Traffic remains suspended

Traffic on Pinjore - Sarahan road, which was likely to start today, could not be resumed even on the third consecutive day. Thousands of commuters were forced to use Amaravati Enclave link road to reach National Highway -22.

The Pinjore - Mallah road that connects Pinjore with more than 40 villages of Raitan area is a shortcut to reach Sarahan. Commuters, including party workers of local INLD have condemned the working of PWD department for delaying the maintenance work.

They alleged that closing the Pinjore - Mallah road has caused inconvenience to thousands of commuters.

Inferior quality material was being used for the maintenance work, they alleged and urged the authorities concerned to take a serious note.

One injured while crossing rly tracks

Fatehgarh Sahib, September 14
A resident of Mandi Gobindgarh received serious injuries while crossing railway lines without following traffic rules. Instead of waiting for the approaching train, the man, on a bike, decided to cross railway lines by ignoring railway barriers.

Though he crossed the barrier, he came in contact with the speeding passenger train.

The injured has been identified as Ravinder Kumar, a resident of New Shashtri Nagar.

He was rushed to the Civil Hospital, Mandi Gobindgarh, from where he was referred to Chandigarh in view of serious injuries. The Government Railway Police has registered a case.

Youth commits suicide

Bhagh Singh (30), a resident of Kheri Bhai Ki village, today reportedly committed suicide by hanging himself with a fan’s hook. He tied a piece of cloth around his neck and hanged with the fan’s hook.

He was married and had a small kid. His wife noticed the body lying in the room and informed the family members who further informed the police.

The police said Bhagh Singh was under depression. Sources said he had some scuffle in the village and his family members reached on a compromise, which he objected to.

The police had registered a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.

Nabbing of five armed youths
Accused sent to police remand

Five accused who were arrested yesterday for planning a robbery in Zirakpur were produced in the Dera Bassi court today from where they had been sent to two days police remand.

However, the police said two other miscreants, Babu Ram and Surinder Singh, who were relatives of the accused, were still absconding and would be arrested soon.

According to public prosecutor HS Rakkar, the arrested accused were produced in the court and sent to the police remand for two days.

Yesterday, the CIA wing of the district police had arrested the youths, who were planning a robbery, from their rented accommodation in Sharma Estate, Sigma City, Zirakpur. The police recovered two .32 bore revolvers, eight live cartridges, an Alto (PB-12-E-4869), a motorcycle and a stolen Scorpio from 
their possession.

The police said Karan Sharma, who was injured during the raid, had been referred to the Civil Hospital, Mohali, for treatment. Gagan Deep Singh and Varinder Pal Singh were booked by the police under the Arms Act. They had criminal background and around seven criminal cases had been registered against them with the Barnala police station.

SP(D) RK Bakshi said the accused had stolen the Mahindra Scorpio (PB-12-H-9683) from Shimla. They hired the vehicle from a Sohana resident on August 29. A case has been already registered with the Shimla police.

Man booked in hit-&-run case

The local police has booked the driver of a vehicle bearing a Himachal Pardesh registration number in a hit-and-run case following a complaint by Jai Pal, a resident of Sector 26.

He had alleged that the car hit his scooter (CH 01 H 0731) at Mani Majra yesterday and sped away.

The complainant was injured and admitted to the Government Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32.

A case under Sections 279 and 337 of the IPC has been registered at the Mani Majra police station.

In another incident, Anuj Kumar of Sector 45 filed a complaint with the police that Ram Jivan of Jaipur a truck (HR 47 K 7257) into his water tanker (HR 99 CP 5943) near Hallo Majra chowk yesterday. A case under Sections 279, 337 and 427 of the IPC has been registered at the police station-31.

2 held with 1.1 kg opium

In two different incidents, two persons of Pipliwala town near Mani Majra were arrested yesterday as 1.1 kg opium had been recovered from their possession.

Mani Majra SHO Partap Singh said after they received a tip-off, a naka was laid, in which the accused Surinder Singh, alias Kala, was arrested with 1 kg opium.

Meanwhile, in another incident, Sham Lal of Pipliwala town was arrested with 100 gram opium.

The police said a case was registered under Section 18 of the NDPS Act against the accused.

SHO further said the accused were produced before a local court and Sham Lal was sent to the judicial remand of 14 days, while Surinder Singh was sent on two days police remand.

One booked for burglary bid at ATM

Mohali, September 14
Jagdeep Kumar Brij, branch manager at State Bank of India, Sector 70, reported to the police that some miscreants had tried to break and open an automatic teller machine (ATM) at the Sector-70 branch.

The police has registered a case against an unidentified person on the complaint of the manager.

The manager said to the police on September 13 around 8.15 am, the building owner had called him and narrated that the ATM had broken. After reaching the spot, he found the ATM machine and CCTV camera broken.

While checking the footages on the camera, it was revealed that the incident occurred between 2.16 am and 2.26 am and the miscreant wore a shirt and a capri.

The police said a case had been registered in this regard and further investigations were on.

Body found

Dera Bassi: A 65-year-old man was found dead under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Bhankarpur village here this morning. The deceased was identified as Mahinder Singh, a resident of Bhankarpur, hailing from Balachaur, Roorkee.

The police said the villagers had informed that Mohinder Singh had been lying dead at his residence, while a woman and a youth who were staying with him, had been absconding from the house.

The investigating officer said the body had been sent for the postmortem at the Dera Bassi civil hospital and investigation had been started.

The overall trophy of the All-India Mahatma Hansraj Aryan Inter-Zonal Tournament for Boys of government-aided schools went to DAV Senior Secondary School, Amritsar, played at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, here today.

