50 cholera cases reported in June
New Delhi, June 12 More than 50 cases of cholera have been reported in June so far in Delhi, according to the latest surveillance report by the health department of Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). With this, the total cases of cholera registered this year have risen to 172. The rise in the number of water-borne diseases has come at a time when monsoon is still a few days away. Compared to the cases of previous months, 50 cases in June, is the highest figure recorded this year so far. In May 2008, the total number of cholera-related cases reported from the city stood at 35. The report also indicates that the number of cases will go up with the onset of monsoon. MCD’s health officials said one thing that helps in the outbreak of the disease is poor sanitary conditions. “One of the main reasons for the outbreak has been the supply of contaminated water supplied by the government bodies,” alleged one of the MCD officials. Though, they said that the situation is under control and preventive measures have been taken. “Awareness campaigns are running throughout the Capital and people are being told about the ways they can save themselves from the disease,” said Dr V.K. Monga, chairman, Health Committee. |
MCD division on Assembly agenda
New Delhi, June 12 Speaker of the Delhi assembly Yoganand Shastri said that a resolution for division of the MCD would be moved by Congress MLA Veer Singh Dhingan. The resolution will state that the civic body should be divided to ensure better quality of work . According to sources, the Delhi government feels if the civic body is divided, the functioning would be transparent, as recent raids on MCD offices have established the existence corruption in the corporation. The issue of the division of the civic body had come up a few years ago also. It was proposed that the MCD should be divided into three parts – Trans- Yamuna area, south Delhi and the main MCD office. But the idea had to be dropped because then Congress was in power in the corporation and the then strongman of the party Ram Babu Sharma, who was the leader of the house and the chairman of the standing committee, had opposed the proposal. However, this time it is the BJP is opposing the proposal. Former chairman of the standing committee Vijender Gupta said “Corruption is not a valid reason to divide a statutory body. If there is mismanagement in the civic body, the central government should charge particular officers in the MCD. The Delhi government is not an authority to divide the civic body. It is being controlled by the union government directly,” he said. |
Swine flu: IGI airport gets thermal scanners
New Delhi, June 12 The decision to place these scanners was taken last night at an emergency cabinet meeting, informed an official from the health department here. “Due to the high inflow of suspected swine flu cases from the severely infected countries, the health department is going to install thermal scanners now at IGI Airport. To start with, four to six thermal scanners would be placed and then based on the feedback, the system would be tried at other airports too,” said Vineet Chowdhry, joint secretary in the health ministry. He added, “These highly sensitive thermal scanners can detect even a minor rise in body temperature from distance, and thus would aid in early detection of H1N1 cases, pointing out persons with the slightest fever (major sign of swine flu). But, we have to see how effective they are during rush hours.” Further the joint secretary explained that these scanners function with a barometric temperature, and the moment this threshold is crossed, the scanners indicate it with a red light. Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) authorities consider this provision would especially filter out the huge inflow of suspected cases of the dreaded disease among the students studying abroad, given the fact that most of universities outside are having their vacation. Till evening, no fresh cases of the deadly virus came up in the Capital with the earlier five patients kept under medication at two designated hospitals—RML and LNJP. The sample of the father of the 17-year-old from Boston has been declared negative, informed Dr N K Chaturvedi, medical superintendent of RML Hospital. Delhi health minister Kiran Walia urged the people to cooperate in the fight against the pandemic and not create health hazards. “Anybody showing symptoms of swine flu should report in any of the designated hospitals and if detected for influenza A should undergo complete treatment. There is a round-the-clock helpline (1075) to help people know more about the symptoms for the disease,” said Walia. Nationally the total tally for the swine flu infection goes to 16 with another case diagnosed positive for the disease today in Hyderabad. Meanwhile, surveillance at all the 21 international airports, including IGI, has been tightened through mandatory screening and distribution of swine flu advisories by several travel agencies. |

According to the study, the share of public transport ridership has dropped from 60 per cent to 43 per cent. |
Exploitation of child maids continues
New Delhi, June 12 Lata (name changed), 25, was employed by a lady when she was just 12 years old and had to do “whatever the lady asked her to”. Today, working as a housemaid, Lata narrates how she and many other girls like her became victims of molestation and prostitution after they were brought to Delhi with the promise of a good job. Remembering her past, Lata says, “I wish no girl goes through what I had to go through. It is such a helpless situation because neither you can live nor can you die.” Vandana (name changed), another girl who has been working as a housemaid since she was nine years old, expresses her desire to study. “At an age when I wanted to study, I had to lift bags of my employer’s children and drop them school. My parents sold me for some money because they had eight children—six daughters and two sons. They never ever tried to trace me.” “It is true that even after taking several steps to stop child labour, exploitation of girls in all forms— slavery, bonded labour, prostitution and pornography—still continues,” says an official from the Centre for Child Rights. According to Arvind Gauri, a social worker, the situation demands a change in policy. “Government policies should address the causes of child labour, paying particular attention to the situation of girls. Greater attention should be given to educating adolescent girls.” Dhananjay Tingal, an activists working for child rights, says, “It is vital that secondary education and skills training facilities cover girls and children from poor and rural households .” |

