New Delhi, April 29
Terrorism is a major challenge and the UPA government is trying to curb it by making strong laws, said AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi at a rally organised by the Delhi Pardesh Congress Committee here today.

She said while opposition parties had accused the Congress of doing nothing for controlling the menace of terrorism, the people knew better. They had not forgotten the major terror attacks that happened during the reign of the NDA government.

Addressing the rally at Ram Lila Ground that was full to capacity, Sonia said the UPA government had made various welfare schemes to provide people jobs, dwelling units, power etc. Lakhs of youths had been given jobs under the Jawahar National Rozgar Mission.

She appealed to the gathering to vote for Congress candidates in Delhi as they did in the assembly elections. This had happened as the government had done development works. It has changed the face of Delhi. The development of Narela and Bawana industrial areas was a prime example. The government had waived loans worth Rs 65,000 crore given to farmers. Navodaya Vidyalaya and technical institutes had been opened. Also, life insurance scheme had been launched for poor girls Sixth Pay Commission recommendations had been announced by the UPA government to benefit lakhs of government employees. The UPA government had also created a new ministry for minorities, she said.

Power is the major need for development of the country. Keeping this in mind, the UPA government had signed the nuclear deal. She claimed the Congress-led UPA government had made schemes to protect India from the economic crisis.

Without naming saffron party, she said opposition parties are dividing the people over communalism. But people understand their game plan. It will not be successful, she said.

Mukhi raises local issues; Mishra talks of unity

Tribune News Service

New Delhi, April 29
The campaigning style of candidates is gaining heat and getting sharper day by day with only a few days left for the election in the national Capital. In West Delhi, there is a strong contest between two major political parties–the BJP and the Congress. The BJP candidate is raising local issues like sewage and water problems, electricity and deficiency of streetlights in the area.

Three-time MLA and a Poorvanchali Brahmin, Mahabal Mishra, the Congress candidate is focusing on the development work required in the area. He is also listing the achievements of his party during the five years’ rule while doing his padyatra in the area.

Seeking votes from the slum dwellers in the parliamentary constituency, both the candidates have also been to the slums for vote. However, people say that the issues raised by the contenders are almost the same—backwardness of the area and the local problems.

A resident of Najafgarh, Kamlendra Jha say, “Mukhi is giving a tough fight to Mahabal in West Delhi. Mahabal too is trying his best to woo the voters, but for Mukhi the drive is a bit easy as he is a Punjabi candidate. The BSP candidate who was in the limelight a few weeks ago by declaring his assets worth Rs 650 crore is absolutely out of focus now.”

While going for his ‘padyatra’ in the scorching heat today, Mishra in spotless white clothes tried to turn some faces by raising the issue of ‘unity’. Addressing the residents of Matiala, Dwarka and Rajouri Garden, Mishra said that Congress is a party that does not seek votes on the basis of caste and religion.

“We do not raise issues that create communal violence like the other parties do. I believe in an honourable win which does not come by favouring a particular caste or religion. Our party respects all the religion and I strongly believe that Hindu, Muslim, Sikh or Christian all are one,” said Mishra, attacking the BJP for collecting votes in the name of ‘caste-based politics’.

People were seemingly interested in his speech. Standing on the roof of her house, a housewife Niki Gupta said, “I liked this issue raised by Mahabal. He is talking about caste bias which most of the politicians have shown. It is going to be tough for Mukhi.”

Continuing with his constituency tour, Mishra said, “Your one vote is decisive and do not lose the opportunity of using this right.” aThe West Delhi constituency being a Punjabi and Sikh-dominated area, Manmohan Singh will seek some votes for Mishra, by participating in a mass rally on May 3.

In support of B.L.Sharma, alias Prem Ji, the BJP candidate for the North East Delhi Lok Sabha segment, BJP’s spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad and former chief minister of Uttarakhand, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari today addressed public meetings in the area of Ghonda and Karawal Nagar.

Accusing the Congress of being insensitive to the demands of the poor, Ravi Shankar said, “The Congress has performed only meaningless jobs and destroyed the structure of the public jobs during its administrative period of last five years. It is the Congress party, which is responsible for the problem of unemployment due to which countless people and families of India are unable to earn their daily bread.”

Adding, he said that more than 1.5 crore people have become unemployed during the last five years, but Congress is ignorant about it.

Bringing the issue of Afzal Guru and Abdul Kasab, the Parliament and Mumbai bomb blast accused respectively, he alleged that the Congress is engaged in entertaining national criminals rather than punishing them.

In the series of continual public meetings, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari said, “I have come here from the holy place of Vadrinath with the good words and wishes from God and Godesses for the victory of Prem Ji.”

At 43.5° C, hottest April day in 50 years

New Delhi, April 29
Delhi today recorded the hottest April day in 50 years, with mercury touching 43.5°C, causing acute discomfort to the people in the capital. The scorching sun caused deserted roads and those out of their homes on work had to take shelter under shade.

The maximum temperature was 5°C above normal for this time of the year while the minimum was 24.4 °C, according to S.C. Bhan, director of IMD here.

“The maximum broke the record of the last 50 years for the month of April. The westerly winds blowing from Rajasthan have increased the day temperatures in northern India,” he said.

In April 1958, the mercury had touched 43.7°C, which still remains the hottest in Delhi for April.

Many Delhi roads were deserted in the afternoon as high humidity added to the discomfort factor.

Those who had to be out of their homes on work or wait for city buses could be seen taking shelter under the shades of big trees, buildings, flyovers to escape the sweltering sun. Many on the roads were seen covering their heads with damp pieces of cloth to avoid sun stroke.

But ice-cream and cold drink sellers are making a quick buck with thirsty people lining their shops to get some solace from the sweltering heat and high humidity.

“It is hot. But for me it was a better day than any other day. There were too many thirsty customers today,” said Raju, a cold drink seller in the Moti Bagh area of Delhi.

Asha Gupta, a housewife, felt like “a chicken in an oven” but she managed to beat the heat. “It was extremely hot outside. I did not step out of my house throughout the day and bathed at least three times.”

For Saurabh Asthana, a marketing executive, it seemed like everything was on fire. “It was like everything was burning outside as I drove to my office Wednesday morning. I gulped glasses of water to prevent dehydration.”

No relief is expected in the coming days as the Met Office has predicted day temperature would hover around 43 °C. The sultry heat in the capital increased the power demand that shot up to 3,500 MW on Wednesday, which the highest for the season till now, an official at Delhi power department said. — IANS
