Bhawan, fully backed its president Suresh Kalmadi to take all the “necessary steps” to ensure the successful conduct of the Commonwealth Games. The executive committee rejected the Commonwealth Games Federation’s (CGF) proposal of an independent monitoring panel to oversee the preparations and demanded the sacking of Chief Executive Officer Mike Hooper of New Zealand. The IOA was against the formation of an independent technical review panel as it did not want “multiplicity of such agencies”. The IOA instead recommended that the organising committee ask the CGF to stregthen the co-ordination commission (CoCom) by adding technical experts to it so that the authority of the CoCom was not diluted. Kalmadi said Mike Hooper has been of no use. “We have asked the CGF to replace him immediately and in his place send somebody who can be useful to us”, Kalmadi added. IOA secretary-general Randhir Singh, who is also the secretary general of the Olympic Council of Asia, expressed his surprise over CGF’s decision to form a technical panel. “The CGF should have more faith in the co-ordination commission because in every big event starting from Olympics to the Asian Games, it is the co-ordination commission that comes and checks and asks for reports from the organising committee”, Randhir, who is also a member of the International Olympic Committee, explained. Kalmadi said the Organising Committee had no intention of locking horns with the CGF and welcomed its president Mike Fennell’s suggestions. |
Argentina beat Uruguay 1-0
Buenos Aires, October 15 Substitute Mario Bolatti stabbed home the winner in the 85th minute to seal the fourth automatic spot for Argentina, who had been in danger of missing out on the finals after a rollercoaster year under Maradona’s leadership. Maradona, who has used more than 70 players in his time in charge, wept and hugged his coaching staff and insulted the media after Argentina joined Brazil, Chile and Paraguay as South America’s representatives in South Africa next year. Ecuador were the other team who went into Wednesday’s matches with a realistic chance of qualifying but their hopes were killed off with a 1-0 defeat in Chile. Humberto Suazo, the competition’s leading scorer, scored the winner with his 10th goal of the campaign to leave Ecuador sixth with 23 points, one behind Uruguay. Brazil finished top of the group with 34 points but completed their campaign with a lacklustre goalless draw at home to Venezuela in Campo Grande - the first time they have failed to beat their northern neighbours in 19 competitive internationals. “I have a memory, for those who didn’t believe in this team and those who treated me like dirt,” Maradona said in a post-match news conference peppered with insults at the media.

Venkatesh Prasad, Robin Singh sacked
New Delhi, October 15 Although the Board’s decision to sack them came as a surprise, both Prasad and Singh were under the scanner after India’s dismal show in the Twenty20 World Cup and last month’s
Champions Trophy. Top Indian bowlers like Ishant Sharma and R P Singh have struggled for form for long spells with the latter being dropped from the ODI squad for the seven-match ODI series against Australia today. Even a proven match-winner like off-spinner Harbhajan Singh was struggling in the Champions
Trophy. Despite being a top-notch fielder in his own playing days, Singh hasn’t managed to raise the team’s standard since taking over. Barring exceptions like Yuvraj Singh, Indian players have been quite ordinary, inviting open criticism from captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on
several occasions. Several former players have also questioned Prasad and Singh’s contribution to the team’s cause, saying the standard has remained as bad as it was before their appointment. The duo was appointed after India’s 2007 one-day World Cup debacle and didn’t have any contract with the Board.

No WC matches in Jaipur
Jaipur, October 15 The BCCI had earlier shifted India-Australia ODI and India-Sri Lanka ODI from Jaipur due to the ongoing feud in the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA). This is for the first time that in a World Cup being played in India, Jaipur would not get an opportunity to host even a single ODI. In 1987 World Cup, the city hosted the match between England and West Indies, while in 1997 World Cup the Australia-West India match was played here. Over the years, the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Stadium, Jaipur has gained popularity as a cricket venue. The SMS stadium hosted 6 Champions Trophy matches in 2006 and 7 T-20 matches in IPL’s inaugural season. |
