Himanshu Sabbharwal’s aide found stabbed in DU
New Delhi, July 24 According to the police, the body of Parminder Singh, who worked as accountant with Himanshu’s advertising firm in Gurgaon, was found near Khalsa College in the Maurice Nagar area of the north campus by a passerby around 11.30 pm. “He had seven stab wounds and robbery is definitely not the motive because his motorcycle was found at the spot,” said a police official close to the investigation, adding that Parminder’s mobile was missing. According to Sagar Preet Hooda, DCP (north), a case of murder has been lodged at the Maurice Nagar police station and matter is being investigated from all angles, including personal enmity. Parminder was found dead only about an hour after he and Himanshu finished pasting posters in the university for a candlelight march on Sunday to demand justice in the Sabharwal murder case. According to the statement given by Himanshu to the police, he, along with his friends Pooja and Saif, had dropped Parminder at the law faculty, where he had parked his bike and left around 10.40 pm. “About half an hour after I left Parminder, his wife called and told me that Singh had not returned home, but I assured her that he would reach soon. Around 2.30 am I received a call from the Delhi police that he had been murdered,” Himanshu told media today afternoon. Pooja, a freelance journalist and Saif, a student of Ramjas College, were called by the police for questioning and their statements were recorded separately. According to police sources, all four knew each other as they were associated with an NGO, Uday Foundation, which was pursuing Professor Sabbharwal’s death case. Parminder stayed with his family in Sagarupur area of southwest Delhi and was working with Himanshu for past four years. His father Raj Kumar told the police that his son did not have any enmity with anyone and he had no idea why he was killed. However, according to unconfirmed sources, he had named some members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student’s wing of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), responsible for his son’s murder. A court in Maharashtra had on July 13 acquitted six students accused of beating to death Prof. Sabharwal in Ujjain’s Madhav College in August 2006. The six accused, said to be activists of the ABVP, and were let off due to lack of evidence against them. |
Metro Mishap Report blames design, material
New Delhi, July 24 Sources said the report was received by managing director E. Sreedharan and had been passed on to the DMRC board of directors. They added that nobody below the rank of director had access to the report. It would be made public only after the authorities take a close look at it. “The board of directors will analyse the report and would then place it before the managing director to finally take action,” he said. According to reports, the enquiry committee has blamed the design and construction material for the accident. The report does not hold one person responsible for the accident. There are chances that based on the findings, action is taken against design officials. Gammon India, the private contractor for the line on which the mishap took place, could also be blamed for using substandard material and negligence. The enquiry committee included A. K. Nagpal from IIT Delhi, B. R. Bose from Delhi College of Engineering and Steve Lowry from DMRC. On July 12, an under-construction elevated section of the Delhi Metro collapsed after a pillar gave in at the Zamrudpur site killing six workers, including a site engineer.
Safety Check
Sreedharan has announced that Metro would set up a full-time organisation to check safety procedures and quality of material used in the construction works. It would be headed by the general manager (stocks and operations).
The organisation will visit stations to check the walls and other structures for any cracks. If it finds any crack, it will report it to the MD directly and immediate steps will be taken to rectify the problems. |
