SPO hangs himself to death:
Basant Bahadur, a resident of Darjeeling, who at present was living at police quarters at Gharinda, committed suicide by hanging himself last night. The police initiated action under section 174, CrPC, as preliminary investigations revealed that he took the extreme step of ending his life due to mental depression because of his poor economic conditions. His body was found hanging with a rope in the dilapidated and secluded building of old police quarters near Gharinda police station.

MC president Ambika Khanna along with other councillors visited town markets on Saturday and urged the shopkeepers to remove encroachments.

Sikh bodies pledge for peace:
Blaming the hierarchy of the Punjab Police for raising the bogey of militancy, two Sikh groups, the Khalsa Action Committee (KAC) and the Dal Khalsa, have cautioned the state political leadership against being misled. Chairman, KAC, Bhai Mohkam Singh and spokesperson for the Dal Khalsa Kanwarpal Singh said the stories apprehending “revival of militancy” would generate fear psychosis and were without any basis. Nobody was denying that the police had the role to maintain law and order and keep vigil so that peace was not disturbed. But it should not be at the cost of tarnishing the image of Sikhs, they said.

Ex-Director, Agriculture, Sandhu dead: Sukhjit Singh Sandhu, a former Director of Agriculture, Punjab, and academic, died today evening. He was 82. He headed several state government departments. He was associated with formation of World Bank-aided Punjab seeds projects in the ’80s. He had been MD of the Punjab Land Development and Reclamation Corporation. His contribution to Green Revolution and development of horticulture was acknowledged. He started as lecturer of agricultural sciences in Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) Ludhiana. He was suffering from age-related neurological disorder. He leaves behind wife, a son and a daughter.

‘Akhiyan Udeek Diyan’ crew:
The crew of “Akhiyan Udeek Diyan” film visited SD College here for its promotion. Students of the college thronged the place to watch singer-turned-actor Lakhwinder Wadali (the male lead in the film). Script and dialogue writer Sukhwinder Sukhi and comedian Sanjeev Atri were also present.

Dr Zora Singh honoured:
Dr Zora Singh, founder-cum-chairman of the Desh Bhagat Group of Educational Institutions, Muktsar, has been awarded the Shiksha Bharti Pursakar, which was conferred upon him by the All India Achievers Foundation (AIAF), a New Delhi-based NGO, at a function in New Delhi recently.

SANGRUR
Furniture house gutted: Furniture items worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes at a two-storey furniture house in Lehragaga, about 40 km from here, when a fire broke out in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Three fire tenders had to be called to extinguish the devastating fire. However, the building of the furniture house collapsed almost completely. Sub Fire Officer of the Sangrur Fire Brigade Amar Nath Saini said owners of the furniture house had suffered losses worth Rs 1 crore.

Scholar dead: Pt Babu Ram Shastri, Sanskrit scholar and father of O.P. Sharma, Deputy Director (CM cell) of the Haryana Information and Public Relations Department, died here today after a prolonged illness. Pt Babu Ram Shastri was 87. He is survived by his wife, three sons, three daughters and grandchildren. Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and Commissioner-cum-Director, Information and Public Relations, K.K. Khandelwal have mourned his demise.

Suspect a crime? Dial 1090: The Gurgaon police has started a new toll-free number 1090 for local residents to inform it about any suspicious person or activities noticed by them. Stating this here recently, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Headquarters) Kulvinder Singh said the police had introduced the new number to keep a check on criminals and also involve the public in community policing.

Husband held: The Rohrai police in the district has arrested Gaj Raj in a case of abetment to suicide. His wife, Munni Devi, had committed suicide in Gadla village, 30 km from here. He was produced in a court at Kosli on Saturday, which remanded him in judicial custody. Munni Devi had set herself on fire on August 8 and died at the PGIMS, Rohtak, on August 9. The complaint against Gaj Raj was filed by Munni Devi’s brother, Davender Singh, who alleged that Gaj Raj was a liquor addict who frequently treated Munni Devi cruelly.

Air Marshal’s visit: Air Marshal NAK Browne, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Air Command, IAF, arrived here on Friday on a visit to the Air Force Station. He visited various important places in the station and interacted with station personnel, said a release of the Air Force.

Girl dies in mishap: A four-year-old girl of the local Jawahar Nagar died on Saturday morning in the Delhi branch of Western Yamuna Canal near the Mahra fall when the car in which she was travelling fell into the canal after her mother, Rajesh, lost control over the vehicle. However, Rajesh managed to swim to safety. Rajesh, a lecturer in Law College at BPS Mahila Vishwavidyalaya, Khapur Kalan, along with her daughter, was on the way to the college when the incident took place.

Yamunanagar
3 schoolgirls go missing:
Three Class X girls of a local private school went missing from here this morning. The girls had appeared in a computer examination and left the school around 10 am. DSP Ashok Kumar said the girls had called their parents in the evening informing them that they were at Paonta Sahib. However, when the girls’ mobile calls were traced, it was found that they were in Ambala.

Drum beating to scare wild bear: The Department of Wildlife Protection has initiated necessary measures to scare away the wild bear out of the human habitations by way of drum beating to save lives and property of the people. This was stated by the Minister for Forests, Mian Altaf Ahmad in Legislative Assembly.

GCET to start from next session: The Minister for Higher Education, Abdul Gani Malik, said the government is committed to making Government College of Engineering and Technology (GCET), Jammu fully functional from the next academic session. Replying to a question in the House on Saturday, he said the recruitment rules for gazetted staff of the GCET were under preparation and promotion can be effected when these are finally notified.

Industrial Act doesn’t ‘exist’: There is no such Act called the Industrial Act existing in the state, the Minister for Industries and Commerce, SS Slathia said on Saturday in the Legislative Assembly. He said under the state industrial policy, 2004 incentives are payable to the industrial units subject to the condition that these units provide employment to the local people.
