New York, September 15 The sixth-seeded del Potro, playing in his first Grand Slam final, had not beaten Federer in their six previous encounters. Federer had won 40 consecutive matches at Flushing Meadows. He was seeking to become the first man since Bill Tilden in 1920-25 to win the American championship six straight times and the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to win three straight majors in a season. Del Potro dominated No. 3 Rafael Nadal in the semifinals in straight sets. Normally so cool, so consistent, so in control of his emotions and his matches, Federer let the title slip from his grasp. Two points from victory against inexperienced, unheralded del Potro, two points from a record-extending 16th Grand Slam overall, Federer, quite simply, fell apart. He railed at the chair umpire. His legs grew weary. His double-faults mounted. He could not figure out a way to stop the 6-foot-6 del Potro from pounding forehand after forehand past him. In a result as surprising for who lost as how it happened, del Potro came back to win his first Grand Slam. “Can’t have them all,” Federer said. He had won 33 of his previous 34 Grand Slam matches. And he has made the final at 17 of the past 18 Grand Slam tournaments, 21 overall. After handing Nadal the most lopsided loss of his Grand Slam career in the semifinals on Sunday, del Potro came back the next day and rattled Federer. Del Potro is the first man from Argentina to win the US Open since Guillermo Vilas in 1977. Vilas was in the stands yesterday, sitting one row behind actor Jack Nicklaus. In other results, Venus and Serena Williams won the U.S. Open women’s doubles crown on Monday with a dominating 6-2, 6-2 victory over top seeds Cara Black and Liezel Huber. The Williams sisters never lost serve in the 89-minute match in winning their second Open doubles title, and third grand slam crown of the year after doubles triumphs at the Australian Open and Wimbledon. “I have a great partner. I believe in her just as much as I believe in myself,” Venus said in a courtside interview. “There’s nothing like having that on the court.” Black, from Zimbabwe, and her American partner played three three-set matches en route to the final. “We had great opponents today,” said Venus. “Liezel and Cara, they played so well, survived so many close matches to get here. And they truly are the number one, day in and out on the tour.” Serena was playing one day after being fined $10,000 for an expletive-laced rant at a lineswoman, and another $500 for racket abuse during her semifinal singles match against Kim Clijsters on Saturday.

Gill summons Kalmadi
New Delhi, September 15 Sources said that both Suresh Kalmadi and Indian Olympic Association Secretary General Randhir Singh met the minister who is also set to meet Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to discuss the issue. “Fennell’s letter to the Organising Committee members have been forwarded to the Sports Secretary who studied it and briefed the Minister. The Minister is himself in touch with the highest echelon in the government, as he normally does in such matters,” the source said. Fennell was miffed with the pace of the capital’s preparation for the October 3-14 multi-discipline event and fears it is heading for “partial failure” unless the organisers pull up their socks and get some experienced foreign experts on board. The CGF chief was so angry that he asked Kalmadi to fix a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh so that Fennell could explain him the seriousness of the issue. Clearly embarrassed after Fennell’s strongly-worded mail found its way to the media, both Kalmadi and Dikshit have sought to dispel the fears and assured every thing would be put in place well before the Games. Union Urban Development Minister S Jaipal Reddy also assured that things were pretty much under control.
