180-quintal spurious khoya seized
Patiala, September 23 The amount of the seized khoya and other items is in excess of lakhs. The raids were carried out in the morning and were in progress by the time of filing this report. The police has also arrested the owners of the two cold stores. According to the senior police officials, preliminary investigations revealed that more than three dozen sweet shop owners are likely to be involved in the practice of purchasing spurious khoya and other foodstuff. Highly placed sources in the police department revealed that top brass of the Patiala police had got a tip-off about the spurious khoya being stored in the cold stores of Patiala. On the directions of the Patiala SSP Arpit Shukla, raids were planned and operation was initiated this morning. The first seizure was made by the team led by DSP (rural) Davinder Singh Dhuri, along with the officials of the health department. Raids were conducted at the Mehta Cold Stores around 11 am and 100 quintal of spurious khoya, worth Rs 15 lakh, was seized. Cops then sealed the store and took the khoya in its possession. Sources in the police department revealed that around 43 sweet shop owners were supposed to use the adulterated khoya during the Dussehra and Diwali season. Owner of the Mehta Store, Harmohan Singh, has been arrested and a case under Sections 272, 273, 420 and 120-B of the IPC, Section 7 of the Essential Commodities Act and Section 16 of Food Adulteration Act, 1954, has been registered. Thereafter, a team led by Deputy Director Dairy Development Ashok Rauni conducted raids at the Shiva Cold Store situated at Focal Point on the outskirts of Tripri. The officials seized 30 drums of spurious rasgullas and 80 quintals of khoya, affected with fungus. The tin and plastic containers containing adulterated sweets were sealed by the team. The officials told The Tribune that the team recovered dead insects in the containers and the condition of the place was so bad that fungus had grown up on all the containers. The dairy development department took the samples from there and the owner of the Shiva Cold Store, Swaran Singh, has also been arrested. In the third raid, officials of the Civil Surgeon office raided a shop at Mathura Colony and recovered 15,000 litre of adulterated tomato sauce of Aval brand. As per the cops, shop owner Pritpal Singh used to purchase rotten tomatoes and used various harmful chemicals for manufacturing the sauce. The owner was also using carrot and vegetable pulps in the sauce. Talking to The Tribune, SSP Shukla said there was involvement of large number of the sweet shop owners of Patiala in this entire matter. “We are preparing the lists of the erring shopkeepers and will initiate strict action against them,” he added. |

Clerk suspended for taking bribe
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 23 As many as 52 beneficiaries of villages, falling under Khamano block, failed to get their pension and approached the officials concerned. “Initially, we thought that pension was delayed by government. When we enquired from higher officials, they looked into the matter,” said Angrez, one of the relative of a beneficiary in Khamano. These beneficiaries, from various villages of the block, get Rs 2,500 per month from Punjab government. Khamano SDM Inderjit Kaur after scrutinising the record, found that only Rs 11,000 were lying in the account and nearly Rs 1.30 lakh were missing. She further looked into the matter and also learnt that the entire money was taken away by a clerk, Harpal Singh, by forging signatures of the SDM. Only Rs 11,000 were left in the account of the department and account was sealed after detection of usurping of money by the clerk. Department officials said the entire money was misappropriated within ten days. Though the clerk initially misappropriated pension for three months, but he later on, deposited the amount of two months, said officials. The SDM, then, brought the matter into the notice of Deputy Commissioner Yashvir Mahajan, who ordered immediate suspension of clerk. The Deputy Commissioner also marked a detailed enquiry to District Revenue Officer in this regard. Deputy Commissioner said the clerk had been placed under suspension since yesterday and his working for the past five years would be scrutinised. Further action would be initiated against him after the completion of enquiry, he said. Meanwhile, Manjit Kaur, chairperson of the Human Rights Manch at the block, demanded a detailed enquiry and registration of case against the culprits. She said this was second such incident in the department during the past one and half years. Earlier, an employee was caught taking bribe in this department around one year ago. |

