Govt has no say in MCD expenditure: Mayor
New Delhi, June 8 The Delhi mayor, Dr Kanwar Sain, said no agency was empowered to reduce the MCD's Councillor Local Area Development Funds. He was reacting to a proposal reportedly pending with the Delhi government regarding a reduction in the fund from Rs 2 crore to Rs 50 lakh. The mayor said the act of government amounted to interfering in the financial autonomy of the civic body. "We do not need any permission from the government to increase the allocation of funds under the DMC Act. It is MCD's discretion how to spend its funds. No authority of the government can decide or prioritize the amount to be spent on any head," said the mayor. He said the MCD enjoys full autonomy, including the financial freedom to decide its own priorities. "The development funds were earmarked to ensure adequate and equitable distribution of financial resources throughout the city. At present, all areas lying within the jurisdiction of MCD enjoy the same weightage, irrespective of their status. It ensures development of all wards on an equal footing," he said. The mayor alleged that the government did not want a fair and equitable distribution of resources and, hence, was interfering in the working of the civic body. |
Delhi butchers reject Ghazipur abattoir
New Delhi, June 8 In a joint statement, DMMA president, Mohammad Aqil Quresh and Jhatka Association president, Krishan Lal, said the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was not aware of the basic requirement of running an abattoir. It had banned the entry of workers inside the abattoir that is not fair as without their entry, proper work cannot be done. They said the jhatka section had been fully shifted to Ghazipur from the Idgah slaughterhouse, but it was unable to fulfil the demand. The demand of jhatka meat in Delhi is 15000 to 20,000 animals per day, but the production is hardly 20 animals per day. In such a situation, illegal slaughtering of animals is being done in various areas. Sometimes, shopkeepers slaughter animals in their shops. The claim of the government that hygienic meat would be provided to the consumers from the modern abattoir at Ghazipur is just on record, said Krishan Lal. He said he had personally met the President, Pratibha Patil, and responding positively, the President had referred his letter to the authorities concerned but they had not done the needful. He said it seemed that the MCD had constructed the slaughterhouse like an intensive care unit (ICU) in a hospital in which the meat sellers handed over their animals to workers after paying slaughtering fee. Some body parts of animals, like intestine and tail, are considered waste and are not being given to the animal owners. But these parts are useful to various industries for various products. |
