Tree plantation drive at Khalsa College
Patiala, August 29 It was dedicated to the slogan given by the SGPC “Har vehre hove rukh, ehe Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee da nishana parmukh”. In a drive to tackle the increased deforestation and make the planet green, girls of Khalsa College set an example for the youth by planting saplings. Dr Dharminder Singh Ubha, principal, Khalsa College, Patiala, while addressing college girls said planting the saplings translates into enhanced will power, initiative and wisdom of female power of the country. 3 convicted of culpable homicide
Chandigarh, August 29 The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Raj Rahul Garg today held Charanjeet Singh, Lakhbir Singh and Sukhbir Kaur guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Though initially a case of murder under Section 302 of the IPC was registered, but the accused have been convicted under Sections 304 and 323 of the IPC. The quantum of sentence would be pronounced on August 31. The deceased, Amrik Singh, a resident of Dhanas, used to visit the house of Kamaljit Kaur. She was working as a music and dance teacher and Amrik Singh, a bhangra artiste, used to visit her house for the past many months. This was objected by his family, which often led to quarrels. On September 13, when Amrik visited her house, Lakhbir Singh, a resident of SCF 2, Panjab University, and Charanjit Singh, a resident of Barwala, reached her house and started thrashing Amrik. The duo was brothers-in-law of the deceased. Amrik was rushed to the PGI where he died. It was stated that the deceased was a heart patient. |

Man acquitted in robbery case
Panchkula, August 29 The main accused in the case has, however, not been arrested till now. Four members of a family were found lying unconscious under mysterious circumstances at Haripur village at their residence in Sector 4. The police suspected that a servant employed by the family had drugged the family to loot it. The driver of the family, who had introduced the servant to the family, was also found unconscious at the house along with
Rakesh Kapil, his wife Tripta Kapil and their children Abhilasha and Abhishek. Ornaments and three mobile phone sets were missing from the house. Tripta runs a school in the house. Her husband had retired from a bank a few years ago. During investigation, the police arrested the driver Suren, suspecting that he might help trace the servant. |

14 booked for brawl at P’kula hotel
Panchkula, August 29 Two of the accused, identified as Surjeet Dhillon of Mani Majra and Kanchan Kumar of Sector 16, Panchkula, have already been arrested. The party, which continued till 2 am with liquor flowing freely, was organised for cement dealers of the tricity. According to Sector 5 SHO, hotel owner Puneet Walia was booked for the violation of norms under which no liquor can be served after 11 pm. Other accused include Subhash, Rajesh, Arun Jain, Sahdev, and Virender, all residents of Panchkula, and Ramesh and KP Vaid, both residents of Chandigarh. It was around 2 am when the police got a call about a clash. On reaching, the police found pieces of broken crockery, liquor bottles and bloodstains on the floor of the hotel, said the SHO. While a majority of the accused managed to escape, Dhillon and Kanchan were nabbed who revealed the names of their accomplices, he added. |

Woman gets 5-year jail for looting people
Chandigarh, August 29 Earlier, the court of Additional District and Sessions Judge Ravi Kumar Sondhi had convicted her on August 27. The 40-year-old woman was held on charges of causing hurt to people by means of poisoning and robbing them. Sushma was earlier part of a three-member all women gang, which was active in Patiala and Chandigarh. The gang had adopted a very peculiar modus operandi. She would ask for a lift in a car, along with her son, then offer some sedative drink to the driver and then fled after robbing the victims of all their belongings. Sushma had robbed more than 10 in a similar way, and she used to frequently change cities after committing the crimes. The police had arrested Sushma in December, 2008. |

