Finally, NDRI admits death of second buffalo clone
Karnal, May 10 The sulking scientists, associated with 20-year-old prestigious buffalo clone project were avoiding the press yesterday but their silence turned into affirmation today, impliedly confirming the news carried by “The Tribune” today. The NDRI spokesman, Dr Rameshwar, said there was no reason for the scientists to get frustrated by the premature death of the clone (died two months ago), and the scientists would take more precautions to ensure that the third clone expected to be delivered next month was safe and survived. He said he would give the full details about the death of second clone and the steps being taken for safe delivery of the third clone. Senior scientist S K Singla, working on the project, said the cloning was totally a new “research and development” project and continuation experimentation and occasional failures were part of all R&D projects. It would have no impact on the project and the scientists would work with more vigour to not only achieve success, but also develop a “lasting” and replication technology, he said, adding that the scientists had made a major breakthrough and reached the threshold point. “We are confident that the third clone will be born as scheduled and there will be no qualms this time”, he added. The second clone died about two months ago after it was prematurely delivered after seven months but the NDRI scientists did not disclose it. Earlier also, first clone, born on February 6, 2009, had survived for only six days and the scientists attributed the premature death of the cloned calf to lung infection with symptoms of pneumonia. |
Suicide By Rape Victim
Rohtak, May 10 A five-member team set up by the Haryana police visited the PGIMS today and held talks with the aggrieved family, but without any positive result till the last report came in. Meanwhile Sunil, husband of the victim who had also been admitted in a critical condition in the PGIMS has been shifted to the ward from the ICU. He is likely to be discharged in a day or two. Though the police authorities did not issue any statement regarding the case, it is learnt that members of the five-member cops team headed by IG (Crime) met the aggrieved family today and discussed the matter, but it is reported that the police officials could not break the impasse that had been on for the past four days till late this evening. Meanwhile, the matter took a new turn after speculations rife in the air that Sunil could be under pressure from the police after it was stated (not officially) that he had not consumed poison along with Alka, as reported earlier and could be booked by the police for forcing his wife to commit suicide. But, if this theory was accepted than the police and the doctors would be in a tight spot to answer why Sunil had been kept in the ICU for more than three days. It is claimed by a kin, who do not want to be identified that police had started all tactics to pressurise the family to end their stir and lift the body for cremation, in view of the media taking up the matter prominently. While the senior police officials were not available for comments, the report of the FSL was still awaited, on whose basis the police authorities were expected to take any action. Amazingly the police department here had been maintaining a kind of silence despite the matter hitting to such a feverish pitch. However, the family has refused to accept any financial assistance from the government saying that it would be tantamount to selling the body of deceased. “Sunil, too, has been saying that he will commit suicide along
with his two kids, he was not delivered justice even now, said Roop Chand, Sunil’s father. |
HJC, BSP allege rigging during polls
Chandigarh, May 10 HJC candidate from Rohtak Kishan Murti Hooda alleged in his complaint that there was a large-scale booth capturing in Rohtak, from where the son of Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is the Congress candidate. BSP candidate from Gurgaon Zakir Hussain has alleged that voters in assembly segments of Nurh, Ferozepur Jhirkha and Punhana of the Gurgaon Lok Sabha constituency were denied their right to vote as those who did not have voter identity cards (VIC) were not allowed to vote by the polling parties. Hussain alleged that though the heads of the family had their VICs and they had identified other members of the family, yet the polling parties refused to allow them to vote, saying that they had no instructions to allow such persons to vote who were identified by the head of their family or on the basis of some other document listed by the commission as proof of identity. The BSP candidate alleged that the Assistant Returning Officers (ARO) of these assembly segments acted “dishonestly with mala fide intentions and in connivance with the party in power in the state.” He said when such complaints came to his notice, he brought this to the notice of the Returning Officer and the observer, besides sending fax messages to the commission. But by that time lot of damage had been done and voters who had been denied their right to vote had gone back to their homes. Hussain said if the correct instructions of the commission had been supplied to the polling parties, the polling percentage in these areas would have crossed 80 per cent. He also alleged that the ARO, Ferozepur Jhirka had categorically told the polling officers that the polling should not cross 65 per cent. Demanding a re-poll in these segments, the BSP candidate said strict action should be taken against the defaulting officers. |
Strike fallout: City turns into dumping ground
Fatehabad, May 10 “We have not received our salaries for the past three to five months from the contractor and all our representations to the authorities have fallen on deaf ears,” said a safai karamchari. Poonam Ratti, state president of the Nagarpalika Karamchari Sangh said their association, too, had taken up the case of contractual safai karamcharis, but, he alleged, the contractor had not being paying their dues. Heaps of garbage have accumulated at several places in the town due to the strike of the safai karamcharis threatening outbreak of insect-born diseases. The strike has also deflated the sanitation campaign launched by Deputy Commissioner JS Ahlawat in the town. When contacted, Ahlawat said the matter of strike by the contractual safai karamcharis had been brought to his notice and he would look into the matter on Monday as he was busy with elections. “The dispute is between the contractor and his labour and hence the authorities have nothing to do in it. But I will call both the parties to settle their dispute,” he added. Ahlawat said the sanitation campaign launched by the district authorities before the election would be taken up with renewed vigour after Monday. |
Expressway needs urgent attention
Gurgaon, May 10 Still, no concrete steps have been taken to check the alarming trend. Thanks to the lack of a proper control over the functioning of the concessionaire entrusted with the job of regulating traffic flow on the busy road, neither the pedestrians nor the commuters are safe. The heavy traffic on the expressway round the clock makes crossing the road an uphill task for the pedestrians. There is a provision for making foot over-bridges and underpasses, but barring a sparingly used underpass near the Hero Honda chowk, none of these has been completed on the Gurgaon side of the toll barrier. In the absence of these, pedestrians are forced to cross the road amidst a huge number of fast-moving vehicles, which is a threat to their lives. Over-speeding vehicles also pose a major traffic safety risk, especially near the toll barrier and at traffic intersections and entry and exit points. Two-wheeler riders frequently take their vehicles on the flyovers, which again add to the chances of on-road collisions. The handful of traffic marshals deputed to stop the two-wheeler riders from moving onto the flyovers are hardly able to serve the desired purpose. Taking cognisance of the increasing risk, the Gurgaon district administration had constituted a committee in March to ensure adherence to safety norms on the expressway. The committee consists of DCP (traffic) Satender Gupta, SDM Gurgaon (north) Shakti Singh, DGM of the Haryana State Road Development Corporation R K Rathi and representatives of the National Highway Authority of India and its concessionaire DSC Ltd. However, the committee’s maiden report is reportedly lying pending. |