The Amritsar lads won nine games, including kho-kho, kabaddi, wrestling, badminton, table tennis, gymnastics, yoga, judo and archery.

After the tournament, students performed bhangra on foot tapping music.

Satluj academy win T20 cricket meet

Satluj Cricket Academy, Panchkula, won the final match of under-14 T-20 cricket tournament played at Kundan Cricket Academy, Sector 46, here. Satluj lads thrashed Holy Child School, Morni, by five wickets in final match.

Holy Child School skipper won the toss and chose to ball first. Karanveer Brar scored 61 not out and became man of the series. While Abhishek supported him by 51 runs. Satluj players put the target of 179.

Nikhil of Holy Child School, Morni, took three wickets in four overs. In reply, Holy Child School, Morni, was all out at 107.

First innings: SCA: 179 for 5 in 20 overs (Karanveer 61 n.o. off 43 balls; Abhishek 51 off 40 balls; Nikhil 4-40-3.

Second innings:

Nomura Cup team in good shape: Jessie

Jessie Grewal, director of the National Golf Academy of India, who honed the skills of the four-member team for the Nomura Cup in Chandigarh, is hopeful of the boys putting up a big challenge at the 24th Asia Pacific Amateur Team Championship commencing tomorrow in South Korea. The championship will conclude on September 18.

Though, he did not say it in as many words, there was a clear hint that they could repeat the feat of 1973, when the Indian team comprising RK Pitambar, Lakshman Singh, PG Sethi and Vikramjit Singh won the Nomura Cup in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Jessie Grewal and Nonita Lal Qureshi, who are accompanying the team as coach, were there on all four days for tuning, putting and driving of the boys.

Spearheading the challenge is Rashid Khan (19). Other members of the Indian team, who went through a grind for four days in Chandigarh comprise Abhishek Jha, Karan Vasudeva and Pawan Kumar.

Rashid Khan and Abhishek Jha are the aggressive players. Karan was also hitting the ball well, said Jessie.

Besides, the CGA Golf Range the Nomura Cup team also had practice sessions at the Chandigarh Golf Club and the Panchkula Golf Club.

Abhishek, who is ranked second on the merit list has played regularly outside the country. For Karan Vasudeva it will be the second time for turning out for the country. But Pawan Kumar will be making his debut for the country.

Member of the victorious Indian team in 1973 Lakshman Singh said, “I have seen most of them play and they are capable of doing well. The competition will be tough and players will need to play well for the team to stand a chance.”

In each round, the total of the three lowest scores by players of each team will constitute the team’s score for the round. The total of the team score over four rounds will be the team’s score for the championship. Besides, the team championship, players will also be vying for individual glory, and player with the lowest 72-hole total will be adjudged the winner.

While Gagan Verma is accompanying the team as the non-playing captain, for the first time, a coach in the form of Nonita Lall Qureshi will be a part of the squad.

Inter-Corporate cricket meet from Sept 27

The Chandigarh Sports Club will organise the MG Cup Inter-Corporate Sector League Cricket Tournament from September 27 and all the matches will be played on Sunday and the gazetted holidays. A total of the eight teams will participate, which will be divided into two pools.

The league matches will be of 25 overs, while semi-finals of 30 overs and the final will be of 35-over duration.

Volleyball trials on Sept 17

The Chandigarh sports department will conduct the selection trials for the Chandigarh civil services volleyball team on September 17 at the Sports Complex, Sector 7, here.

The players will be selected for participation in the All-India Civil Services Volleyball Tournament, to be held at Gandhinagar (Gujarat) from October 6 to 9.

All eligible civil servants may contact volleyball coach Suresh Kumar at Sports Complex, Sector 7.

Students of Gian Sagar college bag top positions

Students of Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital have bagged top positions in the MBBS examination conducted by Baba Farid University of Health Sciences.

Lovepreet Kaur has bagged the first position with 80 per cent marks. Naazbir Kaur has secured the third position, while Ashwant Kaur has bagged the fifth position. Meetan Preet has been placed seventh in the merit list. Dr Sukhwinder Singh, vice-chairman of the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable Trust, said the college laid emphasis on the all-round development of the personality of students.

He said the trust would ensure that the meritorious students of the college were honoured. Saniya Setia of Gian Sagar Dental College and Hospital had secured the first position in the BDS examination with 77 per cent marks. Dr AS Sekhon, principal of the college congratulated students.

27 invited for soccer coaching

The Chandigarh Football Association (CFA) has invited 27 probables for coaching camp to be held at DAV Senior Secondary School, Sector 8, at 4 pm from September 16.

Giving this information here today, CFA general secretary Rakesh Bakshi said the coach at Sports Authority of India Narinder Thapa would impart training.

A city team will be selected during the camp and will participate in the Sub-Junior Girls’ National Football Championship to be held at Haldwani (Uttranchal) from September 27. Players born on or after January 1, 1995, are eligible to take part in Haldwani meet.

The probables were selected during the recently concluded Chandigarh Sub-Junior Girls’ Football Championship for KC Bhargava Trophy on St Stephen's School ground in Sector 45.

Those invited to the camp are: Tanvi Bhargava, Gurleen, Parul, Raman, Awantika, Manpreet, Enayat, Idita, Jaspreet, Sharika, Manya, Sukrit, Ekta, Harnur, Syeba, Ivy, Saumya, Racheal, Vaishali, Siwangi, Taarni, Neeti, Risheeta, Navneet, Pooja, Sucit, Gurpreet and Saira.
