Admn bends rules to adjust DPI’s wife

In gross violation of its own deputation policy, the UT administration has apparently bent all rules to get Amandeep Kaur, wife of DPI (S) Samwartak Singh, posted on deputation in the Government College for Girls, Sector 42, from her prior posting as a lecturer in Patiala.

‘Killing fields’ hound villagers
Bacha Singh Panchkula, September 14
With over 10 deaths in the past couple of years and scores of maimed residents, Mandlai and Bhoor villages, around 15 km from here, can well be called the “killing fields” of Panchkula district.
While there have been no hostilities in the area, residents of these villages are virtually victims of “friendly fire”, dying and getting crippled, thanks to unexploded grenades and mortar shell left around callously by the Army and paramilitary forces, which use the nearby firing ranges.

Beant Singh Assassination
3 more months sought to dispose of case
Chandigarh, September 14
The high-profile Bheora case pertaining to the assassination of former Chief Minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, will take more time before being decided. For the special court conducting the trial, headed by Additional District and Sessions Judge RK Sondhi, moved application today before the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking three months time to dispose of the case.

Scheduled under the shadow of meltdown, the auction of school sites at Panchkula failed to evoke response among the bidders here today. The Haryana Urban Development Authority failed to sell half of the six sites under hammer as none of the 19 bidders came forward to bid for them.

Two killed, one hurt in accidents
Chandigarh, September 14
In two separate hit-and-run mishaps, twseparateo persons were killed here today. Rajinder Kumar, a 52-year-old resident of Dappar village, was killed near the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, here this morning.

UT revises pay scales of daily wage workers

The Chandigarh Administration has decided to revise the pay scales of all daily wage workers in the UT. The decision is consequent upon the grant of revised pay scales to the employees of the Chandigarh Administration.

Three suspected of swine flu

Three more cases of swine flu suspects, including two students from local schools, were reported here today. Nodal officer HC Gera said the two Class VI students, who tested positive for swine flu, were studying in Bhavan Vidyalaya, Sector 27, and Delhi Public School, Sector 40.

Rickshaw-puller found dead

Harcharan Singh, a rickshaw-puller of Mullanpur village, was found dead from Sector 25 here today. The police said he was a drunk and due to heavy consumption of liquor, he died.

The students expressed their disappointment over the lack of interest shown by the college authorities in the past over the sorry state of hostel infrastructure and the mess food in two boys’ hostel and one girls’ hostel attached to the college.

Youth commits suicide

Bhagh Singh (30), a resident of Kheri Bhai Ki village, today reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a fan’s hook. He tied a piece of cloth around his neck and hanged with the fan’s hook.

In two different incidents, two persons of Pipliwala town near Mani Majra were arrested yesterday as 1.1 kg opium had been recovered from their possession.