Refresher course on Indian democracy
Patiala, September 23 Punjabi University Registrar, Dr SS Khera, was the chief guest. He highlighted the importance of acquiring new skills by teaching fraternity. He said the current situation was characterised by an unprecedented expansion of knowledge. He said a teacher always remained a learner and the teachers had a special responsibility to prepare young generations in various fields through the optimal use of information and knowledge resources. He further said the role had become more challenging in the present context in which the world had turned into a global village. He further shared his worry of meager ratio of 7 per cent of youth joining the higher education. He further emphasised on the need to introduce the process of teacher evaluation by the students of the institutes concerned. Dr Jagroop Kaur, coordinator of the refresher course, stated that in these three-week programme, the course had dealt along with major theme of democracy, the sub-themes of governance, socio-economic development, crisis in policy making, power politics, political competition, the RTI Act 2005, caste, untouchability, class and democracy, market democracy. The issue of women empowerment has also been discussed with specific emphasis. |

Fatehgarh Sahib to purchase 4.84 lakh mt of paddy
Fatehgarh Sahib,
September 23 A meeting of officials of the procuring agencies was held at the district administrative complex after taking stock of various grain markets by the Deputy Commissioner. He said paddy procuring by the government would begin from October 1. To avoid any problems as many as 33 purchase centres have been setup in the district. Government purchasing agencies, including FCI, Punjab Agro, Markfed, Punsup, Warehouse and PUngrane, would participate in the purchase of paddy in this season, said the Deputy Commissioner. He instructed officials of the agencies to appoint purchase officers at purchase centres of the district till September 30. |

200 donate blood
Fatehgarh Sahib, September 23 He said donating blood was of utmost relevance in all religions of the world as it helped save precious lives. He said the college was among the best technical institutions of the country in terms of academics, sports and co-curricular activities. Principal of the college Dr MS Grewal thanked the NSS unit of college for bringing students for the blood donation camp. More than 200 students donated their blood. Govt employees hold rally
Patiala, September 23 President of the union Darshan Singh Labana said the government had done injustice to the class IV employees by giving all monetary benefits of the Fifth Pay Commission to the officials only. Employees of various boards and corporations had also been left in disarray by not extending benefits of the pay commission to them. Leaders of the union demanded benefits of the pay commisssion for the employees. It also demanded lifting of ban on recruitment and regularisation of the services of daily wage, part-time and work charge employees. |

Residents forced to consume muddy water
Mohali, September 23 They said this had created a fear of the spread of water-borne diseases among residents. Muddy water was supplied once in a while earlier as well but not for such a long period stretching over
four days. Ajit Kaur, a resident of Phase II, said her water filter was not functioning properly due to the mud being supplied with water. Complaints have also been received from Phases I, IV, V, IX, X and Sector 71. Inderjit Singh Kang, executive engineer of the Water Supply and Sanitation Wing, said the problem had arisen because the turbidity level in the canal water being supplied from Kajauli had gone up but the alum dose had now been re-adjusted, which would help in improving the quality of water. |

Five arrested for power theft
Chandigarh, September 23 The police said the raids were conducted on a tip-off given by the UT home secretary-cum-chief vigilance officer, Ram Niwas, who directed his officials to conduct surprise checks. The vigilance teams, along with Dharam Singh, SDE, UT administration, conducted the raids last night on Rajdhani and Bedi taxi stands in Sectors 61 and 52, respectively. At Rajdhani taxi stand, the sleuths found Harnek Singh of Banur and Gurdeep Singh of Ropar using electricity connection illegally through “kundi”. A case was registered on a complaint lodged by Dharam Singh under provisions of the Indian Penal Code and Electricity Act. The team conducted a raid on Bedi Taxi stand in Sector 52 for similar offence. Ranjodh Singh, Rajesh Kumar and Raj Kumar Bedi of Phase VII, Mohali, who were present at the taxi stand, were arrested. A separate case has been registered against them. |

Liquor seized from confectionery shop
Zirakpur, September 23 Officials got information that the accused was selling liquor illegally from his shop Chauhan Confectionery at Lohgarh. An excise team raided the shop and seized five cartons from Indica car belonging to the accused and three cases of English liquor bearing the marking “For sale in Chandigarh” from the shop. Low price of liquor in Chandigarh has been stated to be the reason of liquor being smuggled to Punjab, affecting revenue of the Excise Department. |

