Two-day seminar
: The two-day orientation programme sponsored by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for PG teachers of the schools of Panchkula zone kick started here at the LRS DAV Senior Secondary School with lighting of lamp by the chairman Dev Mittar Ahuja and visiting academicians from different towns. They welcomed the key speaker Sonika Narang, head of the computer education at the DAV College here. Anuj Sharma of Jalandhar and Viplesh Bhadoo are participating as resource persons, principal Kusum Khungar informed.

Tributes paid to Rinwa: Rich tributes were paid to Hazari Lal Rinwa, a close associate of octogenarian saint Swami Keshwa Nand, on his 13th death anniversary. Former MLAs Dr M. Rinwa and HR Arya were joined by the city Congress president BL Nagpal, councillor Vimal Thathai, SK Rinwa president of Sahitya Sadan, Dr S. Watts in-charge Swami Keshwa Nand Ayurvedic Hospital and other eminent citizens.

Attendance machine: Having already come to limelight with commissioning of the first ISO-9001 certified Suvidha Centre in the state, the sub-divisional administrative complex here, had another first fingerprint time-attendance machine in the district Ferozepur, which was installed on Wednesday to record attendance of the staff attached to the sub-divisional magistrate and tehsildar of the revenue department.

Seminar held
: A seminar based on the Right to Information Act was held at the SD College Barnala on Wednesday to create awareness among the students. S. Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, general secretary Shiromni Akali Dal was the chief guest on this occasion. Prof Rajesh Gupta and Prof Ritu Sharma presented key-note papers. Dr ML Bansal, principal SD College presented vote of thanks.

5 pc DA for employees:
The Punjab government has released an instalment of DA to its employees and pensioners with effect from July 1, 2009, at the rate of 5 per cent. The arrears up to December 2009 will be deposited in the GPF of the employees. DA will be paid in cash with effect from January 2010. This was stated here on Wednesday by a government spokesman.

Jai Kishan is new DRME: TB and Chest Hospital head, Patiala, and director STDC, Punjab, Dr Jai Kishan has been appointed as regular Director of Research and Medical Education (DRME) by the Punjab government here on Wednesday with immediate effect. Till date, he was discharging his duties as the officiating DRME.

Bus service
: Following persistent demand, bus service between Ferozepur Cantt and the city will begin from October 19 on a trial basis. It can be started on a regular basis provided the response is good, DC KK Yadav said. Yadav said the bus will start from the city bus stand and then pass through Udham Singh Chowk, Delhi Gate, Baghdadai Gate, Zira Gate, Makhu Gate, Bansi Gate, Adda Khai, Multani Gate and reach the cantonment bus stand through border road via Shershahwali Chowk.

Roko cancer drive:
“Roko Cancer Organisation”, which had started a campaign to diagnose the cancer patients in Mansa, concluded its chain of camps on Wednesday. The last camp was organised at the Nangal Kalan on Wednesday. During this campaign, women were examined to diagnose breast cancer. The campaign was launched under the 'Nanhi Chaan' programme of Harsimrat Kaur Badal MP Bathinda.

Jammu
100 players to take part in national games
: The Jammu and Kashmir Olympic Association will send a contingent of nearly 100 sportspersons to take part in the 34th National Games being hosted by the Jharkhand Olympic Association from November 21 to December 5 at Ranchi, Dhanbad and Jamshedpur. The players are likely to take part in various events like athletics, boxing, canoing kayaking, fencing, wrestling, gymnastics, handball and shooting. The selection trail for the players will start from third week of October for the 21 day-long-training that is scheduled to start on October 28.

Pangotra appointed Asst Solicitor General: The President, Pratibha Devisingh Patil, has appointed advocate Kuldeep Kumar Pangotra as the Assistant Solicitor General of India for handling the Central government cases in the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. According to the order of the Ministry of Law and Justice of October 6, 2009, received today in the High Court, the engagement of Pangotra would be governed by the terms and conditions for a period of three years or till further orders.

Course for farm graduates: A training course on agri-clinics and agri-business was organised by the Indian Society of Agribusiness Professional (ISAP) and the National Institute of Agriculture here on Tuesday for the fresh batch of trainees. The two-month-long training programme was inaugurated at its regional office here by chief general manager NABARD ML Sukhdeve. The programme will encourage agriculture and allied sector graduates to set up agri-clinics and agri-business centres for employment generation to provide quality extension services to the farmers.

Sikh body praises DIG’s role: The Nirbhow Nirvair Organisation, Jammu and Kashmir, has appreciated the move of Jammu DIG, Kathua range, Farooq Khan of having formed a special investigation team to inquire into the murder of Amandeep Singh. “Some people are coming forward to confront the police that clearly shows that those who were making unnecessary remarks against the SIT were also involved in the case as they are the business associates of Nagar Singh,” Harjeet Singh, president of the Nirbhow Nirvair Organisation, said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.

Lt-Gen Jaswal meets CM: Lt-Gen BS Jaswal, GoC, Northern Command, on Tuesday called on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and remained with him for about half an hour. Various issues pertaining to the security and development were discussed in the meeting, an official spokesman said.

Pak members meet Mirwaiz: A group of participants of Intra-Kashmir Conference from Pakistan and PoK, held here recently, met Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at his residence on Monday. The participants included Aziz Ahmad Khan, former Pakistan High Commissioner to India, and Himayun Khan, former foreign secretary of Pakistan. Mirwaiz, according to a spokesman of the APHC, apprised the visiting members of his recent visit to New York to attend the OIC Foreign Ministers Conference and the prevalent situation in Kashmir.

Seminar on astronomy
: A district level seminar for teachers on the topic “Astronomy Past and Future” was held at Girls Higher Secondary School, Udhampur by the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), Udhampur, on Tuesday. Principal, DIET, Gurcharan Singh distributed prizes to winners. Eleven teachers from various zones participated in the seminar to mark the International year for Astronomy. Saguna Khajuria of City High School, Udhampur, and Pawan Kumar of Secondary School, Chenani, bagged first and second prizes, respectively, while Arti Devi from GGHS, Udhampur, and Renu Bala of GHS, Kawa, shared the third prize.

Special lecture series held: As part of special lecture series organised by the College of Management of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University (SMVDU). Dalip Kumar from the National Council for Applied Economic Research, New Delhi, on Tuesday addressed budding managers of the college. Kumar highlighted the status and threats faced by higher educational institutions in the country. Students actively participated in the session and were informed about the working of the council and opportunities available there with regard to jobs and placements.

2 killed in mishap: Two persons were killed when a minibus fell into a deep gorge near Chatroo in Kishtwar district on Tuesday. The ill-fated minibus bearing registration number 2585-JK06 was on its way to Chatroo to pick up passengers. According to reports, only driver and conductors were travelling in the vehicle when it fell into the gorge. The deceased had been identified as Sajjad Hussain and Yasir Ali Naik of Pastarkot, Kishtwar.

Body of pilgrim found: The police constituted a special team to investigate the death of a pilgrim whose decomposed body has been found at Ardhkumbhari on the track of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine. The deceased has been identified as Pawan Kumar of Devgunj, Haryana. According to the police, some sweepers, who were cleaning the track to the cave shrine, found the body from a gorge nearby. A case has been registered.
