Metro to connect Gurgaon in 6 months
New Delhi, May 20 The project of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) would be completed by January 2010 and the DMRC expects some 1.60 lakh persons to use the service daily. The line will be connected via Qutab Minar, this section of metro would cover a distance of 14.47 km and connect Delhi with high-profile DLF commercial and residential areas in Gurgaon. This is the place where offices of the top MNCs and Indian companies are located. “We are moving at a good pace” said Anuj Dayal, spokesperson, Delhi Metro. With an approximate cost of Rs 1,320 crore, the Gurgaon line would connect total five stations. The first station in Haryana will be Sikandarpur, located smack on the state-border with Delhi. The line would have stations at the IFFCO chowk, MG Road, Garden Estate and HUDA City Centre. “Almost 85 per cent of the civil work has been completed on this fully elevated line,” said Dayal. The structural work was almost over at the Sikandarpur metro station and currently the work was in progress on the entry and exit points. While the platform work was over at the IIFCO station, the lift area was under casting. At the MG road and Garden Estate stations, the metro staff was working on the entry and exit points. Around 30 per cent of the total work was over at the HUDA City Centre where the basement work was in progress. Ultimately, the Gurgaon line would be extended up till the Central Secretariat metro station by June 2010, hence proving a direct link right till the Karnal-bye pass. Using this, people of Gurgaon can just ride the metro to cross Delhi to reach the northern outskirts or the railway station and the ISBT. On the Delhi-stretch of the line, approximately 70 per cent of work has been completed on Qutub Minar to Ghitorni section, which is a part of the all important Central Secretariat to Gurgaon link. The stations on this stretch are Chattarpur, Sultanpur, Ghitorni and Arjangarh. Dayal pointed out that there was no trail run of Gurgaon-Delhi link as reported in a section of the media. This is scheduled at the year end but no date has been finalised

Plots on cremation ground expose HUDA’s callousness
Gurgaon, May 20 The bone of contention between them is a cremation ground, which is located on residential plots of Sector 28 and has made life hell for the sector residents. When the HUDA authorities initiated the development of Sector 28 here, they chose to overlook the cremation ground which was located on the land. So much so that residential plots were cut on the cremation ground and allotted to the applicants. This led to a series of confrontations and ugly exchanges between the plot owners and residents of the village, who continued to cremate their dead there. Now, while the villagers claim that the cremation ground has been there for ages and refuse to accept an alternative site, the sight and smell of the dead being cremated right in front of their houses is becoming unbearable for the sector residents. To top it all, the residents of Chakkarpur village recently got a boundary wall constructed around the cremation ground with the help of a local MLA. Gurgaon MLA Dharambir Gaba squarely blames the HUDA authorities for what he calls their complete negligence. HUDA officials should have visited the site before going ahead with their developmental plans. The cremation ground is as old as the village itself and the villagers have their sentiments attached to it, he maintains. Endorsing his views, Anil Yadav, a former sarpanch of the village, asserts that the cremation ground was hundreds of years old and could not be shifted elsewhere. He points out that the village panchayat had objected to HUDA acquiring the cremation ground plot, but to no avail. HUDA Estate Officer Yashendra Singh admitted that the lapse had led to a critical situation. He said they would shortly convene a meeting involving both parties to reach a mutually acceptable solution to the issue. However, no official was able to state what should be the quantum of punishment for the officials due to whose negligence so many people are being subjected to grave inconvenience for so many years. |

‘Death due to Corporal Punishment’
Chandigarh , May 20 Justice Surya Kant of the high court has also made it clear that befitting action would follow if the inquiry found substance in the allegations. Karnal resident Gurmail Singh had moved the court against the state of Haryana and others for a direction to take appropriate action against erring officials, allegedly responsible for the death of his 15-year-old son. The petitioner claimed that his son, a student of Karnal Government Senior Secondary School, was “unfortunately” suffering from some heart ailment since his birth. Taking note of his contentions, Justice Surya Kant observed: “While the petitioner alleges that his son having reached late was subjected to corporal punishment despite the fact that the teacher knew that he was suffering from heart ailment, the respondents have come up with the plea that it was during the course of the morning prayer that the petitioner’s son collapsed and was immediately rushed to the hospital where he died. “The petitioner, however, relies upon a letter allegedly written by some students wherein it is claimed that the son of the petitioner died because of beatings given by the teacher”. After going through the documents and the rival contentions, Justice Surya Kant observed: Considering the fact that there are seriously disputed questions of facts involved, this writ petition is disposed of with a direction to the District Education Officer, Karnal, to hold another fact-finding inquiry to look into the allegations made by the petitioner”. Before parting with the orders, Justice Surya Kant added: “And, if there is any substance therein, to recommend the appropriate action, in accordance with law”. With the observations, Justice Surya Kant disposed of the petition. Corporal punishment as a practice has been decried by the courts in various judicial pronouncements. At some places, the provisions for corporal punishment have been struck down as these violated the constitutional right, guaranteeing equality and protection of life and personal liberty. |

