Mayor Kanwar Sain defended the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) as he refused to admit that waterlogging was caused due to the civic body’s incapability to desilt drains. He claimed the MCD had already desilted 98 per cent drains that flow into the Yamu na.

The Mayor said waterlogging was due to the constructions being carried out by the Delhi Metro and other civic  agencies. This prevents water from flowing to drains, he said.

Assembly Poll
Rajput sammelan to chalk out plan
Tribune News Service

Faridabad, July 28
With the possibility of the assembly election taking place in Haryana in October, the Haryana Rajput Pratinidhi Sabha, headed by a retired bureaucrat, H.S.Rana, has decided to convene a state-level sammelan of members of the Rajput community to discuss their plan in the election.

Rana today said that the decision to convene the sammelan at Karnal on August 21 was taken at a meeting of the executive committee of the sabha at its office headquarters here, a couple of days ago.

Giving details of the meeting of the executive committee, he said that the Karnal assembly will also adopt a resolution urging all the parties to give tickets to members of the Rajput community. According to him, the number of Rajput voters in Haryana is about 10 lakh. The sabha expressed concern that in spite of such a big chunk of the state’s population, there were only four MLAs from the community, three of the Congress and one of the INLD, in the Haryana Vidhan Sabha.

Rana urged the ruling Congress to give at least six tickets to the Rajput community in the coming election.

According to him, Mahendragarh, Ateli Mandi, Faridabad, Prithla, among others, are the places where the community will stake claim for ticket from the Congress.

The sabha warned that in the coming election, the community will take tough stance by putting up nominees as independents where it constitutes the second largest in terms of vote bank, in case the parties deny them the ticket.

The sabha regrets that the community got a raw deal from the Congress, the INLD and the BJP in the last Lok Sabha election.

It also demanded, especially from the Congress, to give nomination to one member of the community in the Rajya Sabha from Haryana.

Electrician, aide in police net for Green Park robbery
Rs 83.21 lakh recovered
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 28
The south district police today claimed to have cracked the Green Park robbery case with the arrest of two persons and recovered robbed Rs 83.21 lakh from their possession.

The breakthrough came within 24 hours of the robbery that took place on Sunday night around 10 pm from the office of Macawber Vee Kay Pvt. Ltd., a dealer in ash handling equipment situated at Green Park Extension.

The two robbers had opened the locker of the office through the digital code and had decamped with Rs 91 lakh.

According to the police, the mastermind of the robbery was an electrician of the company, Satish Gupta (31), who engaged his brother-in-law Virender Gupta (32) and his two associates to do the job. Satish and Virender have been arrested, while their accomplices — Firoz and Shukeen— are absconding.

According to HGS Dhaliwal, DCP (south), Satish was always under suspicion because it was clear that somebody who knew the digital code had helped in opening the safe.

All employees of the company, including security guard Vinod and Satish, who were present on the spot at the time of the incident, were interrogated.

“Several contradictions surfaced during the examination of these two employees. Vinod said he was present inside the kitchen when two persons started hitting him with a rod and Satish was no where around at that time. However, Satish could not satisfactorily reply as to why he did not raise an alarm as he must have got sufficient time when the robbers were engaged with the guard,” said Dhaliwal.

Through the accountant of the company Rajiv Aggarwal, the police learnt that there was a strong possibility that Satish might have the knowledge of the digital code of the safe.

When interrogated, Satish initially denied his involvement, but later broke down and accepted. He said he had become greedy after he saw huge cash in the electronic safe.

“They had involved Shaukeen and Firoz by promising to give them for Rs 3 lakh each. They were given their share after the robbery. Remaining Rs 83 lakh was recovered from Virender Gupta who was arrested from Khoda Colony in Ghaziabad last night,” said DCP Dhaliwal.

They called Tendulkar, Saurav ‘dulhans’
Tribune News Service

New Delhi, July 28
Revealing a string of code words used by Pakistan-trained terrorists, who were allegedly involved in a plot to kidnap cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly, the public prosecutor told a local court the deeper meaning of innocuous words like "daadi maa ka ghar" "market" and "dulhan".

Opposing the bail plea of the six Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami (HuJI) terrorists, public prosecutor Anita Hooda showed to additional sessions judge Pinki a bunch of emails which revealed the secret code language. The e-mails were allegedly part of communication between terrorists in India and other countries.

The decision on the bail plea was not announced today.

All six terrorists are behind bars since 2001 for allegedly conspiring to kidnap the cricketers. Their aim, according to the prosecution, was to demand two HuJI operatives — Nasarullah Langrial and Abdul Rahim—then lodged in Indian jails, in lieu of the kidnapped cricketers.

Narrating the plot, Anita Hooda said "daadi maa ka ghar" was the code name for India, while "market" was the name used for Bangladesh and "dulhan" referred to the hostages.

Hooda read out retrieved texts of e-mails to prove that these accused were all part of the conspiracy and were in constant touch with each other through internet.

The next hearing of the case is on August 30.
