Chaos at Haridwar MC meeting
But unanimous resolution on EO’s removal

Dehradun, June 11
Pandemonium prevailed at the much-awaited board meeting of the Haridwar municipal committee today. The executive officer of the municipality, Harshwardhan Mishra, felt the heat as a resolution was unanimously passed by the House on his removal over alleged financial irregularities and on inefficient handling of municipality work which had hindered developmental work in the city.

Developmental works and various other issues were discussed in detail.

Irrespective of party affiliations, ward members were adamant on Mishra’s removal. Ward members had boycotted the sub-panel elections on February 25 because of the alleged biased conduct of executive officer Harshwardhan Mishra who was the electoral officer for the elections.

On April 2, in the Usha Ropeway fare issue, he was allegedly manhandled by ward members and was forcefully taken from his home to seal the gates of Usha Ropeway office. On receiving this treatment at the hands of ward members, Mishra had said that he didn’t want to continue in office in the city.

The resolution of removing the EO will be send to the state government for further action. Leader of opposition Sanjay Sharma termed the decision as apt and said that for better coordination among ruling and Opposition members and development of Haridwar, the removal of EO is in right direction.

The meeting went on till late evening. Most ward members discussed the problems in their respective wards.

The issue of the Usha Ropeway fare hike was kept for discussion later as all members had decided to table developmental issues first in the meeting.

Till the filing of this report, the meeting was on and despite many verbal duels that ensued in the course of the day, members were seen trying hard to keep the meeting go on uninterrupted.

Cong to take up minority issues
Umesh Dewan
Tribune News Service

Dehradun, June 11
Uttarakhand Congress is all set to take up issues pertaining to the minority community in the state. The party has decided to chalk out a comprehensive strategy to strengthen its voter base among Muslims and Dalits.

  • Modern education in madrassas

  • Re-constitution of Waqf Board
  • Construction of Haj House

Accusing the ruling BJP government of completely "ignoring" the minorities, Uttarakhand Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) president Yashpal Arya said the party would take up the issues pertaining to these segments in the state assembly.

Notably, After a period of almost two decades, Muslims and Dalits returned to the Congress fold during the Lok Sabha polls, thereby making it possible for the party to win all five seats in Uttarakhand.

Addressing mediapersons at the Congress headquarters here today, Arya said during the ND Tiwari regime in Uttarakhand, the Congress government had made provisions for computers and modern education in the 'madrassas', but after taking over the reins, Khanduri government discontinued this.

"Computers were provided in 'madrassas' during the tenure of the Congress government, but now everything is in a shambles," he rued. "It is unfortunate that during the past two years, Uttarakhand government failed to utilise budgetary allocations under the Special Component Plan (SCP)," he added.

Taking up the issue of the Waqf Board, Arya said re-constitution of the Board in the state is lying in cold storage ever since BJP came to power.

Flaying the BJP government for making all efforts to ensure that minorities do not come into the mainstream, the state Congress president said during the Tiwari regime, the Union government had started a 15-point Minorities Welfare Programme, but the Khanduri government discontinued that as well.

"The proposed plan for construction of a Haj House is hanging mid-way. Congress plans to take up all these issues in the near future," he announced.

Arya disclosed that in the coming days, party leadership and the newly elected Lok Sabha MPs from Uttarakhand would be convening a meeting to discuss the future course of action regarding how to take up these issues.

Ridiculing the ongoing infighting in the state BJP that is affecting the functioning of the government as well, Arya said today Bhartiya Janata Party has transformed into 'Bhartiya Jhagralu Party'.

Dehradun, June 11
Following a clean sweep in the general election in Uttarakhand, Congress leaders are gearing up to persuade the party’s central leadership to induct one more MP from Uttarakhand into the Union Cabinet.

According to the senior Congress leaders, soon a delegation of the top brass of the Uttarakhand Congress will visit New Delhi to meet AICC president Sonia Gandhi on their request.

Though the Congress won all five parliamentary constituencies in Uttarakhand, there is only one MP from the state in the Manmohan cabinet. Haridwar MP Harish Rawat has been inducted as minister of state.

During a function to felicitate Pauri Garhwal MP Satpal Maharaj at the Congress headquarters here today, UPCC president Yashpal Arya said accompanied by senior party leaders of the state, he would be meeting Sonia Gandhi soon to take up the matter of inducting one more minister from Uttarakhand.

“We are hopeful of a positive outcome,” he said, adding that the move would boost the morale of party workers. Maharaj declined comment on the issue, but he referred to the issue in his speech in a subtle way. “If a delegation of state Congress leaders requests Sonia Gandhi, I think she will not hesitate to appoint one more sewak from Uttarakhand in the central ministry,” he said.

Dehradun, June 11
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked Dehradun resident and Chief Engineer of ONGC, currently posted in Gujarat, on the charge of getting employment on the basis of a false caste certificate.

Interestingly, his younger brother is also facing charges in the designated CBI Court in Dehradun for getting employment in the ONGC in the officer cadre using wrong means.

In February, the CBI had arrested his younger brother Suveer Kumar and father Vishnu Kant Verma, a former principal of DAV (PG) College here, from their residence at DL Road. Suveer was charged with getting employment in the ONGC on the basis of a false adoption deed.

He is alleged to have obtained a Scheduled Caste certificate in 1983 showing Prem Singh, a peon in the DAV (PG) College where he did post-graduation as his father. On the basis of this, he gained employment in the ONGC in 1990 as an executive officer level II. Subsequently, he was promoted to level III scale. He was posted at ONGC work centre at Chand Khera, Gandhi Nagar, Gujarat.