Surjit academy win hockey tourney
Chandigarh, August 29 It was a one sided affair as Bush players could not score even a single goal during the regulation period. Surjit players kept pressure on the Bush players from the very start of the match. Baljit hit the first goal in the 8th minute of the game. The ball went to many players, but Lovepreet, from Surjit Academy scored two consecutive goals in the 11th and 13th minute of the match. It was Jatinder, who hit the board in the 16th minute and kept the pressure going on Bush players. Rajat, also hit the goal. Again Lovepreet scored 6th goal of the match and Harjit scored ultimate goal in the 68th minute of the match. Surjit players converted three penalty corners in their favour, but Bush players could not get any success in the penalty corners. MRSH Academy was announced the most well behaved team of the tourney. Best goalkeeper award was given to Parampreet of Shivalik Academy. Best full back: Jugraj Singh of Bush Academy; Best half back: Harpreet, Surjit Academy; Best forward: Dalpreet Singh of MRSH Academy.The cash prizes of Rs 9,000 and Rs 6,000 were given to the winners and the runners up teams. |

Mohali, August 29 The Punjab Red was bowled out for 316 in 109.1 overs. Overnight batsmen Taruwar Kohli and Mayank Sidana could not progress much, as Taruwar Kohli unbeaten 48 overnight was caught by Manish Bhatia of the bowling of Siddharth Kaul after adding two runs to his overnight score. Mayank Sidana, however, continued the good work and found an able partner in Gunjot Singh and the two added 85 runs for the fifth wicket before Gunjot Singh was clean bowled by left arm spinner Lakshay Seth for 38. Mayank Sidana, however, missed his ton by seven runs when Dhillon caught him on the bowling of right arm leg spinner Rahul Sharma for 93 off 200 balls inclusive of 11x4s and 2x6s. Love Kumar remained undefeated on 60 of 104 balls studded with 9x4s. Lakshay Seth 4/64, Rahul Sharma 3/64 and Siddharth Kaul 3/94 shared the bowling honours for the Punjab Blue. The second match was played in Patiala between the Punjab Yellow and Punjab Green. 300 players honoured by UT education dept
Chandigarh, August 29 Director Public Instructions (schools) Samwartak Singh honoured players, their coaches and managers. The UT education department has won three gold models in team events, one in football boys under-17 and hockey girls under-17, silver medal in hockey boys under-19, lawn tennis boys under-14, cricket boys under-14, handball boys under-19, roller hockey boys under-19, fencing boys under-19, fencing girls under-19, riffle shooting boys under-17 and air riffle girls under-19. Students also won bronze medal in fencing boys under-19, football boys under-19, baseball boys under-17, lawn tennis boys under-19, lawn tennis girls under-19, cricket boys under-19, handball girls under-19 and softball boys under-19. City schools also claimed five gold medals in judo girls under-14, roller-skating girls under-19 and rink 1 quads and road 1 quads, roller skating boys under-19 rink 2 quads. Chandigarh fencer bagged six silver, two silver in roller skating one each boys and girls, one silver in athletics and three silver in riffle shooting under-17 for girls and two in boys section. The efforts of coaches and physical education teachers were also appreciated. City boys and girls claimed 21 bronze medals including five in judo, three in boxing, two in gymnastics, seven in fencing, three in roller skating and one in athletics. Bikramjeet Singh and Deepak Devrani of GMSSS-37 represented India in the Asian Football Cup Under-16 held in Russia and Digvijay Singh of DAV Public School-8 represented India in Asian School Basketball Championship held in China. Six visually impaired athletes won medals in the National Sports Meet for the blind held in Ludhiana. All these athletes belonged to Institute of Blind-26. |

Panchkula, August 29 Shikhar Dhyani of Hansraj Cricket Academy was declared man of the match. Stadium-XI won the toss and decided to bat first. Their opener Ashutosh played a brilliant knock of 30 runs, which helped Stadium-XI to score 99 for 6 in allotted 20 overs. Hansraj bowlers Aman Kumar, Shivam Arora and Sidhant Gautam shared three wickets each. Shikhar Dhyani scored 43 runs in 15 balls and Shivam Arora made 27 runs.
