Finally, Hooda to campaign for Shruti

Chandigarh, May 2
Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda is finally ready to set foot in the Bhiwani-Mahenderagarh seat. He will address first and only rally for Congress nominee Shruti Choudhry in Mahendragarh tomorrow. While Jat-dominated Bhiwani has still not found mention in his itinerary, he has chosen Ahir-dominated Mahenderagarh to seek votes for Shruti. His campaign managers have chosen to interpret this visit to Mahenderagarh as an attempt of the “Congress star campaigner” to sway the voters in favour of the party candidate in an area which is new to the constituency and is seen as a “weak pocket” for the Jat candidates.

They add that the Chief Minister, in organising this programme, has gone a step further by going against the convention of getting a formal request from the candidate to campaign at the seat before finalising his visit.

However, sources in the other camp said Hooda had “deliberately” stayed away from campaigning in Bhiwani and has organised this last-minute programme at the fag end only as a cover-up.

The party in charge of the state, Prithviraj Chavan, who was in Bhiwani recently, had asked all MLAs playing politics with the party candidate to fall in line and campaign for her. Sources said the Chief Minister’s initiative was only fallout of this warning to the MLAs.

The Chief Minister has been exhaustively campaigning for all other candidates and was present even during the filing of nominations by most Congress candidates. However, he chose to cold-shoulder the Bhiwani-Mahenderagarh seat by remaining absent on the day of filing of nominations. Interestingly, Finance Minister Birender Singh, bitter after being denied a party ticket from Sonepat, made it to the programme.

Hooda’s absence from the Bhiwani-Mahenderagarh seat had invited repeated queries at press conferences, too, and had become a point of discussion in political circles.

While there is no love lost between the Chief Minister and Minister of State Kiran Choudhry, things came to a boil during ticket-distribution. Choudhry managed to get a ticket for her daughter, Shruti, despite stiff opposition from the camp of the power-that-be, leading to further “deepening of differences”.

Hotting up the campaign in Bhiwani-Mahenderagarh, SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav will also be canvassing for party candidate Saroj Yadav in Narnaul tomorrow, while Gujarat CM Narendra Modi will campaign for INLD candidate Ajay Chautala on May 4.

Says state to be power surplus in 2 years

Gurgaon, May 2
In politics, they say, there are no permanent friends or foes. And, as in love and war, anything is possible in politics as well.

Seeing Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda campaigning for Congress candidate for the Gurgaon Lok Sabha seat Rao Inderjeet during a joint road show here today, it was difficult for one to believe that the relations between these two stalwarts of the state politics were strained.

Hooda seemed quite at ease and upbeat when he appealed to the local leaders and masses to wholeheartedly support Rao Inderjeet, who, he said, was his close friend and their dedicated representative.

Addressing public meetings during the road show, Hooda said Haryana would be self-sufficient in electricity within a year and would become a power-surplus state in two years.

Talking to The Tribune in his special vehicle during his whistle-stop campaign tour, the Chief Minister said they were contesting the Lok Sabha elections on the plank of development, while the Opposition did not have any issue to speak of. Hooda said the Congress would sweep all Lok Sabha seats in the poll.

Rao Inderjeet said he was sure of getting people’s support on the basis of development during his tenure. Regarding his father and former Chief Minister Rao Birender Singh having sought support for INLD leader Ajay Chautala, Rao Inderjeet said his father, who was not a member of any party and had been out of active politics for long, had merely expressed his personal views.

Jhinda rallies behind Manmohan
Tribune News Service

Sirsa, May 2
Jagdish Singh Jhinda, president of the Haryana Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (HSGPC) (ad hoc) today called upon the Sikh community to “save the prestige of pagree” by voting for the candidates, who will help Manmohan Singh become the Prime Minister for the second time.

Talking to The Tribune during his first day of campaign in the Sikh dominated areas of the Sirsa seat today, Jhinda said though the HSGPC (ad hoc) had earlier given a call to the Sikhs to vote according to their conscience, he has been forced to come in support of Manmohan Singh after leaders like former chairman of the National Minority Commission Tarlochan Singh started “befooling” Sikhs on issues like the anti-Sikh riots of 1984. He said he had already campaigned in Punjab for three days and would now devote his time in Haryana till May 7.

Jhinda said the HSGPC (ad hoc) had written to President Pratibha Patil and the Prime Minister to use their influence to save Sikhs in Pakistan, who had been forced to pay Jazia by the Taliban.

While Sonia Gandhi addressed a rally in Ambala and film star Govinda organised a road show in Kurukshetra today, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to address a public meeting at Pehowa in Kurukshetra on May 4.

While BJP’s prime ministerial candidate LK Advani will address a public meeting in support of the INLD-BJP candidate in Karnal on May 5, Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi will join the campaign by addressing two rallies at Sonepat and Kaithal tomorrow.

Congress MLAs in Karnal and Panipat, who were initially sulking over the allocation of the ticket to Arvind Sharma, have now come out in his support, giving a boost to the party campaign. Local MLA Sumita Singh said the party was united.

Meanwhile, the one-hour road show of film star Govinda in Kurukshetra was a big draw as hundreds of people gathered along the roadside to have a glimpse of the star who just waved to the people and appealed to them to vote for Congress candidate Navin Jindal.

Cong worker ‘set afire’

Sirsa, May 2
An incident of alleged “setting ablaze” of a Congress worker hailing from ruling party nominee Ashok Tanwar’s native village Chimni in Jhajjar, near Chautala village in this district has vitiated the electioneering in the Sirsa parliamentary seat.

The police is taking the statement of “victim” Vijender Sangwan with a pinch of salt, though an entry has been made in the police DDR on his complaint.

While the Congress has accused the INLD of resorting to criminal activities out of frustration, INLD leader Abhey Singh Chautala has demanded an inquiry into the incident accusing the Congress of engineering the incident to malign his party.

The incident occurred on Thursday, when Ravi Chautala, a Congress leader and son of former Chief Minister Om Parkash Chautala’s estranged brother Partap Singh, brought a youth to the government hospital of Chautala village with burn injuries.

“I was going to Dabwali after campaigning in Chautala, when I noticed a car on fire on the way and a person rolling on the road in an effort to douse the fire on his body. I brought him to the hospital and informed the police,” Ravi Chautala told The Tribune.

Sangwan, who has been shifted to the PGIMS, Rohtak, told the police that a black Scorpio overtook his car when he was returning to Dabwali after campaigning in Chautala and three youths came out from the vehicle and set him and his car ablaze after pouring some liquid on him.

The attackers, Sangwan alleged, were angry over his campaign in Chautala village.

The police said the circumstantial evidence did not support Sangwan’s statement.