Hooda is Congress’ star campaigner
Chandigarh, May 10 Nonetheless he is the only Congress Chief Minister who is campaigning for the party candidates outside his state. Hooda has emerged as the “farmer face” of the Congress in the recent times following several decisions taken by his government for the welfare of the farmers. More important of these decisions include fixing of floor prices for acquisition of land, which were much higher than the prevalent rates at which the government was acquiring land of the farmers; no more attachment of agriculture land in case a farmer fails to repay his loan; no jail for defaulters of cooperative banks and waiving off Rs 1,600 crore of the electricity bill arrears. The Chief minister has so far addressed public meetings in support of Congress candidates in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Chandigarh. The highest sugarcane price in the country, given by Haryana, has made Hooda a favourite in Uttaranchal and Uttar Pradesh, the governments of which have not been able to give sugarcane price at par with Haryana. Farmers of Rajasthan were so much impressed by the land acquisition policy of Haryana that during the last Vidhan Sabha elections in that state, the Congress had to promise in Rajasthan that after coming to power, its government would frame a new land acquisition policy patterned on Haryana. Convener of the media cell of the Haryana Congress Pawan Jain said schemes like scholarships to school-going children of the Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes A, plots to these communities and free drinking water connections to them initiated by Hooda were some of the major decisions even Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati had not implemented till now. |

Non-Cong, non-BJP PM on cards: Bhajan Lal
Fatehabad, May 10 The former Chief Minister, who had come to Daulatpur village in this district to attend a social function, ridiculed the Haryana Congress’ claims of winning all 10 seats in the state and said the ruling party’s dreams would be shattered in the manner “India shining” reverie of the BJP crashed after the last parliamentary elections. Bhajan Lal said the HJC was going to win five to six seats in the parliamentary elections and said the people of the state had reposed their faith in Kuldeep Bishnoi as the next Chief Minister. “The people of the state have vindicated the stand taken by Bishnoi on key issues during the past four years and have supported him beyond expectations,” he said. He said the party had already won Hisar and Bhiwani with handsome margins and only the formal declaration of results was pending. Bhajan Lal said in the post-poll scenario, no single political party would be able to get enough seats to be able to form the next government and a non-Congress and non-BJP Prime Minister is on the cards. He said the “Third Front”, which came in to existence during the Banglore meeting of various political parties, would gather strength after the poll results. The HJC patron said the people of the state were fed up with the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government due to the “anti-people” policies being pursued by it and added that the people wanted to get rid of it after the next assembly elections. |

‘Journalism faces threat of commercialisation’
Rohtak, May 10 This was claimed by Prabash Joshi, a former Editor of Jansatta, while sepaking at a function organised to release a book on journalism here today. The book titled as “Khoji Patrakarita, Kyon aur Kaise”, is written in Hind and authored by Pawan Kumar Bansal. Joshi said journalism had played a major role in the freedom struggle, but the way the commercialisation had taken over it had not only damaged its overall structure and shape, but also been threatening the existence of free and fair journalism on the whole, which was not good sign for a democracy. He said eminent editors of various newspapers would soon meet the Press Council of India and seek withdrawal of registration of such newspapers which had given space to surrogate news. |

Mystery shrouds death of
teenage girl
Sirsa, May 10 The police that had earlier said she might have died of drowning by accidentally slipping in the 30-ft deep ‘sarovar’ when she had gone their to fetch water, has been forced to retract from its stand after the board of doctors that performed postmortem on her did not buy police’s story of drowning and referred the case to the PGIMS, Rohtak. “The police story said the girl had died of drowning. But we could not find any symptoms giving rise to speculation that she might have been thrown in the ‘sarovar’ after she died,” said Dr Sharanjit Chauhan, who along with Dr Archana Agarwal performed the postmortem. We have referred the case to the PGIMS, Rohtak, for the postmortem, he added. Shanti, a daughter of Bihari migrant Parkash Chand, was missing from her house and her parents had lodged a missing report. Sher Singh Mallewala, manager of Dasham Patshahi Gurudwara said a scarf of a girl was found near the ‘sarovar’ on May 6 giving rise to suspicion that some girl might have been drowned. “The parents of the girl came and identified the scarf and later her slippers were also found outside the Gurdwara. But later, we were told that the missing girl has come back. However, a ‘sewadar’ noticed the body floating in the ‘sarovar’ this morning,” Mallewala said. The police said the cause of death would now be known only after getting the postmortem report from Rohtak. Intriguingly, the police said the kin of the victim had said that they did not want to pursue the case. |