Panchkula, September 23 Besides these two Asian Tour stars, others to be seen in action will be second and third ranked PGTI stars Ashok Kumar and Mukesh Kumar, respectively, who will rub shoulders with more than 120 pro-golf icons of the country. They will tee off in the major PGTI event to be held for the second successive year in Panchkula. The Chandigarh challenge will be led by Harendra Gupta, Ranjit Singh and seasoned Harmeet Kahlon. Leading the challenge among the six amateurs will be Angad Cheema of Chandigarh. The Panchkula Greens have been spruced up for the big event with the turf playing and holding well as was amply demonstrated in the pro-am event today. Arrangements for ODI reviewed
Mohali, September 23 PCA president IS Bindra informed the officials about the formulation of various sub-committees for the smooth conduct of the upcoming international match. The committee also announced the price of tickets, AC lounge Rs 10,000 with hospitality; terrace block Rs 5,000 with hospitality; VIP block Rs 1,000; members’ block Rs 500 (one); chair block Rs 300 and student block Rs 100. Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal presiding over the meeting pointed out that the cricket had to be taken to remote villages in order to popularise the game amongst the village
youth. Badal asked the PCA officials to make special arrangements for enabling over 2,000 students from the remote villages, especially the villages located near the Indo-Pak border, to witness the importance of the match. In his response, IS Bindra assured that the PCA would present a cricket kit, one for each school, as memento so that the students could do cricket practice after returning to their respective
villages. Badal also suggested that the PCA should also try to organise state
IPL-pattern matches with different district teams supported by various corporate sponsors.
Bindra informed that this concept was quite successful in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh and could be successfully replicated in Punjab. Badal also sought the services of the PCA in laying the blue print for organising the IPL for the games of kabaddi and hockey also. |

Raninder hat-trick shapes IAF win
Chandigarh, September 23 The EME players started the match on an aggressive note. Gurvinder Singh turned a penalty corner in their favour and scored a goal in the fifth minute of the match. Raninder Singh opened the account for the IAF in the 18th minute, when he scored a goal through a penalty corner to put the IAF at par with the EME. Raninder scored his second goal of the match in the 32nd minute to put the IAF into lead and then scored his third goal of the match in the 52nd minute to hand the IAF, a 3-0 win, in the match. In the second match of the day, the Army-XI defeated the PNB by 4-2. Yudhveer opened the account for the PNB in the eighth minute of the play before Bandroo scored the equaliser for the Army-XI in the 20th minute. Varun Kumar extended the lead for Army-XI in the 31st minute, when he scored the second goal for the Army-XI through a penalty corner. Daman scored the equaliser goal for the PNB in the 33rd minute. Anelka hit the board in the 45th minute before scoring another goal in the 52nd minute to hand the Army XI, a 4-2 win. In the third match of the day, the Namdhari-XI got a 4-1 win over the Ropar Hawks. Gurvinder opened the account for the Namdhari-XI in the third minute of the match before Kulbir Singh scored the equaliser for the Ropar Hawks in the 16th minute. Then, Gurbax Singh put the Namdhari-XI into lead again and scored the second goal for the Namdhari-XI two minutes later. Ashok’s team win pro-am title
Panchkula, September 23 Other members of the team comprised of Lt Gen YK Jain, MP Singh and Ramesh Krishnan. Finishing second at 56 was Vinod Kumar and his team comprising Darvesh Kumar, Pankaj Chanana and Col GS Ahlawat. Sixty amateurs teed off along with some top professional golfers of the country. The competition was played in the team scramble format where the team's best ball was chosen on every shot, including the putting green. After the best ball was chosen, all other players placed their
ball within one scorecard length before continuing play. The prize for the longest drive was bagged by Darvesh, who came up with a 296-yard drive on hole no 8. Lt Gen Y K Jain finished second with a drive of 277 yards. The prize for the closest shot to the pin on hole no 17 was won by
Mann Singh. His shot landed 2.11 metres from the pin. RC Mishra was second as his shot landed 3.30 metre