Applying for DU? Check out add-on courses also
New Delhi, June 12 The courses, ranging from two to six months, are add-on courses that students can pursue along with their undergraduate courses. The programmes, an unique example of public-private partnership, had received a thumbs-up from the students last year. “We started the programmes last year and the response of students was brilliant. The campus has already produced two batches and is inviting the third batch this year,” said Mamta Bhatia, officer on special duty, Campus of Open Learning. The classes for the certificate programmes are held at the building of Centre for Professional and Technical Training in Keshav Puram. Increasing the number of such courses, the campus has signed five fresh memorandums of understandings (MoUs) with private institutes for this academic year. For a certificate course in telecom sales and service, the campus has collaborated with Centum Learning, a Bharti associate. An MoU has also been signed with HCL Infosystems to start a course on IT, web designing and web development. For courses on travel tourism and airfare tickteing, the campus has collaborated with Bird Academy. The campus has also introduced several interesting courses this year in photography, TV production and mass communication in association with Masscomedia. The Campus of Open Learning has also signed an MoU with R.K. Films to offer courses on radio jockeying and broadcast and theatre acting. Courses in insurance are offered in collaboration with Met Life. “We have been running many popular courses here that provide hands-on training to the students. Some of these courses include retail management certification, software application development, automobile service and management. Another important course offered by the campus is in medical transcription. Students from any background can enrol for these courses. After completing the course, they can start their own business from their homes itself,” said Bhatia. Mentioning that the campus has a record of 100 per cent placement, Bhatia said all the courses were designed with a view to offer internship at the end of the course and placement assistance for deserving candidates. In order to prepare the students for the transition from the world of campus to the corporate world, the Campus has started a special capsule programme on soft skills development. To apply for the courses, students must have their primary enrolment in DU. “The courses are open for all DU students, however, preference is given to non-formal students, who are not enrolled in full-time courses like the students of School of Open Learning,” said Bhatia. The admission process for the Campus of Open Learning has already begun. Interested students can download the forms from DU web site www.du.ac.in or can collect the form directly from the campus. Though each course has 25 seats, interested students, who are applying for DU, should apply for the add-on courses simultaneously. The last date for the application process is July 9. |

Over 6 lakh voters not registered in
Gurgaon, residents tell CM
Gurgaon, June 12 The petition says that more than 50,000 names of registered voters were missing in the final voter list and these voters could not cast their votes in spite of holding valid voter cards. “More than six lakh eligible citizens in urban Gurgaon are yet to be registered as voters,” said GURM core committee member S. Oberoi. “Elections will not have any significance if the citizens are not granted their democratic right to exercise their franchise,” he told The Tribune. GURM has insisted that 100 per cent eligible voters in urban Gurgaon must be registered by August 15, 2009. The current population of urban Gurgaon is expected to be over 17 lakh, whereas only 3.86 lakh voters have been registered. GURM also wrote to the chief election commissioner and the state election officer, highlighting the grim scenario and asking for immediate measures. Responding to the petitions, GURM core committee members have been invited by the office of the chief election commission to participate in a meeting to be held on June 12 in Chandigarh to discuss the issue. It should be recalled that the previous DC Deepti Umashankar had instituted an investigation on the missing voters’ names on May 11 when resident bodies raised objections. GURM has insisted that the report of this investigation must be made public without delay. “More than 18,000 names from the DLF area only, registered by the efforts of the RWA in the last few years, were deleted,” said R S Rathee, president of QERWA, and member of the GURM core committee, who was the first to file the objection in the DC’s office. “A large number of voters’ names from HUDA sectors are also missing and residents could not cast their votes when they went to the booth to vote,” Dharam Sagar, president of FORWA and member of the GURM core committee claimed. GURM has also insisted that the recent door-to-door survey carried out by the MCG for ward delimitation of the city should be made public so that the correct population–and the number of eligible voters–can be known to the people of Gurgaon. “Wrong population census is one of the root causes behind inadequate development in Gurgaon,” said retired Maj Gen Satbir Singh, senior advisor with the GURM core committee. “Government records continue to show Gurgaon’s population as seven lakh only based on the 2001 census, whereas in reality the population here has swelled to at least two times that number in the last five to seven years,” he added. |