State Cong presents a
united face
Geetanjali Gayatri Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, May 20 At the meeting that lasted for a few minutes, the Congress asked the state unit to work towards strengthening the party. The Haryana team comprised party in charge of Haryana affairs, Prithvi Raj Chavan, the newly elected nine MPs of the party, Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, PCC president Phool Chand Mullana, working president Kuldeep Sharma and campaign in charge Venod Sharma called on the party president yesterday evening. However, the “surprise” presence in this winning team was that of former MP Jai Prakash, who lost from the Hisar Lok Sabha seat in this election. His presence assumes significance, especially, since Jai and his supporters have openly blamed infighting in the party and the “big names within the Congress” for the defeat. Interestingly, while his camp in the party is going all out to paint a picture of “sabotage” in Hisar by other ticket aspirants from within the party, the other camp has questioned the former’s silence on the fact that Jai was a “poor third” in his own brother’s Assembly seat of Barwala. Senior party leaders said none of the party seniors had chosen to state that the INLD got over 22,000 votes while the HJC (BL) polled the highest of 29,000 votes from Randhir Singh’s Barwala seat whereas the Congress got only 18,000 plus votes. Meanwhile, at the meeting, the CM arrived with MPs Arvind Sharma, Jitender Malik, Deepinder Singh Hooda, Mullana, Sharma and Jai while the rest of the MPs came on their own. Faridabad MP Avtar Singh Badhana did not show up for the meeting at all. Sources said Chavan individually, too, called up the MPs to ensure that they arrived for the meeting in spite of their personal differences. At the meeting, MPs Selja, Rao Indrajeet Singh and Shruti Choudhry made special mention of the efforts put in by the Congress president to campaign for the party and gave the entire credit of their win to her. The timing for this meeting is important since it comes at a time when the process of selection of Cabinet ministers is also on. While Selja and Rao Indrajeet Singh, both have been ministers of state in the previous term of the government, are among the front runners in the state for a ministerial berth, hectic lobbying to be the “youth face” from Haryana in the Cabinet is also on. The names doing the rounds are that of Deepinder who won by the highest margin of over four lakh votes from the Rohtak seat, Shruti Choudhry who defeated the “powerful” Chautala scion to register a win, and Ashok Tanwar, Rahul Gandhi’s soldier. |
Residents face power cuts, water scarcity
Sirsa/Fatehabad, May 20 Sirsa residents, particularly those residing on the Hisar road, faced unprecedented power cuts on Monday and Tuesday. The situation improved a bit today, but still more than four power cuts have already been witnessed since morning. In Fatehabad too, residents have been facing four to six power cuts in a day. “It is zero cut (of no specified duration) and has been imposed from headquarters,” is the reply of men answering complaints at the customer service centres. Along with the power problem, residents have also been facing an acute scarcity of water both at Sirsa and Fatehabad. The problem is severe in Chatargarh Patti, Inderpura Mohalla, Balmiki Mohalla, Prem Nagar and Singikat Mohalla, where residents have been depending on water supplied by tankers. On the directions of the state government, the deputy commissioners of Sirsa and Fatehabad today reviewed the position of potable water supplies in their respective districts. Addressing a meeting of officers and prominent citizens in the municipal council office at Fatehabad, DC, JS Ahlawat, said prudent use of water and electricity was the only answer to power and water scarcity as the demand of these two commodities was very high due to extremely hot weather these days. He also called upon the public health authorities to increase the supply of potable water in the town. Addressing a meeting in his office today, Sirsa Deputy Commissioner SK Goyal said two new tubewell would be soon installed in the town to improve supply of drinking water to the Chattargarh Patti and Prem Nagar areas. Goyal asked the public health authorities to ensure sufficient supply of drinking water and also directed officers of the irrigation department to complete the filling of village ponds. Heatwave hits cotton farmers
Sirsa, May 20 Sprouts of cotton of many farmers in this district have withered away due to the heatwave prevailing in the area during the past one week. Many others have decided to delay sowing as they see no let-up in the weather conditions. Satnam Singh, a farmer from Panjuana village, sowed Bt cotton on 20 acres earlier this month, but all his crops have been damaged now due to the prevalent heat conditions. “I spent Rs 1,700 per acre on Bt seeds, besides the expenditure on preparing the fields for sowing. Now, I will have to do it all again,” he said. Rajbir of Kharian village spent more than Rs 60,000 for sowing Bt cotton on his fields, which has proved a wasteful expenditure now. “I have decided to wait for the current heatwave conditions to subside before I sow cotton on my fields again,” said Rajbir. Sowing of cotton, which is in abundance in this district, starts immediately after harvesting of wheat. Farmers started sowing seeds of the crop from the first week of May and many were still in the process of sowing, when the weather suddenly started turning hostile. Crops of farmers that had just sprouted have withered away due to the scorching sun resulting in heavy losses to them. Mohinder Singh of Panniwala said farmers of his area were waiting for the heatwave to subside so that they could sow their crops. |
